Growing Partnerships Lead to Economic Opportunities
Developing strong partnerships has been a key strategy for RNDC as it works to increase economic opportunities in the region. This includes not only partnerships throughout the region and state but also internationally. One of these partnerships is the growing relationship with the North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), Germany, government, community, and business leaders.
Since Region Nine sent a delegation to NRW, community stakeholders have continued a dialogue with their German counterparts. This led to Guido Wallraven, Technical Director for the City of Saerbeck, visiting the region to talk with business leaders, answer their questions, and suggest next steps as they consider the transition to a clean energy economy.
Wallraven also visited St. James and since his visit, the city has created the Climate Smart Communities program and has been holding regular meetings to keep the discussion going. New Ulm and Comfrey also hosted Wallraven and leaders from all three areas recently participated in a meeting with members of the German American Chamber of Commerce (GACC) Midwest Chapter.
RNDC organized the event which brought Region Nine business and community leaders together with representatives from NRW and the GACC. This event provided an opportunity for stakeholders from both areas to start conversations about mutually beneficial partnerships. These initial conversations are vital to put Region Nine in the minds of foreign companies looking to expand into Minnesota.
The goals of the GACC are to promote economic relations between Germany and Minnesota, provide resources and integrate German companies entering the state, and assist with government regulations. Connecting cities with international companies looking to expand puts the region in a position to be competitive when trying to attract businesses.
Associate Sustainability Planner, Sabri Fair said “although they live in very different places, Germans and Minnesotans are working to solve the same issues and reach the same goals. By sharing ideas and increasing our understanding of these technologies the communities, companies, and residents who attended were empowered to act sooner and with more certainty to make sure every aspect of our region remains resilient.”
The connections created through the learning exchange with NRW, Wallraven’s visit to Region Nine, and the GACC business-to-business event, show the potential opportunities that can grow from fostering relationships. RNDC will continue to look for ways it can be Your Regional Partner for Progress.
