Solar Spotlight: Dirt Dawg Nursery, Watertown, TN
Last summer LightWave Solar installed 10kW at Dirt Dawg Nursery.
Jeff Harvey, owner of Dirt Dawg Nursery in Watertown, TN, talked to us about his business and why they decided to invest in a 10 kilowatt solar system.
Tell us a little bit about
Dirt Dawg Nursery.
JH. We have been in business for 10 years now. We specialize in container grown miniature and dwarf evergreens and rare or unusual shrubs and trees. We also carry some garden related items to make your gardening easier such as gardening gloves and ARS pruners. Recently we have started grafting and rooting some of our own cuttings. We sell at several farmers markets, and have booths at Master Gardner shows and plant society events in the area.

Why did Dirt Dawg decide to invest in solar?
JH. I have always been interested in renewable energy being involved in horticulture, and have thought about doing solar for several years now. The timing seemed to be good with the available green energy program and the tax incentives.
What would you tell other business owners who are thinking about investing in solar?
JH. The project will pay for itself in just a few years and it is worth doing. Since we had the system put in TVA already announced a rate hike.

How was your experience working with LightWave Solar?
JH. Everyone was real easy to work with. I had looked at another company two years before and they were very pushy and I had to do all the applications and follow up. It was great having LightWave help with all the paper work for the TVA and the grant. LightWave had a very professional description of the system I was going to get and projections of how much energy I would be producing as well as the cost savings I would see over the duration of the system. They were responsive to all of my concerns and questions. Everything was done as quickly as possible. When construction started the installers were very neat and efficient. It only took a week for it to be installed.

LightWave Solar commissioned Dirt Dawg's system with Middle Tennessee Electric on August 3rd.
Donald Trump and the Solar Industry by Anne Fischer

From the article, "The solar industry should be confident that a Trump administration has many reasons not to stop or slow this growing industry."

TVA Announces 2017 Solar Programs
TVA's Green Power Providers (GPP) program will continue into 2017 without changes to buyback rates or capacity:
  • GPP will open on January 11, 2017, on a first-come, first-served basis and will close on December 15, 2017.
  • Total capacity offered will be 10 MW (50/50% non-residential/residential split).
  • The renewable energy generated will be purchased at the retail rate for the entirety of the 20 year contract.
  • The system size will range from 0.5kW - 50kW.
This year's program is still open with 2.71 MW of capacity available. TVA will accept applications until December 16, 2016, if capacity remains open.  Contact us to get your project into the program!
