This month, we’re sharing information about our resources for families and educators, and how you can use these resources to increase awareness and use of evidence-based literacy instruction in your school and community.

Partnering with Virginia PTA

NCIL is partnering with Virginia PTA through our Targeted Technical Assistance Request to provide evidence-based literacy resources for PTA Family Reading Night events.

There are many ways you can turn your advocacy for early literacy into family events and activities that celebrate reading while also sharing evidence-based practices for reading instruction, intervention, and assessments.

Some ideas include:

Print and share NCIL’s educational flyers with your school community to increase family knowledge or start a conversation.
Use the Supporting Your Child’s Literacy Development Workshop Series to host a Literacy Workshop. Materials, including a facilitator's guide, a PowerPoint presentation, and a pdf with presenter notes, are available for Preschool, Elementary, and Adolescent literacy workshops.
Share an Educational Video with families.

Infographics for Educators

NCIL has many infographics that are designed specifically for schools and districts, including this brief and infographic, Succeeding in School: Essential Features of Literacy Development.

Two key literacy skills need to be developed in children. These are:

Foundational Reading skills
Academic Language

You can use this infographic to learn more about the evidence-based practices that can help develop these two skills. The infographic includes eight suggested activities to help teach these key skills. Sharing this infographic with educators at your school is a great way to increase awareness of evidence-based literacy practices during this National Reading Month, or any other time!
