Renovation & the IBC

MA is presenting at the F.I.E.R.O Station Design Symposium this September. The topic: Your Old FIre Station - Renovate or Knock it Down? The session highlights the impact the IBC has on additions and renovations to exisiting facilities.

Fire stations are listed in the IBC as essential facilities in risk category IV - the highest risk level. When adding on to or renovating an existing fire station, or a building to be converted to fire station, structural concerns emerge due to increased requirements for wind & snow loads.

Considerations include the following: All wall and roof components subject to wind & snow will have to be checked and possibly strengthened. E xisting roof girders, connections, columns and footings may have to be modified. New provisions may have to be made to resist lateral loads. These improvements can be expensive. At the conference w e'll be talking about design implications and what to watch for.

New Facility for Philadelphia's Navy Yard

MA is working on three projects for Philadelphia.

1. Under contract to Hill International we are designing a new facility for the Navy Yard that may include

land side station
marine unit
training facility

2. Working with the City and Hill, we are also designing a series of modular plug-in elements to help bring the City's existing fire stations up to currents standards. Typical elements are Decon/laundry, SCBA clean and fill, details to prevent apparatus bay contamination from entering the living space, and gender issues related to bunking and bathrooms.

3. MA is also providing firematic expertise to Shift Capital and KSS Architects in the development of a proposed design/build of a City-wide Fire Department Logistics Facility.
