Creative Alliance Milwaukee Update

October 13, 2011

Greetings!

 Shirah

The Alliance has now made a full transition of staffing.  We extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to Shirah Apple and Denise Lubotsky for their years of dedicated service which they gave with pride and purposefulness.  We wouldn't be here without their talents and wish them every success in their next venture.

In other Alliance news, strategic planning efforts continue and will be presented to the Board at the end of the month.

We're encouraged by the CAMPAC update below.

Take a look at the letter we sent to the County DeniseBoard and continue reading to see how your involvement is still needed.  Speaking of, be sure to check out the dates for the "It's Time to Talk" Tour.  This is your opportunity to share with the Wisconsin Arts Board what you want to see over the next few years.

The "Creativity Works Here" initiative continues to receive great attention, locally as well as on a national level.  The October Specialty Leasing Jones Lang LaSalle newsletter not only features this project, but encourages other centers across the nation to follow suit in figuring out creative ways to address vacancies.

Enjoy!

The Creative Alliance Team

Thanks to all who stopped by Hub Live: Celebrating Milwaukee Creatives
We had a fun time hearing all of the different ways in which YOU contribute to Milwaukee being a creative community and extend a heartfelt congratulations to ART Milwaukee on their first year anniversary.

The County Board Committee on Finance and Audit, at its meeting (October 11), voted to provide $321,035 in funding for CAMPAC in 2012 - a reduction of 15% from 2011.  The full County Board will vote on the entire 2012 county budget at its meeting on November 7, 2011.

This action was taken after the supportive testimony of CAMPAC Chair Mary Cannon and a  compelling letter from a 16 year old Latino Arts student (one of hundreds delivered through the efforts of the CAMPAC funded groups), read aloud by supervisor Peggy Romo West, during the voting process at the budget hearings.

Your efforts in attending the Finance Hearing and in sending and organizing others to send emails shows the power of communicating effectively.  You should continue to send emails:

  1. Thank you to Supervisors Johnny Thomas, Michael Mayo, Lynn DeBruin, Jim "Luigi" Schmitt, Willie Johnson, and Peggy Romo West for approving the amendment to restore 85% of the CAMPAC funding.
  2. Thank you to Supervisors Broderick, Jursik, Haas, and Harris for sponsoring the amendment.
  3. Continue to encourage all the other supervisors to support the amendment for 85% funding passed at the Finance Committee meeting on October 11th.

Thank you for stepping up and your  contributions to the sustaining of CAMPAC funding.

Arts Board Announces "It's Time to Talk" Tour

tour to eight cities around the state this fall, as part of National Arts and Humanities Month.

Given the significant changes in funding and staffing at the Wisconsin Arts Board in 2011, this opportunity to gather input from people around Wisconsin is of greater importance than ever. The input gathered at these meetings will help determine where the agency will focus efforts and resources over the next two years.

JLL Creativity Works at the Shops at Grand Avenue

Like many shopping centers across the nation, The Shops at Grand Avenue (located in downtown Milwaukee) was troubled with large square foot inline vacancy.  Spurred on by the shared success story of the Art Space concept at Crestwood Court in St. Louis, Tracy Korpela reached out to the Creative Alliance of Milwaukee to develop a similar opportunity.  The Creative Alliance of Milwaukee, already familiar working with the local creative industry, latched on to The Shops at Grand Avenue's desire to fill space.  Working together, Creativity Works Here was born.

Best described as "retail space re-invented as a thriving creative eco-system", Creativity Works Here was designed to provide low cost inline mall shop space to local creative and small business owners a place to teach, work, perform, and exhibit their work.  In order to spread the word about this concept, The Creative Alliance blasted the opportunity on their website and The Shops at Grand Avenue held an open house to show the available spaces.

Through these combined efforts and in addition to positive local media interest, Tracy and The Shops at Grand Avenue team were able to fill eleven inline spaces in three short months for a combined total of 38,613sf!  This is a combination of not only the deals that came about from direct contact through Creativity Works Here, but through word of mouth about this great opportunity.

Check out the interview with our own Tracy Korpela discussing the use of vacant spaces for Creativity Works Here on 89.7, a local Milwaukee public radio station with National affiliates:

If your property is faced with occupancy challenges, consider reaching out to your local arts community to fill the space and drive traffic.

Congratulations to The Shops at Grand Avenue!
