Faculty Bookplate Reception Held November 17, 2021
In collaboration with the Office of the Provost, Sherrod Library hosted the first Faculty Bookplate Reception to celebrate the achievements of ETSU faculty and our return to campus.
Faculty who received Tenure or Promotion in the last year had a commemorative bookplate added to the book of their choosing. Honorees were then invited to the library to see their selected book on display.
Thank you to everyone who worked to make the event possible and especially thank you to our Honorees for contributing their selections to the library’s permanent collection.

ETSU's Personal Librarian Program
Helps Students Succeed Despite Digital Divide
by Jonathan Wilson
Department of Research and Instruction
|
|
In the Fall of 2020, the ETSU Libraries, Dean of Students, Information Technology Services (ITS) and Student Life and Enrollment (SLE) began a collaboration to solve the enormous problems many of our students faced in completing course work and the very real possibility of dropping out. The University used CARES ACT funds to purchase 200 hotspots and 200 laptops to assist students most affected by the digital divide. These devices were distributed by Sherrod Library. Students who checked out a hotspot or laptop were also connected to their personal librarian (PL), Jonathan Wilson. The PL helped students with any issues that arose and guided them to library and campus resources that could benefit them.

As both a first-generation and transfer student, I personally can remember how intimidating it was to come to a new campus with thousands of students and feel overwhelmed.

Personal Librarian

The pilot program was so successful that its reach was expanded to include a personal librarian for first-generation and transfer students. Many of these students are working full-time and have children and other responsibilities in addition to classes. By providing a liaison for library resources and other ETSU services, the goal is to ease pressure on these students and improve retention. As both a first-generation and transfer student, I personally can remember how intimidating it was to come to a new campus with thousands of students and feel overwhelmed.
|
The mission of the personal librarian program is to help students adjust to the new atmosphere and environment. Though it is not always an easy task to gain their trust, weekly contact by email, YouTube videos, and a newsletter are designed to build a relationship with students. As the PL, my main job is to make sure that the students have what they need to succeed. Whether they're looking for peer-reviewed articles for a paper, need resources from Bucky's Food Pantry, or want help writing their resume, connecting with their academic advisor, or identifying the appropriate campus department to answer their questions, students know that I am available. By providing a personal librarian to guide them, the program aims to see more students successfully graduate.

New Library Website Coming Soon
by Travis Clamon
Department of Technology and Content Services
|
|
The Sherrod Library website is getting an update! We are making it easier for you and your students to find resources online with a redesigned homepage, improved navigation, and mobile-responsive design. The changes are based on user feedback and extensive usability testing.
The site-wide refresh began December 13th, but the updated homepage is available now. Take a few minutes to review the site and respond to the quick "Tell us what you think survey."
We want to ensure a smooth transition for courses that rely on library resources. Permalinks to databases, subject & course guides, and tutorials will remain the same. If you have any concerns or would like to learn more about integrating library resources in your course, feel free to contact us at libsupport@etsu.edu.

Diverse Characters Book Club Announces Spring 2022 Title
|
The Sherrod Library is proud to continue our Diverse Characters Book Club into the Spring 2022 semester.
This student-focused club was founded in Spring 2021 and met virtually over Zoom due to the ongoing pandemic. Librarians Rebecca Tolley and Evan Schmoll wanted to establish a book discussion group, which focused on narratives from diverse perspectives. They selected the 2019 novel The Other Americans by Laila Lalami as the inaugural book for the club.
In Fall 2021, Jonathan Wilson and Lydia Gwyn volunteered to host the club and selected the young adult novel Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley. Now in its third semester, the library will kick off the spring meeting of our book club on February 21st with Sing, Unburied, Sing by National Book Award Winner Jesmyn Ward.
Equal parts American road novel, ghost story, and Southern Odyssey, Sing, Unburied, Sing follows Leonie, her two children, and her friend through a Mississippi haunted with the ghosts of family, both living and dead.
Free copies of the book will be provided

A library is a place that is a repository of information and gives every citizen equal access to it. That includes health information. And mental health information. It’s a community space. It’s a place of safety, a haven from the world. It’s a place with librarians in it...
