Have you ever wondered where the money you pay in taxes as a Cheboygan City resident goes each year?

Each year, residents receive two property tax bills, a summer bill- which is generally larger- and a winter bill. These bills are based on the taxable value of the property and the money received by the City from the bills is broken down and disbursed to help fund a number of different things.

These disbursements includes for the Cheboygan Area Schools operating millage on non-homestead properties to help fund day to day goings on at the school. There are also allocations to the operations of the Cheboygan Area Public Library and the Cheboygan County Road Commission road millage.

One mill is equal to $1 per each $1,000 of taxable value on your property.

According to Cheboygan City Manager Daniel Sabolsky, one mill generates around $110,000-$115,000 from properties within City limits and the properties included in 425 agreements with other local units of government.

Three New Vehicles Join Police Department's Fleet

New Chevrolet Tahoes have recently joined the fleet of vehicles driven by officers with the Cheboygan Police Department, replacing most of the Dodge Ram pickups the Department had been utilizing.

The new vehicles were put into service beginning in August, the first one debuting at the Police Department's National Night Out event. At this event, members of the public were able to see the new vehicle, including its features. There are now three of these vehicles in the fleet, along with one Dodge Ram.

The Cheboygan Police Department is giving a friendly reminder to residents and visitors of the City, that winter parking rules are now officially in effect. These rules started Nov. 1 and will go through April 30.

No overnight parking is allowed on any City street between the hours of 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. for the purposes of snow removal. Any and all violators of this rule will be ticketed.

Grant Funding Brings Updated Equipment to City's Fire Department

Through a grant received from the Gary Sinise Foundation, the Cheboygan Fire Department was able to purchase some new gear to help the firefighters stay safer when inside a burning building.

“It was specifically for some Seek Thermal Imagers,” said Cheboygan Fire Chief Don Dailey. “They're personal thermal imagers the firefighters can clip on their coats.”Dailey said the Fire Department was able to purchase 10 of the devices with the grant funding, after they were awarded around $6,300 from the foundation.

New Holiday Decorations Featured Along Main Street

Last month the City of Cheboygan's Department of Public Works crew put up new decorations along Main Street throughout downtown, to help usher in the holiday season.

These new decorations were purchased by the Cheboygan Main Street Downtown Development Authority in July. They were purchased from Bronner's Christmas Store in Frankenmuth, because there was no local vendor who had the items available.

Mills Brings Unique Background to

Cheboygan City Council

Since July 2021, Diane Mills has been bringing a new perspective and unique background of experiences to the Cheboygan City Council, having been appointed by Council to fill a vacancy.

Mills replaced Ashley Brandt on Council until November 2022, when she was reelected to another four year term ending November 2026. During her time on Council, she has used her background which helps her think on her feet, look beyond the issue, anticipate the end result and take action to achieve the desired end state.

“I’m fair, know the difference between right and wrong, good from evil, and will always base my decisions on the whole picture,” said Mills. “I have lived in Cheboygan just three years, so do not have the history that could influence decisions. That is a good thing.”
