No Power? No Problem for Glendening's Bright Students!
A Message from Principal, Curt Brogan

Happy Spring!

I mentioned last month that we had some important testing coming up. Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade will take Ohio's AIR assessments throughout April and May. Please see the dates below to see when each grade will be tested and in what content areas.

  • 04/09/19 3rd & 5th English Language Arts (ELA) Part 1
  • 04/10/19 4th ELA Part 1
  • 04/11/19 3rd & 5th ELA Part 2
  • 04/12/19 4th ELA Part 2
  • 04/30/19 4th Math Part 1
  • 05/01/19 5th Science Part 1
  • 05/02/19 4th Math Part 2 & 5th Science Part 2
  • 05/06/19 3rd & 5th Math Part 1
  • 05/08/19 3rd & 5th Math Part 2

We know families are an important part of our team at Glendening and play a big role in the academic success of our students. There are ways you can help ensure your child shows what they know on the upcoming tests:

  1. Attendance: While attendance is always important, it is even more so on testing days as tardy students may be unable to test on their assigned day. While absences due to illness are unavoidable, we appreciate your thoughtfulness in scheduling out-of-school appointments on alternate days.
  2. Breakfast: Be sure your student gets a good breakfast to fuel their brain and help them stay focused for the duration of the test. We offer breakfast at school each morning beginning at 8:40.
  3. Rest: We all have hectic schedules outside of school, but it is important that students get a good night's sleep so that they come to school refreshed and ready to give it their best!
  4. Positive self-talk: At school, we work to help students embrace a growth mindset and a can-do attitude. Yes, the tests are demanding, but our students are well-prepared and can definitely rise to the challenge. A few encouraging words from home can help students feel more confident and sure on test days.

We have learned so much this school year and look forward to our students having the opportunity to show how much they've grown!

March Book Madness

Many of our 5th and 2nd grade students are participating in 'March Book Madness.' Each day in March, these teachers are sharing a different picture book with their class. New releases and familiar favorites will face head to head as students vote for the read-alouds they most enjoy. This is a wonderful chance for students to practice identifying story elements like character, setting, plot, and theme.

Stay tuned to see which books come out on top!

Notes from the office:

School arrival:
As the weather warms up, students will once again wait outside until it is time to enter the building. As a reminder, our doors open at 8:40 for students eating breakfast and at 8:45 for students to head to their classrooms. All students arriving after the 9:00 tardy bell must have a parent sign them in to the office. This is for safety and accurate attendance reporting.

Attendance:
You may have noticed that attendance is now reported in hours rather than days. This is due to the state's new House Bill 410. Click the link below for more information on the state's requirements.

One thing has not changed though; we still ask that you call our school office at (614) 836-4972 to report your child as absent.

Learning in the Dark
A recent power outage didn't stop the learning or fun at Glendening! Students enjoyed the change of pace the day brought including pizza for lunch, playing board games, and unplugging from technology.

Is your child fascinated with slime? Do you have fond memories of lava lamps in your youth? Are there any scientific minds your family? If so, join us Wednesday, March 20th at 6pm for Family Science Night hosted by our PTO. We're collecting canned goods for the food pantry as your cost of admission. It promises to be a fun night for the whole family!

The board of education has placed a combined levy/bond issue on the May ballot that, if passed, would result in new elementary and middle school buildings and will continue the funding for ongoing day-to-day operations.
