One Book, One Community: Saturday, January 17

Dear Eastchester Families,

We are excited to invite students in grades 3–7 and their families to join a special Cultural

Celebrations Committee program: "One Book, One Community", featuring the award-winning

novel A Duet for Home by Karina Yan Glaser. It is a powerful story about resilience, belonging,

and the importance of helping others. Our goal is to use literature to build empathy and inspire

meaningful action in our community, especially around housing and food insecurity.

One Book One Community Kickoff Event/National Day of Service

Saturday, January 17 • 2–5 PM

Eastchester Public Library

At our first meeting, families will:

● Explore the book’s themes

● Participate in a hands-on service project that connects to the story

● Copies of A Duet for Home will be available to borrow from the library or through Hoopla.

Program Highlights

Throughout the year, participants will enjoy:

● A virtual author visit and writing activity with Karina Yan Glaser (March 20th, 2026)

● Collaboration with Multicultural Club, Photography Club and the Human Rights Club

(high school mentors)

● A creative writing workshop with the Hudson Valley Writers Center (May/June)

● Community service projects supporting local organizations

National Day of Service Project

To reflect the book’s theme of kindness, we will assemble Care Bags for Lifting Up

Westchester, which serves people facing housing insecurity.

Please help by collecting items before January 17

We hope to fill 20–120 quart-size Ziplock bags.

Each bag must include:

● 2–3 snacks

● 1–2 bite-sized candies

● 1 juice box or small water bottle

● Plus any combination of:

Band-Aids • Antibiotic cream • Lip balm • Socks (L/XL, gender-neutral)

● Inspirational Notes

At the event, students will write short notes to include in each Care Bag.

This writing activity ties directly to the book’s message that small, thoughtful actions can bring

comfort and hope. We hope your family will be part of this meaningful experience of reading, reflection, and service.
