New Exhibit:
Manchester Through the Lens of Frank Kelly

The Millyard Museum's new exhibit is “Manchester Through the Lens of Frank Kelly”.

Frank Kelly was a prominent Manchester photographer in the mid-twentieth century and owned Frank Kelly Studio in Manchester for 49 years. Over his long career, he, along with his wife Eleanor, photographed many Manchester people, businesses, and landmarks. This exhibit presents highlights on his works, including some unique shots of Manchester businesses and presidential visits to the Queen City.

“Manchester Through the Lens of Frank Kelly” will run through March 31, 2023
"Help Wanted: Children of the Mills" Program
Saturday, February 11, 2023
11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

After 1850, the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company kept growing, building more factories, and hiring more people.
The mill jobs were considered good, steady work, but they were difficult jobs. What do you think it was like working here?

Join us for an exciting new children’s program, “Help Wanted: Children of the Mills”, about the youngest workers at the AMC.

The people working in these mills weren’t just grown-ups. There were boys and girls as young as 9 and 10 working in these mills, too. It was pretty common for kids to go through about 4th grade and then stop going to school to get a job in the mill. They had jobs like being a messenger, sweeping around the looms, and replacing the bobbins when they were empty.

What do you think? Would you rather work in the mills, or be in school? Find the answers to these questions and more on Saturday February 11 at 11:00. Lunch will be provided.

$12 per guest, children must be accompanied by a ticketed adult.
Target audience: school aged children.

2022-23 Annual Appeal Campaign
As we near the end of 2022, we want to say how thankful we are for all of our members and supporters.

Your support makes it possible for the MHA to operate the Millyard Museum and Research Center, provide educational programs to school groups in Manchester and beyond, continue to offer new exhibits, maintain the Association's important collection of artifacts and documents pertaining to Manchester's history, and provide needed maintenance to our historic Amherst Street building.

In this season of giving, please consider making a donation to the MHA's Heritage Fund through our Annual Appeal. Your support will make it possible for us to continue to tell Manchester's story as we collect, preserve, and share Manchester's history!

Please click here or mail your gift to the Manchester Historic Association Millyard Museum, 200 Bedford Street, Manchester, NH 03101.

2022 Manchester Holiday Ornament

The Manchester Historic Association is pleased to announce this year's holiday ornament featuring John Stark.

The ornament features a colorized depiction of the statue of General Stark that stands outside Manchester City Hall (identical statues are also in Bennington, VT and Stark, NH). The statues were sculpted by Robert Shore in 1999, based on the original 1889 design by John Rogers.

Each year the Manchester Historic Association produces an original, limited edition brass-plated ornament that celebrates Manchester's history. These unique, detailed ornaments are handcrafted in the United States by the same company that makes the annual White House Holiday Ornament. They make perfect Christmas tree decorations or gifts for the holidays and for many other occasions. Each comes in a decorative box.

These ornaments are available for $28.00 in the Millyard Museum Shop as well as at the MHA Research Center. The 2022 ornaments, as well as a limited number of ornaments from past years, can also be purchased online.

Did You Get Last Month's
Manchester Trivia Question?
Last Month's Trivia Question: What are the names of the two sites of Manchester’s largest archaeological digs and what years did they break ground?

ANSWER: The Neville site dig took place in 1968 on the east bank of the Merrimack River, just north of the Amoskeag Falls. The Smyth site dig (pictured) took place nearby in 1969 on the site of Governor Frederick Smyth's estate, the Willows, near West Salmon Street and Elm (now Brady Sullivan Tower).

This Month's Trivia Question: For many years, the Manchester Winter Carnival was a popular event for young and old alike. Originally sponsored by the Manchester Chamber of Commerce in the 1920s, it was later revived in 1958 and sponsored by the Manchester Jaycees in the 1960s and 70s. What was the name of the snowman mascot from the winter carnival events in the 60s?

The answer will appear in next month's newsletter.
