Did You Get Last Month's
Manchester Trivia Question?
|
Last Month's Trivia Question: In an effort to help the primarily Franco-American mill workers of Manchester save and borrow money, what priest organized the country’s first credit union in 1908: “La Caisse Populaire, Ste-Marie” or St. Mary’s Bank?
ANSWER: Monsignor Pierre Hevey
Hevey, who was the honorary president of the credit union, made the first deposit of $125. St. Mary’s became the first credit union in the United States.
As pastor of St. Marie’s Church, Msgr. Hevey felt his parishioners should have their own credit union because mill workers often had trouble getting credit due to language and cultural barriers.
