Last Month's Trivia Question:
Who was the first Black female landowner in Manchester?
ANSWER: Samantha Plantin
Samantha Plantin was born to freed slaves in New Boston, New Hampshire, c. 1827. She first appears in Manchester records in the city directory in 1844 at 18 years old living in the Stark Corporation. Samantha worked as a washerwoman and later learned the trade of dressmaking. In August 1870 she purchased her first piece of property from the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company on Ash Street for $400. Ten months later, Samantha sold this property for $1,200. In May of 1889, she was able to purchase property on Concord Street in Manchester, where she built a home that still stands today. A historical marker in recognition of Samantha was recently erected on Elm Street.
