Women's History Month

We don't have to look far to find ordinary women doing extraordinary things. Each week this month we will highlight a Nation ancestor or elder and an Alkeublan alumna as we visualize the past, present, and future women of BCN. HERstory is OUR story.

Mother Motisola

Martha Bell McShan Perry

Mother Motisola (Martha Bell McShan Perry) was a long-standing member of Shrine #10 in Houston. Her joy in the service to her church community was infectious. She along with her daughter Nyasha were renowned preparers of Pato and Sunday coffee hour. When Mother Motisola joined the Shrine in the late 1970s, she was already the grandmother to two children who were also members, so it was truly a family affair. She served as a cafeteria manager in the Houston Independent School District for more than twenty years and dedicated her life to her family and friends. As a member of the Shrine, she was blessed with the title of Mother after many years of faithful Christian service and became known to many as Mother Motisola, which means one of great understanding. She served for many years as chef extraordinaire to her church family and was a faithful member of the usher board. Mother Motisola joined the realm of the ancestors in 2005, she was a good and faithful servant.

Niara Dorsey, an Alkebulan Alumna is the great-granddaughter of Mother Motisola. She is a talented graphic artist and musician. She is one of the designers of last year's holiday greeting card and the designer of the 2024 Synod logo. Niara can be found each Sunday playing with the Shrine #10 music ministry. She is currently pursuing a Bachelors degree in Fine Art at the University of Houston. Niara is a draftee in the Holy Order of the Maccabees. Much like her three generations of mothers, Niara also enjoys the culinary arts.

RE-IMAGINING BCN

As we initiate a formal process for re-imagining BCN, it must begin with a well-developed succession plan that can effectively support the institutional framework and broad scope of our organization. It must include a method to regularly assess our operations, program, and mission as they intersect with our core values, theology, theory, and practices. Let YOUR voice be heard by participating in a brief questionnaire to share YOUR vision of BCN re-imagined.
