Remembering the One who comes in the middle of the night
(Luke 12:38, with thanks for the evening prayer of Augustine of Hippo)
Keep watch, dear God,
with those who work through the night,
in hospitals, on roads, from control towers,
those who wake in the night
over infants or elders,
and those who weep in the night,
for personal sorrows, worries of the world,
and the decisions of its leaders.
Give your angels care over
all deep sleepers and the restless ones.
Tend the sick, Christ, bend near
in ways of healing others may never know.
Give rest to the weary, bless the dying,
soothe the suffering, hold tight the afflicted,
support the responsible, shield the joyous;
and all for your love’s sake. Amen.
