The Abortion Conundrum

Returning the abortion question to the states is a constitutional victory. It is the beginning of restoring the separation of powers that is vital to the country. Even the late justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg noted that the manner in which Roe was determined was a judicial error. The major legal sticking point has always been that the Court is not supposed to make law, only interpret it. That has now been remedied.

But the devil is always in the details and the following issues will need to be seriously addressed for there to be a modicum of peace in the land.

If a state prohibits abortions altogether, will a licensed doctor go to jail if s(he) performs an abortion?
Will there be an exodus of Ob/Gyn doctors from a state that bans abortion thus leaving pregnant women without proper medical care?
Will women who obtain an abortion in a non-abortion state be jailed?

Media mad that Facebook, Instagram are now censoring things they like

The idea that social media should be moderated to conform to community standards is now coming back to bite activists, as seen in a new piece from Ars Technica.

The piece laments that Facebook and Instagram posts detailing how abortion pills will be sent interstate are now being removed. Offers to do so for those seeking them cannot be made on those platforms.

This is not some aberration. Rather, it’s the inevitable outcome of the last few years of insistence that none of those outlets should be carrying posts activists find objectionable.....

U.S. and Canada Tell G7 That Climate Change Policy is More Important Than Feeding People

Say what you will about Boris Johnson, but he does proffer pragmatic solutions to problems.

With a pending global food shortage only looking worse by the day British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has proposed to use biofuel farmland to grow food that can be consumed by people.

German Chancellor Olaf Schulz is also supporting the plan.

However, Joe Biden and Justin Trudeau have denounced the effort to expand food production in the U.S. and Canada and blocked the framework from G7 policy.

Hutchinson’s Hearsay Testimony Disputed

The explosive testimony of Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to then-Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, that President Donald Trump tried to grab the steering wheel of his presidential limousine on January 6, 2021 and assaulted a Secret Service agent when agents refused to take him to the Capitol building during the riot is being disputed by some of those very agents.

First of all, Hutchinson was not in the vehicle when the alleged incident took place, and she testified to the hand-picked (by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi) committee only as to what she claims she was told. In other words, her testimony is what is referred to as “hearsay” evidence, which is only rarely admitted in a court of law. Some of those who were actually in the vehicle during the alleged incident have said they were not asked by the committee to testify, but they would be willing to do so now.

In November 2005, during morning rounds in the cardiac intensive care unit at the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv, one of the authors, Jay Lavee, was stunned to have the following exchange with a patient suffering advanced heart failure:

“Doc, I’m fed up waiting here for nearly a year now while you guys find a heart donor. My insurance company told me to fly to China—they’ve already scheduled a heart transplant in two weeks.”

Ironically, one of the wokest American corporations is also selling out Americans to none other than the Chinese Communist Party. BlackRock and its CEO Larry Fink have been using the massive amount of investment funds at its disposal to praise and advocate for the interests of Beijing for several years now.

BlackRock, which regularly pressures American companies to invest more in “climate change” priorities or promote “racial equity,” has a history of cozying up to America’s most powerful adversary on the global stage.

Just last week, the Biden State Department tapped former BlackRock chairman Tom Donilon for the administration’s Foreign Affairs Policy Board which will, among other things, manage the U.S.’s “strategic competition” with China. While Donilon was chairman of the company, BlackRock massively increased their investment levels in Chinese companies.

There’s Nothing Radical or Political about the Supreme Court’s Big Rulings

If you get your legal news from social media, with occasional links to reporting by actual media outlets, you’d think the Supreme Court has made an extreme turn to the Right in the law. In this reading, rulings on cases involving school funding, prayer at schools, guns, and, of course, abortion , represent an ideological hijacking of our Constitution. What’s more, since the six justices in the majority of each of these cases were appointed by Republican presidents, these radical decisions were all just partisanship disguised as law. Or so the argument goes.

That take, which one unfortunately sees not just from Twitter trolls and Facebook lawyers but from highly regarded law professors and journalists in all the top print and broadcast media, is disingenuous at best. To use the technical legal term, it’s hogwash.

I don’t mean that reasonable people, legally trained or otherwise, can’t disagree on these cases, or that anyone who contradicts my analysis is stupid or politically motivated. To the contrary, it’s those attacking the Supreme Court’s legitimacy and calling the justices partisan hacks who seem to believe that the only way to reach the results we’ve seen is to act in bad faith for political reasons.

Independence Day and Our Legacy of Liberty

“About the Declaration there is a finality that is exceedingly restful.”

As we approach the 246th anniversary of the Founding of American Liberty, I am grateful for the critical decisions by our Supreme Court affirming not only the sanctity of life but also the fundamental First Amendment and Second Amendment rights of all Americans.

Indeed, the first shots of the American Revolution fired at the battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19th, 1775, were to repulse the confiscation of militia firearms — in other words, to disarm the people.

Fifteen months after those opening salvos, the first generation of American Patriots gathered in Philadelphia to sign our Declaration of Independence, the most consequential enumeration of the fundamental and unalienable Rights of Mankind as irrevocably endowed by our Creator.

The enduring premise of our Declaration is found in these words: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”

Those words terrify the tyrants at the helm of the socialist Democrat Party.

Our Founders concluded their affirmation of the Declaration by attaching their signatures under these words: “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” In doing so, the signers were signing their own death warrants.....

We can break the computer algorithms destroying critical thinking

In the past twenty years and, with accelerating speed in the past ten years, computer algorithms determine what information Americans receive and even dictate how they should respond to that information. There is an ancient method of analyzing information that allows people to see and understand all sides of an issue. It’s practiced in Yeshivas (traditional Jewish education schools that focus on Biblical and religious texts) but can be applied anywhere. American cultural and political discourse would improve greatly if it were added to American education.

I recommend a Netflix special production, The Social Dilemma, to everyone I meet—friends, relatives, shopkeepers, and even strangers. Although understated in tone, the movie is hard-hitting as it exposes the business model companies such as Facebook, Google, Twitter, and Instagram use to affect our thinking. The documentary’s conclusion is that computer algorithms have learned—on their own—how to reward humans to increase the amount of attention they pay to their devices. Then, the information technology companies sell the accumulated increased attention to advertisers in an auction-like process. Each person’s attention-increase is worth a few cents. These cents add up, making these giants the richest companies that have ever existed.

I used to be pro-choice

I used to be pro-choice simply because everybody else was. When I was in 11th grade during the '77-'78 school year, we had two representatives from Planned Parenthood take over our biology class for a week. With pretended neutrality and repeated "I neither condemn nor condone..." the message was clear: if you're a normal teenager, you'll be sexually active and here are all the contraceptives that are available, and there's always abortion if they fail.

I used to unthinkingly swallow the usual arguments for abortion which some may be surprised to learn go back several decades. What if the child is handicapped? What if the parents are poor? What if the mother is single and struggling to make ends meet? What about rape? Do you want to force women to have back alley abortions? These and others all go back at least to the '70s.

But then something unexpected happened. I worked at a summer camp as a counselor for six summers which were some of the best summers of my life. Two of those summers were spent working in the camp for the mentally handicapped. This included a fair number of Down Syndrome people, some in their 30s. I got to know them, their sense of humor which was often riotous, and in some cases their utterly profound faith in God which to this day challenges me. In some cases I saw such a willingness to honor God in these simple minded people such as one man helping a blind camper find his way to the restroom and saying,....
