Today Marks 80 Years Since Congress Last
Bothered To Declare a War
Presidents once treated congressional authorization as a requirement for the U.S. to enter conflicts. What went wrong?
Congress issued its last official declaration of war 80 years ago today, marking the last time the president deferred to the war-making process outlined by Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution before entering a conflict. Since 1942, when it authorized the use of military force against Hungary, Bulgaria, and Rumania in World War II, Congress has abdicated its proper role in American war making. Blank-check authorizations now shield the president from domestic accountability for his use of military force.
The Constitution gives Congress the sole authority to declare war. Since the presidency of George Washington, it's invoked that power 11 times to fight nations in five distinct conflicts—the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II. In each case, the president had to first request congressional authorization either in writing or in person. He would explain his justification for why the U.S. should enter the conflict at hand. Congress would then put it to a vote—majority support was required, but most declarations were passed unanimously or near-unanimously—and pass a declaration of war in the form of a bill or joint resolution.
The Founding Fathers were rightly skeptical of an executive with an unbridled capacity to wage war. "Nations in general will make war whenever they have a prospect of getting anything by it," John Jay wrote in Federalist No. 4. "Absolute monarchs will often make war when their nations are to get nothing by it, but for purposes and objects merely personal, such as thirst for military glory, revenge for personal affronts, ambition, or private compacts to aggrandize or support their particular families or partisans." Such factors could motivate the executive "to engage in wars not sanctified by justice or the voice and interests of his people."....

Biden tucked $500million bid to build more electric vehicles into the Ukraine aid bill
Both Biden and Ukrainian leaders had said that the $40 billion emergency aid package was essential for Ukraine's war against Russia. But tucked into that package was not only military aid but half a billion dollars to be allocated under the Defense Production Act to companies obtaining critical battery minerals like nickel, cobalt, lithium and graphite, Bloomberg first noted.
That's in addition to the $750 million the Defense Department (DOD) was authorized to dole out to mining companies in March when Biden first invoked the Defense Production Act for critical minerals. ....

Red Flag Gun Laws Set The Stage For Selective Disarmament Of Conservatives
Red Flag laws, also known as “Extreme Protection Orders,” are generally associated with assumptions of mental health and instability (remember the word “assumptions”). Inflation Will Price Many Americans Out Of Housing And Into Homelessness
It might seem counterintuitive; one would assume that as sales fall so should prices, but this is the upside-down world of inflation. Certain commodities and products, usually necessities, almost always skyrocket in price, ultimately driving most American families out of the market completely.
One of the only exceptions to this rule is when the government institutes rent or price controls. In Weimar Germany, for example, the government enforced strict regulatory controls on landlords, fixing rent at a rate that made profits impossible.

U.S. Voting Machines Vulnerable After All
In an advisory publicly released on Friday, the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency (CISA) identified nine flaws in Dominion Voting Systems software. Dubbed the Democracy Suite ImageCast X, it is an interactive technology that allows voters to mark their ballots electronically.
The advisory says that Dominion machines are susceptible to manipulation by those with physical access to the voting devices or access to the Election Management System (EMS). The latter is software called Democracy Suite, which the company says powers “all Dominion products.”
CISA’s advisory also warns that Dominion technology is open to hackers who could modify files even “before they are uploaded to ImageCast X devices.”....

June 6 marks 78 years since D-Day landings in France to defeat Nazi Germany
One of the most important operations in World War II took place on June 6, 1944 One day prior, General Dwight Eisenhower approved ‘Operation Overlord’ an ambitions strategy in Normandy, France that would be the largest seaborne invasion in history.
Shortly after midnight on this day in 1944, the first part of the operation was put into action in the air. Numerous American and British bombers attacked targets along the coast. In addition to that, thousands of allied paratroopers dropped into the surrounding area while other allied forces used gliders to secure key structures like bridges.
In the water, minesweepers cleared the area in preparation for the landing. Then at 6:30 a.m. the first Higgins boats would hit Normandy’s shores, which were divided into five sectors: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword Beach.....

The Structural Legal Rot Runs Deep
With the likelihood of a Republican tsunami at the midterms, some are already spinning wish lists of structural changes they hope will begin to take shape. Without wishing to rain on their -- or your -- parade, I’d like to point out how deep by now the structural rot goes. It’s beyond the collapse of academia and K-12 education, the evisceration of our military, government waste, the dysfunction of our health system, and the one-sidedness of media coverage. It goes to the very heart of our legal system.
This week Peter Navarro was charged by a D.C. grand jury for contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with the House Select Committee, a purely partisan confection of Nancy Pelosi in violation of all the traditional House rules, and a clear propaganda operation. (Mark Meadows and Dan Scavino, Jr. cooperated to some extent and were spared. The committee also referred them for prosecution, but the Department of Justice declined to prosecute them.)
Instead of following the normal procedure in such cases of notifying the person charged and allowing them to report for processing, the FBI affected to humiliate him, arrested him as he was boarding a plane, publicly handcuffing him and placing him in leg irons.....

The Unspoken Wisdom of the Second Amendment
The Second Amendment is again being scrutinized as the recurrent gun control/gun rights debate heats up. Gun control advocates emphasize the words "well-regulated militia," and gun rights–supporters highlight "shall not be infringed." The significant meaning and philosophical foundation of the amendment, however, is found in a phrase that gets relatively little attention: "necessary to the security of a free State."
A free state implies necessary restraints on the armed agencies of government that are vested with the authority to use force. These restraints lessen the risk that such entities will become agents of tyranny, but they also impede their ability to defend the lives and safety of individual citizens. Unless the people are willing to accommodate an oppressive and intrusive police presence in the interest of "public safety," the citizens of a free state (i.e., one in which government force is restrained in the interest of individual liberties) must be allowed the right and means to provide their own defense. The idea of a free state is incompatible with the degree of surveillance, control, and intrusiveness necessary for police agencies to provide the elusive and illusory security that forms the basis of gun control appeals. Onerous restrictions on the ability of citizens to defend themselves against violence and criminal threats are hallmarks of authoritarianism, and authoritarianism is incompatible with a free State.

Lysander Spooner’s Strategy to Stop Unconstitutional Acts
Resist.
That was Lysander Spooner’s strategy to stop unconstitutional acts that was very much in line with James Madison and other prominent founders.
Spooner was a prominent 19th-century slavery abolitionist. He is well-known in libertarian and anarchist circles for saying the Constitution either authorized the government we got or it was powerless to stop it. “In either case, it is unfit to exist.”
But many don’t know that Spooner also wrote quite a bit about the legal meaning of the Constitution – and strategy to defend and advance liberty.
In response to the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, Spooner penned a pamphlet titled “A Defence for Fugitive Slaves.”
The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 ranks as one of the most insidious laws in American history. It denied a black person accused of escaping slavery any semblance of due process. A white man could basically drag a black person south into slavery merely on the power of his word. This even put people born free in the North under the constant threat of being snatched up and sent to slavery.
The first part of Spooner’s pamphlet builds a strong seven-point case against the constitutionality of the Fugitive Slave Act.....

Lessons from the Quartering Acts of 1765 and 1774
Most people are familiar with the Boston Tea Party, but not a lot of people know about the aftermath, and how that experience helped shape the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Although British attempts to confiscate arms and munitions directly triggered the initial battles in the War of Independence, there were numerous acts committed over the years leading up to it that convinced American colonists that separation from the motherland was necessary.
Among these were four laws passed by the British Parliament in response to the Boston Tea Party, including the Quartering Act, passed on June 2, 1774.
Quartering refers to the billeting (housing) of soldiers in areas where they are stationed. Unlike today’s military, there were no permanent bases in the Colonies to speak of. There may have been local barracks or forts, but they were generally inadequate to house all of the troops in a given location.
George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate notes:
“The inability to effectively house troops in North America had been a long-standing issue. Troops were often billeted far from the areas in which they operated, making it difficult for the army to exercise effective control over the colonists.”

Respect the Fed? No, End the Fed
President Joe Biden has unveiled a three-part plan to fight inflation — or at least make people think he is fighting inflation. One part of the plan involves having government agencies “fix” the supply chain problems that have led to shortages of numerous products. Of course, any attempt by the government to solve the supply chain problems (which were caused by prior government interventions such as shutting down the economy for over a year) will not just fail to solve the supply shortages but will create new problems.
Deficit reduction is another part of Biden’s anti-inflation plan. However, Biden is not proposing cutting welfare or warfare spending. Instead, his deficit reduction plan consists of “tax reforms to increase revenue,” which is DC-speak for tax increases. History shows that tax increases unaccompanied by spending cuts end up increasing the deficit.....

Laughter, the Bane of Tyrants
The Babylon Bee isn’t one of my regularly visited websites, but I landed on its front page the other morning and started scrolling through headlines. Pretty soon a snicker escaped my lips, then a giggle, and then several bursts of downright hearty laughter, which a co-worker was soon sharing after I read him a choice headline.
I went back to my work feeling refreshed and content. It felt good to laugh, to look at the troubles our world faces through the funny side of the lens for once.
That I would find such laughter from a conservative satire site like The Babylon Bee would likely come as a surprise to many of our ruling elites. For the last couple of decades, popular opinion has placed good political humor solely in the hands of those on the left side of the political spectrum, professors Matt Sienkiewicz and Nick Marx told Politico in a recent interview. ....

REPORT: Teachers Explain How They Push ‘Gender Lessons’ On Young Children
Teachers discussed the various ways they are injecting gender-related discussions into their lessons, including comments about using hormones to stop menstrual periods and declining to state that sexual anatomy is gender-specific, according to The Washington Post. One transgender teacher makes a point of telling students about the process of gender transitions, including with personal testimony.
“LGBTQ identities are a naturally occurring facet of human variation, and that is why we need to learn about them in the context of biology and human anatomy,” Sam Long, a biology teacher at Denver South High School, told The Washington Post. Long, who is transgender, frequently discusses gender ideology with students, teaches that gender is a spectrum rather than a binary, and shares his own sex change experience.....

Spinning School Tragedies
Could it be that progressives are exaggerating the prevalence of school shootings? Might the radical left be spinning the actual occurrences to further their goal of eventual firearms confiscation?
Freelance writer Dana D. Kelley, in a June 3 column for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, makes a case that statistics broadcast by major media are intentionally misleading. Of course, each of the victims is a tragedy, particularly for parents, relatives, and friends. But if we are to craft public policy from these events, we should deal with factual data.
How many have died in K-12 shootings in the past 40 years? Several thousand? Hundreds? The answer is 98 victims, including Uvalde.
Naysayers might suspect this information comes from conservative media or right-wing activists. ....

High School Students Value Free Speech but Feel Uncomfortable Speaking Up
Ideally, American public schools are settings where young Americans develop into citizens and become socialized to particular ideas, values, and civic norms. Attitudes toward democracy and disagreement.
In this context, the findings of the Knight Foundation’s just-released report on high schoolers’ attitudes toward free speech should worry us. The report, part of the Knight Foundation’s Future of the First Amendment project, finds that high school students censor themselves at levels currently seen on collegiate campuses.
There is some good news in the Knight report, however. The data powerfully illustrate that Gen Z high school students today are open to free speech and do not support cancel culture or the rampant censorship that threatens learning and viewpoint diversity.

TORONTO—An embarrassing crime wave has taken Toronto by storm as criminals, emboldened by Canada's ban on handguns, have begun holding up businesses armed with nothing but finger guns. Tim Hortons, a popular Canadian cafe, is reportedly among the hardest hit.
Authorities confirm that the cashiers of Tim Hortons are routinely held at finger-point and forced to empty hundreds of dollars into cartoonish money bags. By the time police arrive on the scene the robbers are long gone.
"It's absolutely terrible," said Constable Evans. "Since these thieves are using finger guns there's no chance of them leaving additional evidence at the scene. No dropped weapons. No serial numbers are visible on security cameras. Nothing!"
The mayor of Toronto is advising citizens not to attempt defensive finger guns. "Don't stoop to their level," said Mayor Tory in a public address. "We don't want to make matters worse, eh?"

Archaeologists Uncover Companies' Rainbow Logos From Sodom And Gomorrah
ISRAEL—Archeologists excavating in the Jordan Rift Valley have uncovered what they believe are the rainbow logos used by companies to promote Pride Month in the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. My spoon killed another 2 gallons of ice cream last night; it’s time for common sense spoon control
This morning, I was devastated to find out that my spoon ate another 2 gallons of ice cream last night. I am shaking at the horror. Who knows how many gallons my spoon may kill tonight.
I don’t know who needs to hear this but it’s time for common sense spoon control now!
A recent study by Pew Pew Center said that spoons kill more than 1 million gallons of ice cream every year in this country and that leads to people being overweight and dying prematurely from heart disease and diabetes.
But it’s clearly not my fault my spoon shoveled bite after bite into my fat face. It was the spoon’s fault. I wouldn’t have been able to get the delicious Unicorn Bliss Sundae Serendipity Ice Cream without the spoon. My three PhDs were in social sciences but this is simple physics people!
Therefore, I am petitioning Congress to ban assault spoons immediately. We can talk about banning tea spoons and measuring spoons later....
