Cleburne plans
press conference to announce a public/private partnership for major retail, entertainment development

CLEBURNE, TX. - The City of Cleburne is making plans to create what could be the city's largest retail economic development program in the last 10 years.

Mayor Scott Cain and potential partners will hold a community meeting and press conference on Thursday, August 6 in the Cleburne Conference Center at 12 noon to formally announce Cleburne Station. The multi-million dollar development will include retail shopping opportunities, hotels and a mixed-use facility that can be used for baseball and live concerts.

A number of private partners in the project will join Cain for the announcement and multi-media presentation that will start at 12:30. including Dallas Mavericks General Manager and Matthews Southwest partner Donnie Nelson.

Cleburne Station's proposed location is at the intersection of U.S. 67 and Chisholm Trail Parkway - the prime entry point from the Chisholm Trail Parkway.

"We've been listening to Cleburne's residents. Among other things, they told us that they would like new places to shop and more entertainment opportunities," Cain said. "This project will provide that."

The mayor, working with Interim City Manager Dan O'Leary, is the driving force behind the planning and negotiations for Cleburne Station. He is creating a public/private partnership program to get development underway.

In conjunction with the development's goals of bringing new business opportunities and creating jobs for Cleburne residents, the project includes the establishment of a minor league baseball team to play in the new ballpark at Cleburne Station.

"It's an honor to work with Mayor Cain and the city of Cleburne to develop a state-of-the-art retail development and baseball facility and bring the Railroaders back home after a century long hiatus," Nelson said.

City voters will go to the polls in November to decide whether the city will develop a Type A Corporation. With voter approval, the city will assess a half-cent sales tax increase to pay for the city's part of the project.

When complete, studies estimate Cleburne Station will prove about 1,000 permanent jobs for Cleburne. Cain will provide more economic data at the Aug. 6 announcement.

"This public/private partnership will create a $100 million catalyst for economic growth," Cain said. "And the best part is the voters get to decide whether or not to do it."

"This is a kick start into our future," he added. "It is our firm belief that once we get development going, it will continue. And that will help make our great city even better."
