Eating High-Fat, High-Sugar Foods Can Change Our Brains to Prefer Sweets

Consuming a Western diet high in sugar and fat poses many health risks. But often, these foods are easier to crave and consume. A recent study published in Cell Metabolism examined how eating high-fat and high-sugar foods alters the brain’s reward centers. Researchers found that participants who consumed high-fat and sugar yogurt had less of a desire for low-fat foods and had an increased brain response to high-fat and sugar foods. The results suggest the importance of food choices in maintaining a healthy body weight.

An Older Person's Sense of Smell Can Predict Health Issues

Problems with a sense of smell may predict a higher risk for age-related health problems, according to researchers from the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Researchers assessed olfactory sensitivity and olfactory identification, terms that denote the ability to detect an odor and the ability to detect and name an odor, respectively. They found that impaired olfactory identification and sensitivity functions are associated with frailty, which is interesting because it shows that it’s not just the aging brain at work here. It may also be something peripheral, such as something involving the nose, that makes it possible to predict impending frailty and death.

Yoga May Improve Markers of Frailty in Older Adults

For older adults, yoga seems beneficial for markers of frailty compared with education or inactive control, according to a systematic review published online March 13 in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Julia Loewenthal, MD, from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and colleagues examined the evidence on the effect of yoga-based interventions on frailty in older adults using data from randomized controlled trials conducted among adults aged 65 years or older. The yoga styles were mainly based on Hatha yoga, and most included Iyengar or chair-based methods. They concluded that “Yoga may affect certain frailty markers that are associated with clinically meaningful outcomes in older adult populations, most notably gait speed and lower-extremity strength and endurance,” the authors write. “However, yoga may not offer benefit over active interventions like exercise or tai chi.”

One in Five Nurses Could Leave the Workforce by 2027

Experts projected that roughly 800,000 registered nurses (RNs) intend to leave the workforce by 2027 -- on top of the more than 100,000 who left during the COVID-19 pandemic -- during a presentation ahead of a solution-oriented panel discussion at the National Press Club last week. In other words, close to one-fifth of the 4.5 million RNs in the country intend to leave the workforce, which would likely have ripple effects on the entire healthcare system, said Brendan Martin, PhD, director of nursing regulation for the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), the host of the recent panel. Following Martin's presentation, Maryann Alexander, PhD, RN, chief officer of nursing regulation for NCSBN, led a panel discussion on the workforce crisis, and noted that these projections are "reversible." Gay Landstrom, PhD, RN, senior vice president and chief nursing officer at Trinity Health System, stressed the importance of creating a "different working environment" for nurses -- one that is "safer," "more flexible," and "more supportive."

New Hormone-Based Therapies Poised to Expand Obesity Treatment Options

Multiple new anti-obesity medications currently in the pipeline could expand treatment options for the disease in the coming years, according to a speaker at ObesityWeek 2022. Ania M. Jastreboff, MD, PhD, described the FDA’s approval of semaglutide 2.4 mg (Wegovy, Novo Nordisk) in June 2021 - based on the large, sustained weight reduction seen in clinical trials - as an important milestone for obesity treatment. Semaglutide is just the start, however, according to Jastreboff. A slew of new agents, most of which are nutrient-stimulated hormone-based therapies, are currently in development and could greatly expand the number of options available for obesity treatment in the near future, she said, but clinicians must look beyond just reducing weight. She believes the quality of weight reduction must also be a focus moving forward, with a greater emphasis on preserving and increasing lean mass. “Above all, she said, access and affordability to anti-obesity medications must be a priority.”

Narcan

Life-Saving Overdose Drug Narcan Approved by FDA for Over-the-Counter and Online Sale

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the lifesaving drug Narcan for over-the-counter use without a prescription for the first time. The nasal spray containing 4 milligrams of naloxone hydrochloride can rapidly reverse the effects of opioid overdose and is the standard treatment in such emergencies. The FDA action paves the way for the life-saving doses to be sold directly to consumers in places like drug stores, convenience stores, grocery stores and gas stations, as well as online. The timeline for availability and price will be determined by the American manufacturer, Emergent BioSolutions, but the FDA says the transition from prescription to OTC status, “may take months”. Other formulations and dosages of naloxone will remain available by prescription only.

Second Omicron Booster Authorized

Certain groups are now eligible for another dose of the bivalent COVID-19 vaccine, and the updated shots have now fully replaced the monovalent shots, the FDA announced recently. The agency scrapped the emergency use authorizations (EUAs) for the monovalent Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA vaccines, and has authorized the bivalent boosters (original plus Omicron BA.4/BA.5 strains) for all doses starting at age 6 months. People aged 65 and up can now get a second bivalent dose at least 4 months after their initial bivalent dose. FDA said the second dose is supported by data showing that immunity wanes in this population over time, but that an additional dose restores it.

Potential Health Benefits of Art Therapy

Creating visual art in a therapeutic setting may help relieve stress and boost self-image, among other possible perks, though more research is needed. The creation of art has been a healing technique for millennia, evidence of which can be found in many cultures and traditions all over the world. But only recently, in the 1940s, did art and healthcare combine in a formal therapeutic setting to become known as art therapy, per the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB). Today, under the guidance of a licensed, board-certified practitioner, creating various forms of visual art, from sculpture to painting and even scribbling, may provide powerful healing benefits for some folks. While more scientific studies are needed to better understand how art therapy may impact mental and physical health, per a recent review, there’s growing interest in its possible efficacy for a broad spectrum of health conditions.

US Electricity from Renewables Surpasses Coal and Nuclear for First Time

According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), electricity generation from renewable sources surpassed coal and nuclear in the U.S. for the first time last year. The increase in renewables was driven primarily by solar and wind, which made up 14 percent of the country’s electricity in 2022, reported The Associated Press. Six percent of electricity produced domestically came from hydropower, while geothermal and biomass sources made up less than one percent.

NOAH Hosts a Three-part Webinar Series on Advocacy

logo image

The Nursing Organization Alliance (NOA) has recognized the importance of advocacy and the role our member organizations and their individual members make to bring great change to the nursing community. Have you found yourself asking these questions:

  • Where do I start?
  • What is my civic duty as a nurse?
  • Who is my state representative/ how do I find out who this is?
  • With my position/role at my organization, whose opinions do I promote?
  • What is the difference between advocacy and lobbying?
  • I'm just one person, can I make a difference?

AHNA is a long-standing member of NOA. Membership in NOA is open to any nursing organization whose focus is to address current and emerging nursing and health care issues.

Planetary Health Task Force

As one of your AHNA Planetary Health Task Force Nurses I will share information about our task force. I will also share my journey learning about Planetary Health and creating positive changes for our planet in a hospital setting.

I celebrated Earth Week at my hospital by offering a simple survey on how we can reduce hospital waste and support our planet. It was a great opportunity to visit units to share the benefits of caring for our planet as nurses and health care workers. It is vital that we continue to spread the news that there are many things we can do to be proactive to support our planet and make it Earth Day Every Day.

One of our greatest resources is the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE). AHNE is the only national nursing organization focused solely on the intersection of health and the environment. Their mission is promoting healthy people and healthy environments by educating and leading the nursing profession, advancing research, incorporating evidence-based practice, and influencing policy. AHNE vision is a transformational alliance preparing and engaging nurses to assure the environmental health of all people, overcome environmental health disparities, and to heal our communities and the earth for present and future generations.

Congratulations! Lauren Lodico Elected 2023-2024 President of the National Student Nurses’ Association

Lauren has identified holistic nursing as her platform for running for NSNA President.

Lauren Lodico

The National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA) is pleased to introduce Lauren Lodico as the 2023-2024 NSNA President. The election results were announced on April 15, 2023, during the NSNA 71st Annual Convention in Nashville, TN. Ms. Lodico is a student nurse at Molloy University in Rockville Centre, NY.

Ms. Lodico is also the 2023-2024 President of the Nursing Students Association of New York State (NSANYS). Prior to her election, she also served as the 2022-2023 Treasurer and 2021-2022 MidHudson Regional Director of NSANYS. In addition, she was the Co-Vice President (2022-2023) and Co-Communications Director (2021-2022) of Molloy Nursing Student Association. Ms. Lodico is a recipient of the Nurses Association of the Counties of Long Island Scholarship. She is a member of the NSNA Leadership University Honor Society and Omega Delta Xi Rho Honors Society.

“I am so immensely honored and excited to be the 2023-2024 NSNA President. I feel that my leadership experience for the past three years in nursing school and in my university prepared me for this role,” Ms. Lodico said. “I look forward to addressing all the concerns nursing students across the country brought to my attention at this past convention. I want to help bridge the gap between NSNA and nursing school so that we are doing everything possible to enhance the educational experience for all our constituents. I hope to inspire all nursing students to take the leap and become inspired to get involved in leadership opportunities.”

Dr. Diane Mancino, NSNA Executive Director, noted that Ms. Lodico brings a wealth of leadership experience to her position as president of the NSNA. “She is well organized and poised to advance the mission of NSNA and advocate for nursing students. A strong and effective communicator, I know that Ms. Lodico will make a positive difference in the quality of life for her patients as a future nurse leader.”
