We have a lot of news to share this month! We have hosted events, members of our faculty have been published and cited in the media, and our students have been honing their leadership skills.
 
I encourage you to consider attending our session on the Future of Work and the Workplace on March 29. The event is sponsored by the Willumstad School’s Elizabeth and Allen Don Center for Innovative Technology and Decision Sciences. The center is gaining a reputation for engaging events that draw a crowd and feature industry leaders as panelists.

Juan Jaramillo, PhD, Honored With LIBN Diversity in Business Award

An associate professor of decision sciences and the academic director of the Master of Science in Business Analytics program at the Willumstad School, Juan Jaramillo, PhD, recently received the Long Island Business News Diversity in Business Award. He is also a member of the school’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, the University Diversity Committee and co-chair of the Faculty of Color Network. In addition, Dr. Jaramillo supports diversity and inclusion at Adelphi by using his connections to companies in Latin America to widen the perspective of Adelphi business students.
Entrepreneurial Alumni Share Benefits of Partnerships

The Insights From Experts lecture series (formerly The Practitioner’s Perspective) held a panel discussion in which three alumni shared their experiences as entrepreneurs and discussed how they have used networking and partnerships to build their businesses. Matthew Tesoriero ’07, co-founder and CEO at GUAC SHOP Mexican Grill; Ismael Voltaire, MA ’19, CEO and co-founder of Voltaire Business Consulting; and Rayan Almathhur, MS ’19, co-founder of Voltaire Business Consulting, shared their stories and answered questions about being an entrepreneur.
Don Center "Supply Chain 4.0" Event Draws 100-Plus Attendees
 
The Elizabeth and Allen Don Center for Innovative Technology and Decision Sciences at the Willumstad School kicked off spring with a well-attended panel discussion on Zoom, titled "Supply Chain 4.0."
                   
Distinguished speakers included Steve Schnittger, vice president, global microbiology R&D, Estée Lauder; Diana Sen, partner, Global Source to Pay Consulting, Genpact; Karla Rangel, IBM supply chain specialist and blockchain advocate; Mark Temkin, senior director of demand planning and S&OP, Radienz Living, and member, board of directors, Association for Supply Chain Management, New York Division, Long Island; Duncan Klett, co-founder, Kinaxis; and Thomas Sproat, senior director, Tradelens/GTD Solutions.
 
Introduced by Willumstad Professor Gita Surie, PhD, and skillfully moderated by Stephen Davy, MBA '88, executive in residence, Don Center, the event attracted 134 students, alumni and local executives. An informative and interactive discussion was followed by a lively Q&A with participants on various aspects of supply chain management and employment opportunities therein for Adelphi graduates.
STUDENT NEWS
Willumstad Leadership Scholars Matthew Gornstein and Peri Finkelstein introduced guest speakers at the Insights From Experts and Don Center events held during February. Undergraduate business majors in their senior year have the opportunity to participate in this selective program that focuses on leadership development and working on a consulting-style project as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Khue Cho (fourth from right) participated in the Northeast Greek Leadership Association Conference.
Khue Cao worked as a student staff member for the Northeast Greek Leadership Association (NGLA) Conference in Baltimore, Maryland, on behalf of Delta Sigma Pi. The NGLA Conference is the biggest Greek life event in the Northeast region, with up to 500 attendees, happening every year at the end of February. Cao was proud to represent Delta Sigma Pi and Adelphi University in such an amazing way. In 2023, NGLA will hold its conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, so stay tuned if you are involved in Greek life.

Raghida Abdallah Yassine, PhD, assistant professor, was featured on Zippia in a posting on skills that stand out on human resources associate résumés.
 
Rakesh Gupta, associate professor, was featured in WalletHub posting on common mistakes people make when shopping for a car.
 
Professor Mariano Torras, PhD, had a letter published in The Financial Times: Letter: Defining sustainability is a challenge for investors.
 
Associate Professor Nicholas Koumbiadis, MBA '01, DBA, and adjunct faculty Martin Farrell’s co-authored paper, “Beyond the Numbers: Are Ethics and Fraud ‘Accounted’ for in the Business World," has been accepted for publication in The Intercollegiate Journal of Innovation, Diversity & Multiculturalism.

Professor Susan Li, PhD’s co-authored journal article, "An extended cross-efficiency evaluation method based on information entropy with an application to the urban logistics industry," was just published on Emerald Insight. It will be assigned to an issue of the Journal of Modelling in Management.

Professor Zhimin Huang, PhD’s co-authored journal article, "How retailer overconfidence affects supply chain transparency with manufacturer encroachment," was published in Springer Link before it is to be assigned to an issue of Annals of Operations Research in 2022.

Accounting Society Panel Discussion
March 29, 6:00 p.m.8:00 p.m.
This session will address different career paths in accounting. It will be held in Nexus Building, Room 239, COVID-19 guidelines permitting. Six alumni will discuss the different paths they have taken in pursuing their careers, including two from CPA firms, two from different industries, one from the FBI and a moderator who has also chosen a different career path.
 
Excel Training
The Willumstad Winning Edge cocurricular program offers business students a series of training sessions on Microsoft Excel, with the ultimate goal of getting certification in Microsoft Office Specialist for Excel. Contact Lori Cary, MBA ’20, interim director for student success, for details and to register.
