Dear Students and Colleagues,
 
The Garden City campus is abuzz with all the beauty the spring season brings. Here in the Willumstad School of Business, we have our own spring energy, with plenty of events and activities. 
 
We are excited about the annual Business Plan Competition, which will take place as part of the Scholarship and Creative Works Conference on April 26. Our annual Honors and Awards Ceremony will happen on April 28. Our Accounting Volleyball Networking Event will be in early May. We have also included several highlights from the past month.

Alumni Discuss Career Paths in Accounting
 
The Accounting Society hosted a panel discussion about career paths available to students with a degree in accounting. Panelists shared insights into accounting careers other than working at a CPA firm and in the field of auditing or taxes. The event was moderated by Arianna Savoca ’13, MBA ’14, human resources manager at Grassi & Co, and featured:

  • Tomislav Kostadinov ’10, director of data governance at American Express
  • Lauren Mangiafreno ’19, MBA ’20, staff tax accountant at EY
  • Michelle Gagnon ’16, MBA ’18, forensic accountant at the Federal Bureau of Investigation
  • Anthony Moneta ’13, MBA ’14, assurance senior manager at PwC
  • Shannon Conerty ’15, MBA ’16, senior accountant at the New York Mets
Don Center Panel Addresses the Future of Work
 
Three expert panelists addressed the implications of COVID-19 and technology on the future of work during a virtual session held on March 29 and sponsored by the Elizabeth and Allen Don Center for Innovative Technology and Decision Sciences. C. Evan Smith of Metamorphosis Management Group, LLC; Ali Mohammed, chief technology officer at Broadridge; and Heather Myers, founder and CEO, Spark No. 9 LLC, provided advice and insights for students, employees and managers relevant to working in 2022 and beyond.
APICS AU Hosts Guest Speaker
 
On March 28, the Willumstad School's supply chain management club, APICS AU, hosted Jared Mroz, executive director at Morgan Stanley, for a discussion on advice for seeking a career at Morgan Stanley. Mroz also discussed his experience leading globally diverse teams focused on both technical operations and network engineering.
STUDENT NEWS
Willumstad Leadership Scholar Barbara Quagliardi ’19, spoke at the Women’s Leadership Conference that took place on March 26. She was part of the awards and keynote portion of the program.
 
Angie Zamora and Danny Lozano spent their spring break in Cologne, Germany, as part of the TAVEC (Trans-Atlantic Virtual Exchange and Collaboration) project with Hochschule Fresenius. Associate Professor Rakesh Gupta and Assistant Professor Raghida Abdallah Yassine, PhD, accompanied the students on the trip.
IN MEMORIAM

It is with great sadness that we share that Matteo Cannavera ’18, passed away on March 8. Cannavera majored in finance and was an MVP on the men’s tennis team during his time at Adelphi. We offer our sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

Zahra Sedighi Maman, PhD, assistant professor, and Eunji Lim, PhD, assistant professor, have been awarded Faculty Development Grants for 2021–2022 by the Office of the Provost.

Associate Professor Rakesh Gupta was part of a Long Island Business News online panel on March 10.

Raghida Abdallah Yassine, PhD, assistant professor, was featured in HR Magazine's Spring 2022 edition for her article HR burnout: Putting out the fire.

James F. Bender clinical professor of finance Robert Goldberg co-authored a paper, "A Proposal for a New Type of Charitable-Business Structure: The Donor-Investor Organization," which has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Sustainable Finance & Investment.

As part of the Scholarship and Creative Works Conference, students from across Adelphi will participate in the annual Business Plan Competition. Join us in person or on Zoom as Panthers present their business plans and compete for $11,000 in prize money, including a $1,000 prize for the best plan relating to environmental, social and governance criteria.

Major Field Test for Graduating Students
Graduating business students are required to participate in Assurance of Learning (AoL) activities as a condition of graduation. The activities include completing the ETS® Major Field Test (MFT). Students can learn more in their assigned Learning Assurance Moodle courses, titled Adelphi WSB Core Knowledge Resource (Undergraduates) or MBA Learning Assessment (Graduate). They can also sign up here.
 
Accounting Volleyball Networking Event
Date: Friday, May 6: Time: 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
Location: Center for Recreation and Sports

Approximately 60 professionals from 15 different firms, including many Adelphi alumni, will be participating in this event. In addition to teaming with these professionals, students are also invited to join us for a barbecue lunch in the Campbell Lounge. This event represents a great opportunity to network with professionals in a relaxed, less formal setting. There will also be a raffle held during lunch at which various prizes will be awarded to raffle winners. Students can complete a Google registration form.
