October 2017
Dear Fellow Deans:

Greetings from Garden City, New York!

Fall has arrived. Here on Long Island, the leaves are changing colors, the temperature is cooler, and we are attired more warmly. The semester is in full swing—classes, speakers, events! I share here some of what’s happening at the Willumstad School.

Rajib Sanyal, Ph.D.
The School recognized and celebrated this year’s recipients of the prestigious Bender Awards, named after James Bender, Ph.D. , the first dean of the Willumstad School of Business. The most esteemed of the awards, for Body of Work, was received by Charles R. Baker, Ph.D. , professor of accounting (pictured, in the middle). A preeminent historian of accountancy, he has published more than 50 refereed articles, made over 100 conference presentations, and written numerous books and chapters in books, and is presently an editor of eight journals. You can view his profile here .
The first speaker in our themed lecture series this semester was Randy Leach ’99 , global solutions director in healthcare at UPS Supply Chain Solutions. His talk, “Trucks, Planes, Trains, Drones and Trees: The Supply Chain at UPS," offered absolutely fascinating insights into how the company is imaginatively addressing innovation, social responsibility and sustainability.
In partnership with the Long Island chapter of SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management), we hosted a human resources analytics workshop for students and faculty that brought together three industry professionals to discuss and explain how big data is changing decision-making in the HR field. This program is part of our ongoing goal of expanding data analytics in our curriculum.
