IRS Notice CP53E Scam Warning

The IRS issues a CP53E notice when a taxpayer’s refund cannot be deposited due to missing or incorrect bank information. As the IRS continues to phase out paper checks, more taxpayers may receive legitimate CP53E notices.

Unfortunately, scammers are taking advantage of this by sending highly convincing fake CP53E notices in an attempt to steal banking information.

Be cautious and look for these warning signs of a scam:

  • Includes a QR code
  • Instructs you to respond via text, email, or phone
  • Directs you to a website other than IRS.gov
  • Requests payment via gift card, prepaid card, or other unusual methods
  • Uses urgent, threatening, or inconsistent language
  • Claims an IRS employee can update your bank account information on your behalf

If you receive a CP53E notice, verify it through IRS.gov or consult your accountant before taking action. Do not call phone numbers listed on the notice or scan any QR codes.

Social Security & Retirement Planning: A Hit or Myth Proposition

Social Security's retirement program has been a basic part of American life for more than 90 years. But, despite the age, the size, and the economic impact of the Social Security system, the myths and misunderstandings about what the program is, as well as what it is not, are sizeable.

Now, as Baby Boomers reach retirement age, they are beginning to realize that Social Security is going to play a bigger role in their retirement than they had previously thought. However, they are also starting to realize that they do not know as much about the program as they should.

Kurt Czarnowski, the Social Security Administration’s former Regional Communications Director for New England, will provide a wealth of information about the system. He will cover topics such as when someone can start to collect, the available options if someone changes his/her mind, how a retirement benefit is calculated, and the impact of working in retirement. He will also discuss spousal, divorced spousal, and survivor benefits, the taxation of benefits, and how someone goes about applying.
