I hope you are enjoying your summer. This is the time of year when many students are moving on to a new school. We want to be sure that you receive all of the relevant information for your child. It is important that subscribers update their profiles and be sure that The Falcon Flyer continues to be able to communicate with all of our parents and community members. Each building is able to communicate with their parents with information that is relevant only to that school. In order to be sure you are signed up for the correct building(s) please update your Falcon Flyer subscription TODAY! Follow the steps below to get information on updating your profile. The rollover for the new school year will be done this week. Please complete this task by Wednesday, August 18 - Deadline has been extended!
1. Click this link and type in your email address that receives the Falcon Flyer.
(Please note if you have multiple emails registered, you will have to do it for each address).
2. Click Join
3. Click the submit button to have the update email sent to your email address.
4. Check your email, follow the prompts and select the appropriate boxes. Everyone should continue their subscription to the FalconFlyer. Remember this will give you district wide news and emergency information. Then select all schools for which you wish to receive updates.
5. If you are a resident who does not have children in the district or if you are a senior citizen in the community, there is nothing for you to do. All of your information will come through the regular FalconFlyer.
If there are no school changes for your child, there is nothing else for you to do. I do hope that those parents who had children graduate this year, will continue their subscription to the Falcon Flyer. You can simply deselect the specific school and get only notifications from me. We will continue to provide our entire community with relevant community event information, senior citizen corner news, and emergency updates, in addition to the regular school news. If you are moving out of the Burlington Township community, simply select unsubscribe at the bottom of any newsletter and you will be removed from our mailing list.

The Burlington Township School District has centralized student registration. What this means is that students K-12 are registered in one location. Parents must register students at the Board of Education Offices - Hopkins Building which is located at 700 Jacksonville Road. Please enter Hopkins
Building off of Fountain Ave. by the High School main entrance, to access the rear of the Hopkins Building. You will enter through door #16A.

| YMCA Pre-K Program |
|  The YMCA of Burlington and Camden Counties will be operating a Pre-Kindergarten program in the Fountain Woods Elementary School. The program will run Monday through Friday from 7:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. for the duration of the school year. Well-trained and qualified YMCA staff will prepare your child for Kindergarten through utilization of the Creative Curriculum, providing a safe and fun environment, and developing the whole child throughout the year, a sure recipe for success!

| Child Find for Special Education Services |
|
Special Education Services: Students with disabilities that significantly impact upon their educational progress may be eligible for special education and related services. Upon referral, the Child Study Team (School Psychologist, Learning Consultant and Social Worker) will meet with the family to discuss concerns and to determine if evaluation is necessary. If a student is found to be eligible, an Individual Education Program (I.E.P.) will be developed to meet the educational needs of the student. Programs may include accommodations and modifications in the general education setting to small class instruction with a special education teacher. All decisions regarding the IEP are discussed at least annually and the parent/guardian is encouraged to be an active participant in the process.
Preschool for Students with Disabilities: Do you suspect that your child is slow in developing language or find he/she is having difficulty socializing with others? Your child may be eligible for the Burlington Township School District's Preschool Disabilities Program. This program is open to children between the ages of 3 and 4 years 11 months. For further information contact the Child Study Team Office at 609 387 3955 ext. 2060 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

| This is it. The countdown to the start of a new school year has begun. The anticipation of both parents and students is surely running high at this time. This has been a beautiful summer that many of us wish would never end. I know parents throughout Township are singing that "infamous jingle", "it's the most wonderful time of the year." You are in the stores happily purchasing school supplies for your children. This Back To School Edition of the Falcon Flyer will provide you with some really important information that will prove beneficial as you start to prepare for a new school year. Don't forget to complete your summer reading survey. It is very important that your child submits a completed survey electronically by Friday, September 9, 2016. High School students who do not have English scheduled until semester two may submit the survey any time prior to the fourth day of semester two. Elementary students will earn an incentive coupon for their participation. Middle and high school students will earn a first marking period homework grade for their participation. Please be sure that your child is still reading at least twenty minutes a day. Studies have shown that students lose ground during the summer if they don't keep their reading skills in tune. Set your child up for success by encouraging them to read. What could be better than family D.E.A.R. time (Drop Everything And Read). It is never too late to start. I hope this letter finds you and your family well and enjoying summer! The school district staff has been busy getting ready for the new school year which begins
Tuesday, September 6
. New programs are being readied for staff and students.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION BEING DELIVERED VIA EMAIL
Families will receive an email containing your individual child's SNAPCODE. Using the unique snapcode for each child, you will be able to submit the electronic emergency information in the same way as last year. In addition, the annual operations letter with important information about transportation, cafeteria, student insurance and safety, will be delivered electronically. If you do not have email or internet access, please contact your child's school for assistance.

is to develop the potential of each student in partnership with our community. Our

includes ALL students achieving to their highest potential, and providing the BEST programs, the SAFEST schools, a HIGHLY ENGAGED community, and the MOST EFFICIENT district.
The district's plan for 2016-2017 includes instructional initiatives using adaptive assessments and strategic planning. Our plan also includes initiatives to address climate and well-being. The district is committed to providing families with information and we look to expand our delivery of valuable information using live sessions and technology. The 2016-2017 All Students Achieving Plan may be viewed in its entirety on our website.
REFERENDUM UPDATE
The district has been busy working on the referendum projects. Bonds were sold in June at an interest rate of 1.79% for 10 years. This was better than the projections!
The projects are underway and pictures are posted on our referendum website. The roof at B. Bernice Young School is progressing nicely. The toilet room renovations in Young School and Hopkins are also progressing. The parking lot and loop at the Hopkins Building have been completed. The track and football field drainage projects are underway.
NEW TECHNOLOGY AND PARCC IMPACT
The Middle School and Fountain Woods will each benefit from additional chromebooks either in the classroom or on carts. The High School has planned delayed openings to assist with PARCC testing administration or to help consolidate PARCC testing time. The additional technology and change in schedule are intended to reduce the length of overall time each building is impacted by PARCC testing.
PARENT UNIVERSITY OFFERING - BTPD BODY CAMERAS
We are pleased to announce the kick off program for the 2016-17 Parent University program. The first program will focus on police body cameras and school safety. Our School Resource Officers (SRO) are sworn Burlington Township Police Officers. The police department has adopted a body camera system for all officers. All parents are invited to join us and the BTPD on Tuesday, August 30 at 6:30pm for a demonstration and question and answer session on this topic. We will also have a speaker for parents regarding current trends with teens. Safety is a top priority and we know that an aware community is a safer community. High School students are welcome to join us for these discussions.
PREVENT THE SUMMER SLIDE!
Please encourage your children to continue to
read and write
over the summer. Everyone has a story to tell! Each of us has something that makes us excited and brings a deep sense of identity. Encouraging your child to read about new experiences or write stories are excellent ways to enhance communication skills. Please remember to complete the summer reading survey before school starts. Information may be found on our website.
Practice math
with your child, using everyday experiences to demonstrate the practical applications we see on a daily basis. Have your child practice math facts during a car trip, count change, calculate tax or discounts when you make a purchase. Look for shapes and patterns in your surroundings. All of these "fun" activities will help to reinforce the math basics relevant to your child's grade level.
Also encourage your children to
"do" science
by observation, inquiry and hypothesis. These talents come naturally to our children and with the resources available today on smartphones and the internet, the opportunities for learning are all around them. Hands on, minds on!

You will NOT have to complete this form unless you need to make changes to your child's bus stop due to child care issues.
If your child is going to need Accommodation Bussing for the upcoming school year, please fill out and return the Accommodation Bussing Form no later than this Thursday,
August 18th, 2016.

This is very important news for all parents who will require their child to use a bus stop that is different from what will be assigned based on your address.
Here is an example of a situation that would require special bussing accommodations: 1. My child has a babysitter or grandparent , providing child care, who lives in a different area of Township. The child would have to be picked up and dropped off at the sitter's address then you would apply for accommodation bussing to have the child picked up and dropped off at the grandparent or sitter's Burlington Township address.
Also, those students who will not be using the Township school busses and will be either walkers, transported by parents or will be bussed by a Day Care, please click the Accommodation Bussing link to submit this information to transportation. This will assist the elementary school with ensuring the correct information is encoded on the student ID tags before mailing them out in August.

Back to school: Seven tips for getting your children on a sleep routine
With back to school looming, now is the time to start thinking about getting your children back on a routine when it comes to getting to bed at a decent hour. Now's the time to start implementing a sleep routine that will help ensure your kids get the sleep they need each night. 
Give your kids the best chance at excelling in the classroom by making certain they get enough sleep. Students who get between nine and ten hours of sleep a night perform at their highest level.
Top tips for getting into a back-to-school sleep schedule:
- Get the kids involved when it comes to setting up a bed time. Make the process gradual rather than immediate, so kids have time to adjust.
- Set a goal to have your children back on a school sleep routine one to two weeks prior to the first day of school.
- Move bedtimes up by 15 minutes each night until you've hit the target time for bed.
- Turn off the television and other distracting electronics such as video games and iPods about an hour before bedtime. This will help your child wind down for the night.
- Set a good example for your children by getting enough sleep yourself. Your kids need between 9 and 10 hours a night and adults need 7 to 8 hours.
- Make sure your kids are getting the proper amount of exercise each day. Exercise can help your body increase the deep sleep it needs each night.
- If your child cannot sleep in total silence, invest in a white noise machine or turn on a fan.
- Be consistent; don't confuse your child's sleep pattern by changing the bedtime on weekends. Keep the same sleep time all week long.
Helping your child get into a good sleep routine will benefit their academic performance and help them become more engaged in activities in and outside of school.

The 4 year olds meet Tuesday-Friday;

on social skills, the sounds letters make, writing letters, math 1-10,
various themes throughout the year as well as learning through exploration.

e also get into simple addition and subtraction.

| Fraud |
|
We are asking for our residents assistance in an important matter. The Burlington Township School District continues to remain diligent by investigating
and acting upon reports of residency fraud. We have been made aware of numerous cases of children who reside outside the community and illegally attend our schools. This equates to theft of services and taxpayer dollars.
When the District becomes aware of such situations, an investigation is conducted and the appropriate actions are taken, which may include removal of children from school, reporting the incident to the police, pressing disorderly persons charges, and taking action to collect tuition. Over the years we have removed many students for illegal residency, have pressed charges, and assessed tuition.
It is illegal for a Burlington Township resident to allow the use of his/her address or residence by someone who resides outside the District for the sole purpose of allowing non-resident children to attend our schools. The District reports such incidents to the proper authorities, and takes other punitive actions against offenders.
No member of the school community should overlook this type of theft of
community resources. You are encouraged to report suspected incidents of
residency fraud to the school principal or Superintendent of Schools. Reports can be made anonymously to the school offices or Superintendent's office at 609-387-3955, Option 6. When a report is made, the District conducts its own investigation. The name of the reporting individual is not necessary or shared with anyone.

Summer Reading reminder for
parents and students
Surveys are due by Sept. 9, 2016!
This year we replaced our "response to reading task" with a "survey of literacy behaviors." Our survey will help us to learn more about WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY and HOW our students read. This information will be useful for teachers to know more about their students' reading interests. It will also help to inform program and resource planning staff at the building and district level. Your assistance in helping our students to complete this survey is greatly appreciated.
The goal of Burlington Township School District's Summer Reading Project is to follow the guidelines set forth by the Department of Education in encouraging our students to develop a lifelong love of reading. This year's summer reading project focuses on instilling the love of reading into the students. Your child will complete a survey of literacy behaviors to provide us with more information about reading preferences.

All Kindergarten students need to have received their booster shots to enter Kindergarten. If these requirements cannot be met before September, please contact the school nurse. 6TH GRADERS!
Pursuant to NJ Administrative Code (8:57 - 4), all students born after January 1, 1997 and entering grade 6 are required to have one booster dose of Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertusis (Tdap) and one dose of Meningococcal Vaccine (Menactra).
Please forward a copy of your child's immunization record to the Middle School nurse by September 30, 2016.
