A Few Thoughts from Ed:

So here we are in the new year and we are hopefully all looking forward to achieving our personal dreams and professional goals in 2019.  My birthday is in January so not that I needed a reminder of getting older but this time of year that fact hits me right between the eyes, or knees or back or ....

Thinking of time passing and getting older provides a sense of just how fragile life really is. We need to make the most of our life in so many ways. Here at CTS we are very focused on taking an active role in protecting our families and ourselves. Personal safety and self defense are what we are all about.

Every day we continue to read about the increase in crime and the overall attack on our way of life. It is critical we take a proactive role in protecting ourselves and our way of life. Our law enforcement assets are being overwhelmed with calls for service and challenged like never before on both the National and local levels. These men and woman need our support. However, as the world around us changes with respect to our everyday safety we need to take more responsibility as well.

This responsibility comes in many forms. From being active politically to ensure the people we elect are stewards of the constitution and stand for a united and strong government of the people and for the people. We need to also take responsibility for our safety and the safety of our families. Let us not forget what Sir Edmond Burke said in 1797: "Good people must stand against evil or else evil wins".

One needs only look at the increase in CCW holders across the country to see that at the grass roots level this is happening. I am so proud of the fact that we are filling every CCW class we offer despite the fact that these classes max out at 20 students. This trend is also reported by my colleagues across the country.

CCW class participation of this magnitude is phenomenal but we need to be aware that all classes are not created equal. I continue to encounter CCW holders who do not have a realistic understanding of the law and in some cases even basic firearm safety. The responsibility for our own safety I spoke of earlier also includes surviving the aftermath of a lethal encounter. Criminal evaluation and possible litigation criminally and/or civilly are all part of the total survival mind set.

I encourage you to spread the word to your family and friends across the country. Advise them to check out any training course they are considering enrolling in. Look at the facilities, the instructor experience, and the course content. These factors are more critical than we might think. I was recently contacted by an attorney from the Midwest who had a client involved in a shooting. The firearms instructor in that case had to be tracked down by a private investigator and subpoenaed in order to appear in court to assist in the case.

Obviously this is an extreme example, but they do exist more often than they should.

Another thought concerning the CCW training issue. We need to realize a CCW course should be just that...a CCW course.   Even the most comprehensive one or two day CCW courses can't adequately teach you how to fight with your firearm. The weapon skills, situational considerations, weapon manipulations, personal behavior, ballistic capability, trauma, and so much more are beyond the scope of such a class. Defensive skill oriented classes are needed to give you the best possible opportunity to win a lethal encounter if required or even better yet these type of classes should help you avoid such a situation.

In summary, I guess I am trying to say that before you undertake any type of serious training, do your due diligence. Be sure your training expectations will be met before you lay down your hard earned money.

Apart from training class enrollment, we continue to see an increase in new shooters at the facility and we appreciate all of you who spread the word about what we offer at CTS.  Our entire management team is dedicated to re-focusing our efforts on product selection and customer service.  Our mantra of "Better Product, Better Service, Better Experience" is very important to us all.  Please hold us to this standard as we will always strive to provide this exceptional experience to everyone.

I'll get off my soap box now....Happy New Year and ...BE SAFE ....

Consignment Corner

Welcome to the consignment corner.  Remember many of the consignment guns have additional accessories.

We are unable to display or list many of the accessories that are often included with our consignment guns.   Items such as extra magazine (sometime 7 or 8 extra mags) holsters, tools, storage containers, ammunition, etc.

All of these extras add up to the overall value of the sale.  Imagine buying a $500.00 handgun that also has with it six $60.00 mags, that's quite a savings all for $500.00.

ASK THE STAFF ABOUT EXTRAS

We have developed such a great reputation with respect to our consignment firearms that many of you come in and ask about our stock every week.

GSSF Update

glock logo
2019 is here and with it a start to the new cycle for GSSF. I am looking forward to this year but want to take a moment to look back. First of all I want to acknowledge my appreciation to all of the people who have participated in GSSF this past year. With the ability to compete in up to three classifications, we have seen an increase in participation and an increase in the competiveness overall. It is truly a pleasure to have all of you come in and shoot, laugh, commiserate when it doesn't go as well as you would like, and to celebrate when it goes better than you thought. It has been fun and I expect it to get even better.

Now, on to this year and a change to the Pocket Glock classification with a new course of fire that I think will add some fun and challenge to this category. I know how much all of you enjoy the 75 foot targets in the stock and unlimited classifications (okay maybe not), and how those of you who shoot in the Pocket Glock category wish you had a 75 foot target (okay maybe not). Well, I tried to get that for you but I guess I just didn't convince GSSF well enough to get that included in this new course of fire. I feel your disappointment, but believe me I will continue to try and convey your desires so we can be successful in the future to have that 75 foot target (no, you can't throw anything at me this month). What has changed is not the distances, times or rounds fired, but that we will be shooting single handed with both the dominant and support hands. I am sure that all of you shooting in Pocket Glock will not see this as a challenge since you all shoot so well, but at least it is a bit of a change. As we do with the other classifications, we will rotate the course of fire each quarter and we will start with the new course of fire in January rather than wait until April.

I can see you all jumping for joy with the change, even though you were hoping for the 75 foot target and have gotten over your disappointment. I will see you on the 19th with the new course of fire and look to see who will be the first to get the 250 patch.

Bullseye League Update
Some Exciting New Changes

The bullseye league is slightly changing the start times for each session. We will be shooting the National Match Course sessions at 4:45 pm, 5:30 pm, and 6:15 pm. We want to give participants more opportunities to shoot. We will only be shooting the 6:15 match if the previous sessions are full. The bullseye matches are a family ev ent. We have several husband and wife teams that shoot, as well as some parent/child and grandparent/grandchild shooters. All shooting levels encouraged to come and shoot. There is no better way to focus on your trigger press.

CTS is starting a high average shooter award program for both 1 handed and 2 handed shooters. CTS will give away engraved Stainless Steel cups 3 times a year. The cup will have the Center Target Sports Logo on one side and the shooters name and date of the award on the other side. The awards will be given out every 4 months...one for Jan-Apr, one for May-Aug, and one for Sept-Dec.

During each four month period there are 16 or 17 weeks of shooting. We are only averaging the rim fire scores, so the Fun Shoots and the Bastard Aggregate shoots with the center fire pistols on the first Thursday of each month do not count. To be eligible to win the award a participant must shoot at least 9 rim fire matches during the four month period. All rim fire scores for the 4 month period will be used to establish the participant's average score. If the participant shoots less than 9 matches in the prescribed 4 month period they will not be eligible for the award unless there are holidays during that period. Holidays will be subtracted from the 9 match eligibility requirement. Scores from one four month period do not carry over into the next four month period.

The bullseye schedule is as follows:

1st Thursday of even months: Fun Shoot (For a score, must fire with a centerfire cartridge)
1st Thursday of Odd Months: Bastard Aggregate (Rimfire and centerfire scored together)
2nd Week of the month: 50 foot target (Rimfire cartridge)
3rd Week of the month: 75 foot target (Rimfire cartridge)
4th Week of the month: 50 foot target (Rimfire cartridge)
5th Week of the month: 75 foot target (Rimfire cartridge)

Come join us and enjoy your shooting time.

Gunsmith Dept Update:

As many of you know, Clint is an amazing gunsmith who does awesome work.  As a result of his skills the word is spreading and his workload is picking up on a daily basis.  He is meticulous in his process and will not compromise quality for speed.

Please realize that he works on firearms based on when he receives them.  He is rarely able to look at a gun and repair it while the customer waits for it.  In most cases the firearm will be taken in for service and put in the workflow rotation.  If you have a firearm in need of Clint's expertise, he will be happy to provide both a cost estimate and a time estimate based on the availability of parts when you bring in the firearm.

Hours for our Gunsmith Dept are Tues-Sat 1pm-6pm.

This Month's Shooting/Safety Tip

Everyday Tactics of the Criminal Mind

Most street crimes are driven by the pursuit of power.  We often fail to recognize this by focusing on the balance of the headline. "Man robs liquor store" "bank robbed at gunpoint" Statements such as these seem to imply that robbery is the key element to focus on. But a more comprehensive analysis will often lead to the power element. All of us seek power in one form or another.  The problem is power can be used responsibly or irresponsibly.  Criminals crave power and will do virtually anything to have it.  They believe other people and their property exists for their benefit. The guy who today sticks a knife in your face and demands money is the same guy that stole your milk, or lunch money back in grade school.  Most crimes of violence are crimes of opportunity.  I want you to limit those opportunities.

Criminals use weapons of many forms. CCW gun

The criminal will often use deception to catch people off guard.  His secrecy gives him a great advantage and provides him a sense of power.  Intimidation is another often used weapon by the criminal.  His domineering manner may be so menacing that he need never utter a threat, raise his voice, or clench his fist.  Other times, a display of anger accomplishes his purpose.  The outburst is usually carefully orchestrated, expertly timed and displayed dramatically.

Dominating the victim is the primary objective of the criminal and they will often resort to violence as a last resort.  With self-image at stake predictability is a serious issue as you decide on a course of action.  Criminals expect you to comply with their commands.  So, he gives you an order (give me your wallet) and he expects and waits for you to comply.  If he wanted to hurt you, he would simply walk up to you and attack you without warning.  But this is typically not what happens.

Raise Your Level of Awareness!

I believe that raising your level of awareness is the single most effective way to keep yourself and those around you safe.  Col. Jeff Cooper developed the Combat Mind set Color Code System.  Although others have added colors and applied additional theories to Col. Cooper's original 4 color format, I believe in keeping it simple.  If four colors were good enough for Cooper, they are good enough for me.  Take a second to note the colors and associated mind set listed below.
  • White - Unaware and unprepared
  • Yellow - Relaxed alert.  No specific threat situation
  • Orange - Specific alert.  Something is not quite right and has gotten your attention
  • Red - Fight Mode. Your mental trigger has been tripped (established back in Condition Orange).  You take appropriate action.
Ideally, you should go about your day in Condition Yellow.  Being alert gives you the edge.  As we have said time after time, "Action beats Reaction every time".  I don't care how fast you are with whatever weapon system you choose.  If your first indication you are in trouble is the contact with the criminal on his terms, you have an uphill battle ahead.

Train yourself to trust your instincts.

If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't.  Don't blow it off.  In the past few months we have had two female students in a 3 week period who had to draw their CCW in order to stop a would be attacker. Both incidents happened in a shopping parking lot between 9 and 10 pm. Neither woman had to fire a shot in fact one student was able to divert the attacker when the attackers accomplice realized the student was prepared for the attack. The accomplice recognized that the student had retrieved some sort of weapon so he yelled at the would be attacker "Leave the B _ _ _ h alone". I believe these women would never have been able to retrieve their firearms had they not been aware enough to recognize an attack was imminent.

When you observe criminal behavior or a perceived threat, get away or avoid it if you can.  If that doesn't work and you are victimized, a plan of action and speed in execution may be your salvation.  When he says "This is a stick up" he must wait for you to comply.  It is during this critical time that you must act.  If you are going to run, run.  If you are willing and able to fight, fight and WIN....
