A Few Thoughts from Ed:

Hello everyone.  As I write this article it appears that spring is finally in the air.  With spring we experience so many changes.  Here at CTS we are also preparing for carpet cleaning, inventory adjusting and much more.  One of the changes I am looking forward to is the introduction of some new tools to help enhance our training programs.

We recently invested in some of the most state of the art training devices.  We will soon be introducing this new technology in every level of training we offer.  We have a new laser target system that will allow our basic students to enhance their shooting fundamentals prior to shooting the live fire section of the class.  Our more advanced students will also be able to work on firearm presentation, multiple targets and par times while still in the classroom.

For the Defensive level classes we have purchased a shoot/no shoot simulator with over 160 FBI approved lethal/non-lethal scenarios.  In addition, this system allows us to video our own scenarios to really bring the training home to our North Idaho environment.  Equally as exciting is the new set of programmable shooting glasses that allow me to alter the students vision during shooting scenarios.  I can't wait to expose our students to this new technology and look forward to witnessing the results of all your training efforts.

Last month after teaching in St Louis I came home with the flu bug.  This caused us to postpone our Tactical Pistol Class until May.  I appreciate all the students patience with this  postponement.  I felt terrible but also realized that this was only the 2nd time in 14 years I was not able to teach a scheduled class.  It has been rescheduled for May 25 & 26 and we'll be using some of the new technology I talked about above.

Notes from Peggy:

A reminder that we short the website spaces in our classes.  If the website says full, please call the range to see if there's one spot available.

We're always looking for new ideas for products, for free clinics or suggestions for the range.  Just shoot me an email (no pun intended) and we'll see what we can do.

Thank you to everyone who continues to donate to the Women's Shelter by bringing in toiletries and old cell phones.  Thank you from all of us.

ID Enhanced CCW Going Strong

As we anticipated, the Idaho CCW Enhanced has taken off since the State of Washington came on board.  Our entire team is so proud to have our training programs recognized as the best in the Northwest. The proof is in the pudding when so many of you say "I'll wait for an opening". That is the greatest praise any instructor can receive.

RETENTION I guess there are many reasons why we have exceeded 25,000 students in 14 years here at CTS. The number one reason in my mind is all of you.  You the students who demand to get your money's worth in training and seek out the best instruction available.

Thank you, and understand we will continue to schedule as many classes as possible in the upcoming months. We have always required our CCW students to qualify with their firearm. Now that the State requires you to shoot 98 rounds we have again added a standard to the 98 rounds. Idaho does not have a shooting requirement beyond the number of rounds, but we require a standard of performance to be met.

As you know, I come along for the ride if you are ever in any criminal or civil litigation and I want you to be in the best possible position to win both the fight in the street and the one in the courtroom. The curriculum we teach in the CCW classes far exceeds any State standard. We address every aspect of concealed carry from State statutes to ballistics, to practical application of defense, and much more.

Call today to get signed up for the next class.  208-773-2331

Consignment Corner

Welcome to the consignment corner.  Remember many of the consignment guns have additional accessories.

We are unable to display or list many of the accessories that are often included with our consignment guns.   Items such as extra magazine (sometime 7 or 8 extra mags) holsters, tools, storage containers, ammunition, etc.

All of these extras add up to the overall value of the sale.  Imagine buying a $500.00 handgun that also has with it six $60.00 mags, that's quite a savings all for $500.00.

Gunsmith Corner

Oh the wonders of Google.   It is a plethora of information that is at the fingertips of those who quest for knowledge. The unfortunate down side when it comes to firearms is that there is as much or more incorrect information as there is useable advice.

Before I continue I want you to know that I use google often to search out information on antique and obsolete firearms. I also try to carefully sort out the writers that have expertise in the field of Gunsmithing.

When the average novice decides to build or modify their favorite firearm they often  start by seeing how easy it is on the internet. At this point they are flooded with written and video advice from thousands of sources. Being human, we tend to believe that which supports our desire. Therein lies the bugaboo. I can show you a website with instructions on how to disassemble/assemble most any firearm you desire, but rarely does the person posting go into the specifics of gas systems, recoil systems and the millisecond timing required to get either to work reliably.

Part of my job here at Center Target Sports is to teach owner orientation classes and the AR Armorers course. The orientation courses are firearm / manufacturer specific and are free if you purchased your firearm here. In the class I include in the explanation all the things that aren't covered in the user's manual. I teach the hands on version of field stripping, cleaning, storage and transport. I also do my best to answer all student questions. The more you understand about how and why a firearm functions the less likely you are to experience reliability issues caused by user error. The common stove pipe jam is a great example. 95% of the time it is related to user error.

I encourage everyone to become as knowledgeable as possible about their chosen weapons and to use the internet with care when seeking that knowledge. Too many times I have heard "It looked so easy on You tube".

Until next time shoot safe and shoot often.

Tactical Pistol (2 days) - May 25-26

fof This is the most advanced pistol class taught anywhere in the region.  This is a two day class that requires students to conduct live fire exercises as well as Use of Force scenarios held in our tactical bay using our shoot house modular walls and halls system.

This modular system allows us to create hallways and doorways along with corners that must be negotiated by the students.  Each student will participate in scripted exercises that may require any level of response from less lethal to deadly force.

I know this all sounds good but you must have completed
Defensive Handgun 2 in order to enroll in this class.

Defensive Handgun 2 - April 13

This is an 8 hour course limited to 10 students. The primary goal of this course is to develop the defensive handgun and personal skills necessary to not only survive but control a lethal encounter. This course builds on the skills and theories presented in CTS-201. Students will learn and practice the skills, and attitude essential to surviving a lethal threat or confrontation.

RETENTION The course will include both classroom presentations and live fire range exercises. A combination of Dry Practice and Live Fire with Real World Scenarios including multiple threats, low light shooting, hostage rescue, wounded shooter drills, equipment malfunctions, and moving targets. This course will conclude with a Course Review and Examination.

Into to Carbine - April 12

This is a class designed with the new carbine shooter in mind.  It is as advertised an intro class.

In addition, the basic course is now a 6 hour course with very little classroom and much more shooting time on the range.

Basic Carbine scheduled May 19th!

Basic carbine is the class that teaches the proper manipulation and function of the carbine for defense.  This is an 6 hour course limited to 10 students. This course is designed to introduce students to the rifle and develop safe essential rifle skills. You will learn the short and medium range applications which are encountered by Law Enforcement/Military personnel in an urban/rural environment.

This course covers: ammunition selection, ballistics, loading, unloading and malfunctions, positions and aiming, marksmanship fundamentals, cover and concealment.

This Month's Shooting/Safety Tip

What Makes You a Low-Light Winner

I was recently teaching a non-lowlight class at a midwest police conference.  I was taken aback at  the  number of officers who looked me up to ask lowlight questions.  Since I have returned home many of you have asked about low-light issues.   What follows is a training tip previously published here about 6 years ago.   It addresses the issues many of you have asked about in recent weeks.  I hope it helps.

Recently there seems to be more and more written, discussed, and even advertised about working under low-light conditions.  Maybe I am just more sensitive to these issues as this is a subject that I am passionate about and compelled to learn more.  Through research, experimentation, and clinical study I am constantly looking for answers.

My purpose in this article pertains to how I believe you can immediately impact your low-light survivability.  Sadly, many firearms instructors spend most of their time teaching the popular flashlight techniques that have been around forever.  That's OK to a point.   Flashlight techniques are important and they need to be understood.  However, there is more to operating in the night than knowing how to hold a flashlight.

Develop an Understanding

I believe you need to develop greater understanding of the physiological and psychological aspects you will encounter while under stress in the dark.  A comprehensive understanding of these factors will allow you to select and train in the techniques that work for your particular environment and personal limitations or capabilities.  You need to understand that these are factors that affect everyone who operates in a low-light environment good guys and bad guys alike.  Developing the knowledge, tools, tactics, and techniques to "Rule the Night" and not merely exist in it could save your life.

A great place to start to improve your low-light survivability is by studying the Human Eye Physiology, Affects of Body Alarm Response (BAR) in the dark, and the low-light skills of Visual Patience, and don't overlook the importance of using  your Light Source as a Control Device.

Physiology

At a minimum, learn the function of the eye's Rods and Cones.  Understand how the Cones during day time, provide us with color and detail.  In the dark the Rods take over and allow us to see movement rather than fine detail.  Knowing where the Rods and Cones are located will reinforce why off-center viewing is so critical at night. Did you know that the amount of light we need to see at night doubles every 13 years?

Psychological

We need to understand that in reduced light, our mind will try to fill in what our eyes can't see.  This becomes even more difficult to manage under stressful conditions.  We have all heard instructors talk about Fight or Flight Response.  Lately we are hearing the term Body Alarm Response (BAR) in the place of Fight or Flight.  The BAR is the body's response to the high stress of a life threatening attack situation.  Add the psychological & physiological changes that are magnified by the lack of light and the Low-Light BAR can be the most severe you will ever experience.

"Tunnel Vision" or "Perceptual Narrowing" can be explained by the physiological and psychological changes that accompany the BAR.  As humans we have an innate tendency to narrow attention upon a threat during extreme stress.

Visual Patience

Visual patience is a term I use to describe the act of leaving your light on long enough to identify what you are looking at.  Emotions of the fight and visual patience are often mixed or confused when we attempt to analyze the high stress environment of a gun fight.

Control With Light

I believe here is where you can tremendously improve your ability to win at night.  You should learn to use light to control the bad guy.  How do you use light as a force option?  I bet I've got you wondering now.  By placing the hot spot of your light in your opponent's eyes, you reduce his ability to see you clearly and mount any type of attack as you approach.  He is unable to assess your physical conditioning, your size, determine if you are alone, look for an escape route, or look for cover, just to mention a few advantages.

If you have a quality light source, and you know how to use it, you can gain the advantages as stated above every time you confront a suspect in a diminished light environment.

I believe the single most important thing you can do to improve your survivability is to improve your understanding of operating in the low-light environment.  Never before, have we had the tools, access to the knowledge and clinical research available to us to truly "Rule the Night".
