A Few Thoughts from Ed:

Here we go again "It's Summertime!!"  We are all busy with yard work and household chores best completed in this great weather.  Peggy and I are in the same boat trying to get yard and garden looking as best they can.

We have so much happening at the range this summer I don't know where to start.  To say the COVID situation has impacted our industry would be a tremendous understatement.  We have never experienced a demand for our products and services like these past few months.  Please see below my note on classes.

The most frustrating effect COVID has had on us is the need to cancel our Customer Appreciation in the format of the past years.  Especially after coming off of the record breaking event we had last year.  As I explained in the last newsletter this was not an easy decision to make.  Especially since the non-profits are in desperate need of our support.

Don't miss the summer class (Precision Scoped Rifle) we are teaching outdoors at the beautiful Fernan Rod and Gun Club.  This class can only be taught during the good weather months and it always fills early.  We are so fortunate to have such a facility in our area and we need to support Fernan whenever possible.

A Note On Classes:  fs class rm

If you have recently tried to register for a class, you quickly found out that just about every class we are offering between now and the end of August is full.  A quick look at the schedule shows that we are also offering more classes per month than we have ever done.  We have squeezed into the schedule every class we can.  In addition to the available days for classes we must also be concerned about the welfare of our instructors.  Our instructors are teaching many more classes than normal and it is of critical importance that we keep them fresh and well rested.  We are so blessed and fortunate to have the in-house grown instructors that we have.  Not burning them out is a critical concern for us here at CTS.  I want to thank all of you for your patience.  I promise you that when you get into a class with one of our instructors you will recognize the experience was worth the wait.

Be Safe...Ed

Notes from Peggy:

If you've been trying to call CTS you'll notice that more times than not you're getting our voicemail.  As important as phones are, we believe that those customers that come to our facility deserve to be waited on first.  We work really hard to get your calls answered as soon as we can and will definitely get back to you by opening the next day.  Thank you for understanding that we are busy, busy, busy. Also thanks to all of you for your loyalty and patience.  We are in the process of hiring extra employees to ease the wait.

Reminder that we'll be closed July 4th.  Enjoy your day!

If you're waiting for the Home Defense shotgun class...thank you for your patience.  Unfortunately it will not be on our schedule until we can get shotgun ammo in our store.  Deb's looking every day for a source.

Thank you to all our loyal and new customers for helping us get through this pandemic.  We are still working hard to continue to make our business safe for everyone.  We appreciate all of your patience and compliance.

Please, if you're sick or have been around sick people, don't come in our building and expose our employees.  They are here to help you and we want to keep them safe and healthy so we can stay open!

 Customer Appreciation Day
Aug 8, 2020

We Will Have A Different Look This Year

As we indicated in last month's newsletter the current COVID situation has forced us to cancel the customer appreciation day festivities as we have previously offered them.  However we are still going to impact our three charities as best we can on August 8th.

We will set up Gaylord boxes for food and toy donations from 9am-2pm and the Blood collection mobiles  will also be here.  We hope and believe the gun community will continue to support these very needy charities even without the prospect of winning a free gun.  We promise to be back to our normal format next year even bigger and better than before.

The Vitalant Blood Bank is now taking appointment reservations online.  Please schedule your appointment ASAP. Click here:

We will also be offering FREE shooting and FREE Gun rentals that day.

Free shooting and free gun rentals all day Aug. 8th

Honoring Our Teachers, Health Care Workers and all First Responders

Center Target Customer Service
A Top Priority!

We are not perfect but we try hard.  Since the COVID crisis we have been working with a reduced staff because of a few "High Risk Employees" and we have had to modify our hours.  We were designated at the federal and local level as an essential business during the pandemic.

As many of you know during this period the industry has experienced an unprecendented demand for our products and services.  At CTS, like many in our business, we set all time new records for daily firearm and ammo sales.  This is all good and as a business owner I am exrtremely grateful.

But I do realize that all this activity and demand for product has often resulted in long lines as reduced staff tried to service increased crowds.  Too make matters worse shipping time and product availability were all working against our best efforts.

It is extremely important to me that we try hard to provide the best service we can and I realize that sometimes we fall short.  I want you all to know that we appreciate your understanding and know that if we fail to offer a smiile or do not answer the phone in a timely manner we appologize and hope you know that we continue to strive to be better.

I am extremely proud of our team here at CTS.  I can say without question that their hearts and intentions are in the best place but we are all human and sometinmes, not as perfect as we wish we could be.

Thanks again for your patience and understanding.

Wholesale Prices Going Up

As you know we are experiencing a Nation wide and Industry wide demand for our products like we have never before experienced.  As the availability pf products has diminished, our suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors are raising their prices to us.

Over the last 15 years we have never raised our prices to capitalize on the increased demand during the past critical shortages.  After Sandy Hook many retailers doubled the price of AR's and magazines.  Center Target Sports maintained our normal prices.  We refused to allow consignees of AR rifles to put unfair prices on their rifles.  In fact, we called a number of the consignees and told them to lower their prices or remove their guns from our store.

I want you to know that it appears we will be seeing some price increases in the products we sell, especially ammo and guns.  Our promise to you is that we will only raise our retail prices in proportion to the increase in wholesale prices we were charged.

We are hoping to make customers for life, not just today!

Thank you for your loyalty.

Consignment Corner

Welcome to the consignment corner.  Remember many of the consignment guns have additional accessories.

We are unable to display or list many of the accessories that are often included with our consignment guns.   Items such as extra magazine (sometime 7 or 8 extra mags) holsters, tools, storage containers, ammunition, etc.

All of these extras add up to the overall value of the sale.  Imagine buying a $500.00 handgun that also has with it six $60.00 mags, that's quite a savings all for $500.00.

Terminal Ballistics - Aug 30

If we piqued your interest about gunshot trauma in our CCW or defensive classes, you won't want to miss the "how the trauma is caused" class we call Terminal Ballistics.

This is the class that will put to rest all the myths of stopping power, knockdown power and dispel much of what we see on TV and in the movies.
This class is based on fact and science as well as testing by men and woman a lot smarter than me. However, I have studied terminal ballistics for over 30 years and have been fortunate enough to surround myself with people who live this terminal ballistic life as a profession. This is a class you will not want to miss.

Cane Defense - Aug 18

It is time again for another Cane defense class.

This is a great class for anyone who wants to learn about the many benefits of a cane for personal defense.  This medical device has many features that can come in handy even in traditional non-permissive environments.

This class is  appropriate  to all  ages, genders and physical capabilities.  This is not a martial arts class.
This is a class that  offers techniques and  skill sets that can be quickly learned and applied.

Less Lethal Practice Session - Aug 25
5:30pm

You are eligible to participate in this training session if you have successfully completed Kubotan, Cane Defense or OC spray class.

Even though the class is free, you need to call to sign up.

Gunsmith Corner

A n old issue has come up again several times in the past month. That is that "Drop in " parts are not always easily installed by the gun owner. Careful reading of the fine print often includes; "gunsmith installation is recommended".  This does not mean that you can't put it in, but it does mean that an above average level of understanding is required.

Much of my knowledge as a gunsmith is the result of less than successful forays into doing my own work. Some gunsmiths that were sympathetic and more experienced were kind enough to sit me down, explain where I went wrong, and help me correct my errors.  Over the years I have seen many more mistakes created by "I did this" and I thought if I then "did this" it would fix it.  At this point the original cheap install job has become hours of expensive time and more new parts. The lesson is it might be cheaper in the long run to hire a gunsmith up front.

Good example is:  I had an old pick-up that started to miss and lose power. I did the points and plugs without any real improvement. Turned out it needed a new fuel pump which seemed like I could handle (I am a gunsmith after all). First I learned about the fragility of bronze fittings and aged rubber lines. Then I learned that the ¼' bolts have a structural value that is easily exceeded. Lastly was the lesson about new gaskets. It cost as much in new parts that I ruined as it would have to hire the mechanic just to do the whole job. Turns out he could have gotten a used pump for less than a third of what I paid and could have saved my rubber lines and the bronze fittings. I took some more lessons on a tractor and a motorcycle. I now know that while I am well versed in the operation  of various self-loading systems for firearms I am not an expert when it comes to engines and transmissions.

There is no shame in seeking expert help.  We all have our own areas of expertise and also our areas of less than basic knowledge. I am still learning about how to increase my proficiency with firearms.  So the next time you want to add the latest widget to your favorite bang stick please consider hiring a professional first.

This Month's Shooting/Safety Tip

Concealed Carry Considerations

Given the continued interest in all things concealed carry, I thought I would offer a few considerations. It is a huge responsibility not only under the law but to you and those you would protect, to understand the law, and be prepared and trained. Notice I said prepared not paranoid. Carrying a CCW is a burden, but a burden we should all embrace. At every opportunity we need to guard against any attempt to limit our 2nd amendment rights. Responsible firearm ownership is something we should all strive to achieve, teach, share and promote. This article will not discuss firearm selection since we have covered that subject many times.

Any firearm you carry for defense must be reliable and accurate. You must know what your abilities are to safely and effectively defend yourself with this tool.

Concealment

When you carry concealed you should try to keep the firearm concealed. In Idaho you are not breaking the law if the firearm is exposed as you go about your activities. This may not be the case in some States. Be sure to know the laws in the State you are carrying in. That being said we should develop habits that not only promote concealment but will allow our gun hand to be free of obstacles to a clean weapon presentation. An example would be learning to reach for items in the grocery store with your support hand so that your cover garment stays over the firearm and your gun hand is empty.

We are not all created equally. Your body type and your size can determine the method of carry. A petite person may have difficulty carrying a large frame gun and clothing choices may have a more dynamic impact on the ultimate concealment of the firearm. A very large person may experience firearm access issues with certain holster types.  I believe it was Colonel Cooper who said "It is Concealed Carry not Comfortable Carry".

The type of firearm and size you choose will not only impact your ability to handle the firearm it will affect your carry methods. Caliber is also a major consideration and of course this is a perfect opportunity for me to share again my answer to that most asked question. "Carry the largest caliber gun... you can shoot accurately... that you are willing to carry at all times"'

Holster selection will require you to make some comfort, security, accessibility and budget considerations. Accessibility, Security and Comfort is the order of importance in my mind. But, we must also realize a quality holster is not going to be inexpensive. After all you have spent hundreds of dollars on a quality firearm, why would you settle on a cheap holster that fails in offering security, comfort or accessibility?   With a little planning you will be able to find a suitable firearm and carry method.

Foreign States

A foreign State is a State that you are not a resident of. State gun laws vary considerably. What is acceptable in some States can be very illegal in others. It is our responsibility to know the law. The first consideration we need to make is if our CCW permit is honored by the State we intend to visit. Idaho honors permits from all States that issue permits. If all States mirrored that policy our CCW life would be much simpler.

In addition to the permit being honored, some States have weapons type/style limitations. Some even have an approved list of firearms that may be brought into the State. Travel in those States with a firearm that is not approved, can result in serious penalties. Know before you Go!

Can't Carry Where You Are Going

If you are traveling in a State that does not honor your permit or you find yourself in a non-permissive environment all is not lost. We need to consider our options. Weapons of opportunity, alternative weapons such as Pepper Spray, Kubotan, Cane and tactical flashlights are all good choices. Of course along with the weapon selection comes the need to know how to use these great alternatives and in some cases supplements to the defensive firearm.

The Need to Train

As coach Bear Bryant once said "It is not your desire to train that matters...It is your desire to train to win that counts"!   Training is my greatest passion, but quality training is an absolute necessity. It is well known that in crisis, we will fight as we train.

There is no substitute for a professional firearms instructor. If you are having difficulty finding a quality instructor where you live, ask your local police department. Most quality instructors who teach law enforcement also teach civilians as well. Take classes from different, quality instructors to gain a broader perspective of the shooting arts. You will learn things from every instructor you experience. A quality instructor will not attempt to clone you. You will pick techniques, skills and concepts from each instructor and all those lessons will make you the shooter you need to be.

Summary

Choose the appropriate firearm, holster and accessories for your lifestyle. Commit to effective quality training in both firearm skills and the law. Have some serious introspective conversations with yourself and be sure of your moral, ethical, and emotional commitment to carry a concealed weapon. And above all else, when you have done you due diligence and are in compliance with your local laws... Carry Your Firearm at All Times When It is Legal To Do So!
