A Few Thoughts from Ed:
ed pic

Welcome back to our monthly newsletter.  As you already know we are very r eluctant to send email blasts and notices of any kind other than this monthly newsletter.  Given the current COVID 19 situation we have sent a couple of additional notices.  I hope you understand and realize that we will not burden you or add to your inbox with useless information.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has designated the firearm industry's manufacturing, distribution, retail and range businesses as essential critical services that should remain open during the COVID-19 pandemic.  We will continue to remain open with the limited hours of 11am - 5pm Tuesday through Sunday.  We will be closed on Mondays for the near future.   All classes have been postponed for the next few weeks.  We will keep you updated on classes as we work through the guidance provided by our health officials.  It is our intent to begin teaching at a time and in a manner that offers students and staff a healthy environment.

I have to say how impressed I am with the overwhelming support from all of you.  Especially the more than 400 students that are signed up for classes that have been postponed.  You guys ROCK and I want to assure you that we will get you rescheduled and into our classrooms ASAP.

Over  the past several weeks, we have seen an increase in individuals purchasing firearms for personal & home protection. Many of people are first time buyers with little or no previous firearm experience.  We appreciate that many of you have identified yourself as being new to firearms as this knowledge allows us to be a bit more thorough in our efforts to fit you with the best firearm choice possible.

A key component of responsible gun ownership is keeping your firearms out of unwanted hands. Whether it is for your car, your office, or your home, we have a gun safe to help make sure when your new firearm is not with you, it is safe and secure.  It is the law that all firearms include a locking method of some type or another.  If you choose to not put the firearm in a firearm specific container then please use the lock that was included with your firearm.

Equally as important as security, the basics of firearm ownership and safety immediately come to mind.  We at Center Target Sports are very concerned about firearm safety especially as is pertains to first time gun owners.  In an effort to help in this area we are examining a number of ways to get this information out to all those interested.

One method we are ready to execute as soon as it is safe for us to gather again in groups will be our next FREE clinic.  It will be for anyone new to firearms. If you purchased a firearm for the first time during this COVID period (from CTS or any other store), or you just need a refresher, this is the clinic for you.  The date is to be determined but it will be as soon as it is safe to gather in  groups.  When the date is posted, please let your friends who purchased firearms from other businesses and don't get our email, know the date!

These are unusual times.  Many have asked why we still have ammo.  Well, we were gearing up for the usual election year demand for ammo and were lucky enough to have a higher than normal inventory level when all of this happened.

We are also making the best of our range downtime to refresh the facility.  We are cleaning, repairing, improving and painting as much as possible.  We want to offer everyone a refreshed facility when things get back to normal.

Let's be proactive in the upcoming election.  This newsletter is sent to over 20,000 people many of whom are Kootenai County voters.  With the election taking place by absentee vote this is a great opportunity to express your choice for Sheriff but the request for the ballet must be made. (see Whitehead article  below  for link)

Please be safe and healthy, and again thank you all for being so supportive of our efforts and the efforts throughout our community to keep everyone healthy.

Be Safe,,,Ed

Notes from Peggy:

Please, if you're sick or have been around sick people, don't come in our building and expose our employees.  They are here to help you and we want to keep them safe and healthy so we can stay open!

Just a reminder that all classes through April 16th have been postponed.  Please call the range to reschedule for May or wait for June calendar .  I'm waiting to see what happens before putting out the June schedule.

A reminder that we will be CLOSED on Easter Sunday. Happy Easter!

Both Advanced Carbine and Precision Scoped Rifle are on the website for sign-up now.

Thank you to everyone who continues to donate to the Women's Shelter by bringing in toiletries and old cell phones.  Thank you from all of us.

Church Security Tactics and Considerations

 April 22, May 2, 24, 26

The need for security in any location where people gather to worship continues to increase across the country. Never before have we seen the congregation challenged with respect to safety as we do today.  This class will be offered for the first time in April.

On a weekly basis we receive more inquiries about church security training programs than any other.  We have been teaching church security here at CTS for over 13 years.  Thus far, all the church security training has been in a group team format or individuals attending our defensive classes to gain experience.

I have been working for almost a year on a class that would be comprehensive and focus on the most critical considerations for an individual or group of people that wish to be prepared for the role of a church security participant.

NOTE:  Because of the anticipated popularity of this class I am instituting a 6 month Blackout period on our FREE retake policy.  Students that complete this course will be able to retake the class forever for free starting in November.  Thank you for understanding this policy as this will allow us to immediately accomodate the most students in the shortest amount of time.

This is an 8 hr class limited to 10 students. The primary goal of this class is to develop defensive handgun and personal skills necessary to effectively perform the duties of armed church security.   This course will include both classroom presentations and live fire exercises. Real world scenarios including multiple threats, low-light shooting, wounded shooter drills, team tactics, equipment malfunctions, and moving targets.

Topics in this class include:

Security Team Development, Less Lethal Intervention, Pastoral Protection Elements, Post Incident Considerations, Armed Congregation - Crowd Control, Emergency Response Safe Gun Handling, Firearm Wound Proficiency, Firearm Manipulation and Refinement, Defensive Shooting Skills, Multiple Target Engagement, Moving Targets, Shooting While Moving, and Low-Light Shooting.

Rick Whitehead For Sheriff

Kootenai County Sheriff Race

The citizens of Kootenai County have a unique opportunity to effect much needed change in the leadership of the Kootenai County Sheriff's department.  Current Sheriff Ben Wolfinger has decided not to run for re-election and a number of candidates are seeking our vote.  I believe we must evaluate very closely what these candidates are saying.  We must look beyond any individual name recognition or previous experience and vote for the candidate that will make the changes in this agency that the jail deputies, patrol deputies and this community deserve.

This election year seems so different in many ways.  I don't believe we have ever seen such a huge disparity in the size of the campaign funds of the candidates for sheriff.  I would hate to think that the Kootenai County election for sheriff could be bought.

My biggest fear in this election is that too many voters are going to vote for name recognition without really looking at the issues and any particular candidate's stated improvement plans for the Sheriff's department.  We deserve better!  These candidates have had over a year to develop a comprehensive plan for change and the ultimate improvement of the agency's fiscal condition, workforce morale, and services provided to this community.

I am supporting Rick Whitehead for sheriff because he is by far the most qualified.  Don't take my word  for this.  Reach out and talk to him directly.  Ask the hard questions and read between the lines.  Do this with each candidate before you decide who to vote for.  Only then will you recognize that it is not the person with most signs but the person most qualified for whom we should vote.

Idaho's primary election this year is by absentee balloting only!

Here is the link for ordering your ballot...please take the time to do this and VOTE!  It is your right and your duty.

Consignment Corner

Welcome to the consignment corner.  Remember many of the consignment guns have additional accessories.

We are unable to display or list many of the accessories that are often included with our consignment guns.   Items such as extra magazine (sometime 7 or 8 extra mags) holsters, tools, storage containers, ammunition, etc.

All of these extras add up to the overall value of the sale.  Imagine buying a $500.00 handgun that also has with it six $60.00 mags, that's quite a savings all for $500.00.

Firearms are flying out of our consignment case. People are interested in our gently used inventory. So this is a great time to let us help you sell your firearm. Shot guns and handguns both are in high demand.

Please...if you're bringing in more than 2 guns for consignment, please call to make an appointment.  208-773-2331.

Bullseye League meets every Thursday at 4:45 and  6 pm.    If anyone is interested in shooting Bullseye, we would be happy to have you join our league. It's costs  $7 to shoot for the evening and you need 65 rounds of ammunition. The second and fourth Thursday of each month, we shoot the national match course at 50 feet. The third and fifth Thursday of each month, we shoot at 75 feet. The first Thursday of each month, we have a fun shoot. On even-numbered months, we shoot a Centerfire pistol at 50 feet using the 75 foot Target. Makes for some really interesting competition. On the first Thursday of odd numbered months, we shoot the Jack McElroy Bastard Aggregate. For this competition we shoot 30 rounds of rimfire and 30 rounds of centerfire at 75 ft.  We then add both scores together for a possible 600 point match.  So please come join us for some great competition and camaraderie. We love to have new shooters join our group and hope to see you there.

IDPA meets the 1st and 2nd Sunday of every month from 7:30-11am.  Everyone's welcome.  Come watch and learn or participate.  Newcomers always welcome. $10

Everyone is welcome to attend the educational portion of the meeting from 5-6, however due to the growing number of ladies attending, we do not have enough mentors to work with new shooters. A basic pistol course is required to attend the shooting portion.  Exceptions need to be discussed with Darla.

I f you want more information about the meetings or would like to be placed on our mailing list please contact Darla at   WOCPOSTFALLS@GMAIL.COM

New Divison for GSSF

The April GSSF match has been postponed!  We will let you know make up date when we schedule it.

As many of you are aware, Glock introduced the G44 their .22lr in January. We have had some questions about whether it will be included in the GSSF matches each month, and we will be starting a division for that model in April.  We chose April as that is the start of the next series when we start a new course of fire.

The G44 did not officially become available until after our match in January and we thought it would make it more equitable to give people time to purchase one and compete with a full cycle of three months rather than just two months. We also did not know for sure what the availability of the new model would be. Fortunately, there are ample supplies available and we know that some of you have already purchased one. So, how does this new model fit in with the monthly sessions?

There will be a new division for Rimfire and only one plaque will be provided. Anyone shooting the G44 will be able to compete and earn the 500 patch for a perfect score. Only stock G44's will be allowed to participate in the matches and any modified models will be unable to shoot them in the competition. So you now know that there will be a Stock Rimfire division and it will shoot the same course of fire as the other stock models. Yes, you get to shoot at the 75 foot targets that you all love with your G44, and I know you are all happy about that (he says with a smile on his face, or maybe it is an evil little grin).

We know those of you who have the G44 are practicing and excited to start using them in competition, so it is coming soon. I look forward to seeing who will be the first 500 shooter.

Don't Forget Our Non-Profits

Please do everything you can to keep the Food Bank and Blood Center in your thoughts and prayers.  This is such a critical time for our community Non-Profits.

Particularly hard hit is the Post Falls Food Bank and The Vitalant Blood Center.  The demand for food increases  but the availability of donations to the food bank is reduced.

The food bank gets a lot of their food from donations made by the grocery stores and the grocery stores currently do not have excess food.   Remember you can donate to the Food Bank any time of year and they are in desperate need of so much as they try to do so much with so little.

Also, the limitations on people gathering and being out and about have sure limited the blood banks ability to collect.  If you're healthy and able, please call them to schedule an appointment for a donation.

Non-lethal Practice Session
If you've taken a Center Target Sports Kubotan, Cane or OC class and want some practice time with the instructor, this is for you....it's free, but you need to call and sign up.

Draw From Holster and Rapid Fire Opportunity

The sessions are the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month from 9am to 11am. We provide a dedicated staff member (RSO) to start.  If the demand grows we will extend the opportunities.

So this is how it works.  The time allotted will be between 0900 and 1100.  Because we bring in a staff person during non operational hours the doors open at 0850 and are locked at 0900.  No one is admitted after 0900.The shooting is FREE to members and non-members are charged $5.00 cash only as the registers will not be open.

If you've taken Def HG 2 or higher here
firing line
at Center Target Sports and are interested in
an open shooting session to practice those skills this is the perfect opportunity to participate in this fun activity.

Shooters are reminded that CTS will not be providing any instruction during this activity and this is why all participants must be vetted by their completion of Def HG II.

Gunsmith Corner

Dear Center Target supporters,

As Ed stated above the President and Idaho Governor have deemed firearm related business as essential to the security and safety of our citizens. So while we have closed the indoor range and restricted our hours we are still here doing business.

I am still in my little corner and available to clean and repair your firearms so they are ready to serve you well when we get back to normal. It's also a good time to invest your stimulus in accessories for your personal, home protection or hunting firearm. Upgraded sights, optics, handguards and lights can all enhance the personal functionality of your weapon system.

I will be available 1pm to 5pm Tuesday thru Saturday to discuss your ideas and try to offer some sound advice on weapons improvements. I look forward to speaking with you and performing any upgrades you choose to invest in.

Thank you all for your continued patronage. I look forward to serving your Gunsmithing needs in the future.

This Month's Shooting/Safety Tip

Keeping Your Family Safe....

Fact: it is not that difficult...  With all the current talk about health safety I thought it would be good timing to remind us all about  personal  safety.

Keeping yourself and your family safe is easier than you may think.  But, like so many things today we are always looking for a gimmick to make washing the car easier, a pill to lose weight, in other words the easy way out.  But when it comes to safety and the protection of all things dear to us... there are no gimmicks.

The answer is one you have all heard before...raise your level of awareness.
We must understand that an attack can occur in almost any situation and for a variety of reasons. The more aware we are of our surroundings the safer we will be.

Can your body language make you a potential victim? The answer is a resounding YES!  A recent study by the Department of Justice indicated that 70% of convicted felons indicated they would not have initiated their attack if their victim would have verbally indicated their willingness to resist. Raising your level of awareness is the single most important thing you can do to keep yourself or your family safe. Beyond any defense tools you can carry, or techniques you could master, being aware is the first step in keeping safe.  Use your command voice.  If attacked in public, scream - yell and do it all with a loud deep voice.   Yell, "NO! Get away! Leave me alone!"  Don't be afraid to get verbally aggressive in your response.

Self control is an often overlooked deterrent to violence or conflict.  Many fights or arguments begin as a result of someone saying something offensive, or stupid.  Advice a teacher gave me many years ago may just be the solution here "Think before you speak". I am still amazed at how many people believe that as adults we fight "fair". Trust me, we left those days behind when we graduated school.  As adults we are often subjected to multiple attackers with weapons.

Speaking of weapons, keep an open mind.  Many very useful weapons can be found within your home or place of business.  Weapons of opportunity may just be your salvation.  Give some consideration to the items around you and think of how they may be used as a weapon. Items such as pens, rolled up magazines, keys, credit cards, and so on can be very effective.

Most attacks occur in diminished light.  CARRY a quality flashlight at all times! Don't be in dark and secluded places alone. If possible try to always go with at least one other person or a group.  Avoid stairwells when alone and don't be afraid to skip stepping into an elevator if the person inside makes you uncomfortable. Never go to the restroom in a bar or restaurant alone.

The mere thought of someone attempting to hurt you should make your blood boil.  If you can avoid trouble by all means do it.  If someone wants to bind you or take you away, it must end there.  Never allow that to happen to you.  If someone is willing to hurt you in a public place, think what they would do to you in a secluded place.

Bottom line, raise your level of awareness and refuse to be a victim

Be Safe.....
