A Few Thoughts from Ed:
My favorite time of year is upon us. The Christmas season is an additional reminder to us all that we need to take time for ourselves and our families. I know a number of you just said "Did he just say that?" I know... I know... I am trying to slow down.
There are no shortages of distractions in our lives and with a mindset towards personal safety we often
get
wrapped up with distractions to our situational awareness. Today I want to offer a simple reminder to us all to take a moment and reward ourselves with thoughts of family, friends, and the things we so cherish in life but often overlook.
Our family here at CTS is strong and full of life. Peggy, Deb, and I are so blessed to have the staff we have here ready to serve you. I think back over the years and I'm not sure that statement was always the case. In fact, this staff is not just ready to serve you everyday, they are excited to offer you any assistance possible.
We are not perfect...none of us are. All we can hope to do is put forward our best effort on a daily basis. I believe the CTS team does that very well. So as we approach the Christmas holiday take some time to share the shooting experience with those you love. If you have someone in your circle who has not experienced the pleasure and excitement of the shooting sports, take the time to offer them the experience.
This December is a special one for us at CTS. On Dec 4th we celebrated our 15 year anniversary.  
15 Years.... I can't believe it has been 15 years since we opened our doors. Many thought building a facility like Center Target Sports in North Idaho was a project destined to fail. Well, I guess we proved them wrong. But make no mistake, without a great staff, a lot of hard work, faith, prayers, family support and of course all of you, our friends and patrons, we would not have succeeded.
On the evening of December 4th we held a Members Only party at the range to celebrate our anniversary. It was a small way for us to thank so many of you for your continued support. We offered our members firearms at our employee pricing during the event, had many prize drawings and even held a town hall type forum allowing everyone to ask questions on any subject. The primary focus of the event was to have some social interaction, eat some cake, give away some prizes, say thank you and have a good time. I believe we accomplished our goal.
I was recently asked by an industry reporter "what I was most proud of at CTS?" My answer was an easy one. You see, CTS was a 30 year dream. A dream that resulted in my desire to create a safe, clean, healthy, family oriented place for people to come and enjoy shooting for any reason. In addition, I recognized the need for realistic, relevant, comprehensive firearms instruction that would accommodate students of all levels. Those factors were and continue to this day to be the cornerstones of our facility.
Across the country there are people capitalizing on the increased interest in shooting. Many take an instructor development class and call themselves instructors. They offer a class, provide questionable information, take your money and turn you loose.
I stand firm in my belief that we offer unmatched firearm's instruction and I am proud of our staff of dedicated instructors. Ken started it all as my first assistant instructor. Ken has been a Godsend to me as he has carried the load over the years in our introductory/basic classes. Although he is no longer teaching he continues to take the lead on the floor and is a great help to Deb and the entire staff on so many levels. Ken's dedication and professionalism has paved the way for the current instructors on staff. We now have Larry, Rod, PJ, and Dennis, who are all dedicated to
carrying forward the tradition of unmatched training
.
I could go on and on about the importance of training to us here at CTS. Don't worry, I won't. I believe our training policies speak for themselves. The fact that you can repeat a completed class forever for free should be a clear indication that it is the training that is most important to us and not just collecting your tuition.

joyous Christmas season and a very prosperous New Year.

The safety and liability issues don't allow us to turn the lights down when the public is using the range. We have several classes that allow you to shoot in diminished light and remember if you complete our Def HG 2 class, you can come practice at our 1st and 3rd Monday sessions. (see below). We also turn the lights down in some of our Member Fun shoots. Thanks for asking.

The Women Of Caliber
Shooting Club

Bullseye League meets every Thursday at 4:45 and
6 pm.
If anyone is interested in shooting Bullseye, we would be happy to have you join our league. It's costs
$7
to shoot for the evening and you need 65 rounds of ammunition. The second and fourth Thursday of each month, we shoot the national match course at 50 feet. The third and fifth Thursday of each month, we shoot at 75 feet. The first Thursday of each month, we have a fun shoot. On even-numbered months, we shoot a Centerfire pistol at 50 feet using the 75 foot Target. Makes for some really interesting competition. On the first Thursday of odd numbered months, we shoot the Jack McElroy Bastard Aggregate. For this competition we shoot 30 rounds of rimfire and 30 rounds of centerfire at 75 ft. We then add both scores together for a possible 600 point match. So please come join us for some great competition and camaraderie. We love to have new shooters join our group and hope to see you there.
IDPA meets the 1st and 2nd Sunday of every month from 7:30-11am. Everyone's welcome. Come watch and learn or participate. Newcomers always welcome. $10

WOMEN of CALIBER:
Our "Women of Caliber" group meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month 4:45-7pm.
Please bring eye and ear protection as well as photo ID. Dummy rounds for your specific caliber is also recommended along with 2-3 magazines if using your own firearm. If needed, CTS will loan you a handgun free of charge with purchase of their ammo.
Everyone is welcome to attend the educational portion of the meeting from 5-6, however due to the growing number of ladies attending, we do not have enough mentors to work with new shooters. A basic pistol course is required to attend the shooting portion. Exceptions need to be discussed with Darla.

Maximum Protection From Foam Earplugs
In order to get the most attenuation from foam ear plugs they must be properly inserted into your ear canals. The foam ear plug when inserted properly offers better sound attenuation than the majority of ear muffs available today. Of course you also have the option of wearing both the foam and ear muffs for maximum protection.
Before I discuss the proper placement of the foam ear plugs I want to point out the fact that your comfort is the best indication of proper protection. If you are in a noisy environment of any kind and the noise bothers you in any way, LEAVE the area and adjust your hearing protection. Either check and correct the fit of the foam earplugs or change the type or amount of protection before you return to the noisy area.
Proper Technique:
Roll the earplug up into a small, thin "snake" with your fingers. You can use one or both hands.
- Pull the top of your ear up and back with your opposite hand to straighten out your ear canal. The rolled-up earplug should slide right in.
- Hold the earplug in with your finger until it expands to fill the ear canal.

Draw From Holster and Rapid Fire Opportunity
The sessions are the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month from 9am to 11am. We provide a dedicated staff member (RSO) to start. If the demand grows we will extend the opportunities.
 So this is how it works. The time allotted will be between 0900 and 1100. Because we bring in a staff person during non operational hours the doors open at 0850 and are locked at 0900. No one is admitted after 0900.The shooting is FREE to members and non-members are charged $5.00 cash only as the registers will not be open.
If you've taken Def HG 2 or higher here
at Center Target Sports and are interested in
an open shooting session to practice those skills this is the perfect opportunity to participate in this fun activity.
Shooters are reminded that CTS will not be providing any instruction during this activity and this is why all participants must be vetted by their completion of Def HG II.

Gunsmith Corner
So the holiday season and winter is upon us. It's time to put away the hunting gear and drag out the lights to decorate the house. WAIT!!! Did you just throw your hunting rifle in the closet with it still in the case from hunting camp? Do you know what the moisture and accumulated crud from your hunting adventures can do to that rifle which served you so well?
Had you had a couple misfires or a screw that seemed loose or was missing? Did you notice that little detail that you told yourself you'd remember to get fixed before next year?
Well the time to have those things done and get that rifle ready for storage is now. I have seen far too many rifles come in with rust and old sludge making them virtually inoperable, just days before hunting season with little to no chance of it getting finished by opening day. Get that new better scope you had been wanting and bring the rifle in during the off season for installation and sight in. I'm not saying that I'm less busy this time of year but I am saying that it's less likely to be a frustrating wait when the rifle would not be needed.
This is also a good time of year for new stocks or a good bedding job. Very often a good bedding job can improve the inherent accuracy of a rifle. And new shiny wood is always good for some admiring looks at next year's camp. Doing the upgrades in the off season takes the stress out of waiting. So just because this year's hunting is over it doesn't mean it's okay to just toss the guns in the corner and forget then until next September.

Home Defense Shotgun - Dec 7
Have you ever wanted to
incorporate a shotgun in your home defense plan...this is the class for you. This new format is appropriate for people of all ages and physical abilities.
Topics of instruction include shotgun safety and responsibility, recoil control, marksmanship skill development, shooting positions, target engagements, threat assessment, and shotgun modifications/accessories.
In addition to learning the shotguns attributes, this course will teach you the shotgun's limitations. The student will be introduced to Close Range Engagement Techniques (CRET), reality based scenarios, and 360 degree coverage.
A combination of lecture, demonstrations, and live fire exercises will be used to teach the proper deployment of the shotgun from point blank to distances out to 25 yards.
All instruction materials, range time, and targets are provided by Center Target Sports.
- Students must provide the following:
- eye and ear protection
- Semi-auto or pump action shotgun
- Weapons mounted Flashlight(optional)
- 25 rounds of bird shot
- 10 rounds of 00 buckshot (low recoil loads recommended)
- 5 Slug rounds
Basic Carbine - Dec 22
Basic carbine is the class that teaches the proper manipulation and function of the carbine for defense.
This is an 6 hour course limited to 10 students. This course is designed to introduce students to the rifle and develop safe essential rifle skills. You will learn the short and medium range applications which are encountered by Law Enforcement/Military personnel in an urban/rural environment.
This course covers: ammunition selection, ballistics, loading, unloading and malfunctions, positions and aiming, marksmanship fundamentals, cover and concealment.
Refuse to be a Victim

Safety experts agree the single most important step toward ensuring your personal safety is making the conscious decision to Refuse To Be A Victim®. You stand a much better chance of preventing criminal attack if you develop a safety plan before you need it. That is why Center Target Sports is offering the National Rifle Association's Refuse To Be A Victim® crime prevention seminar.
Refuse To Be A Victim® is a four hour crime prevention seminar, designed to provide common sense information geared toward awareness and avoidance of criminal attack. Seminar participants are presented with a variety of common sense crime prevention strategies they may integrate into their daily lives. Participants will better understand criminal thinking and will be provided tips on maximizing home, travel, automobile, telephone, technological, and personal safety. There are no firearms in this class. There are no prerequisites for this class.
Are you a student home for the holidays? Now is the time for this class.
The cost of this course is $20.00 and all the proceeds go to the Post Falls Women's Shelter (OASIS).
Since this class tuition all goes to charity this is the only class CTS offers that does not offer a free retake.
Wilderness 1st Aid - Feb 8 9am-1pm
It's time again for Wilderness First Aid. If you cut firewood, rid
e ATV's, Snowmobiles, hunt, fish or recreate in the wilderness this is the class for you.
In this class
we will discuss wilderness survival and critical first aid techniques.
The class is appropriate for all ages and experience levels. We will also discuss first aid kits and the differences between first aid in your back yard vs. first aid in remote areas.
AR Armorer Course (2 days) - Feb 21-22
If you have ever wanted to learn about the AR weapons system this is the class
 for you! In two days of comprehensive in depth assembly and disassembly every part will be removed and explained.
This class will teach you what you need to know about building and or modifying the AR.
On day one you will build the rifle from parts provided to you in a ziplock bag. That's right... every rifle component will be placed in ziplock bags and you will assemble and function test the rifle.
Over the two day class we will cover assembly/disassembly, function, fit, operation, and troubleshooting just to mention a few topics. Sign up today as this class is limited in size and will sell out.

This Month's Shooting/Safety Tip
This month's message is one of prevention. But prevention in a different manner than you are probably thinking. In the military they have a term called "PMCS" which stands for Preventative Maintenance Checks and Service. This is what the military calls their routine maintenance on their equipment. Yes, it is most often associated with vehicle maintenance but, I have also applied it to my defensive firearms for over 35 years.
 This is always one New Year's resolution that I keep every year. You see, on January 1st each year I take the time to break down every defensive firearm and magazine I own to clean, thoroughly inspect and replace all critical springs.
This is my version of PMCS. I am not as concerned with my training firearms because if they malfunction while shooting on paper, that is much different than a malfunction on the street in a real lethal encounter.
Are all the springs I replace each year necessarily ready for replacement? No, they more than likely have plenty of life left. However, taking the firearms down to the level I do each year allows me to make the spring change at the same time with very little additional effort if any at all.
Like our personal response to an attack can be improved by practice and adequate training exposure to stress, so can our firearms functional performance benefit from an effective maintenance program. To whatever extent you choose to do regular maintenance on your defensive firearms, I urge you to be consistent with the process. That's why I picked January 1st for my PMCS day. I'm home, not too busy with normal day to day activities and it is easy to remember.

I encourage you to read your maintenance manuals and familiarize yourself with the proper techniques necessary to keep you firearms running smoothly
