Happy New Year....

I can't believe it is 2020 already.  We at CTS are  so excited for this new year and what it has to offer.  Given the current political climate, the retail gun business is very soft.  This is a cyclic business and the current retail situation comes as no surprise.  What we are most proud of is that the interest in training continues to grow.  Training is so important and it is what CTS is all about.

We celebrated 15 years in business last month and hosted a members only party, which included a town hall type meeting. I believe everyone had an awesome time.  We offered firearms at special pricing to our members that evening and many of you took advantage.  We so appreciate all of the support this community provides us, Thank You!

We saw the end of the year come with a continued demand for CCW classes and Peggy will begin the seasonal increase in CCW class offerings to meet the increased enrollment demands.  Thank you for your patience with respect to getting into a CCW class. I must say it is very heartwarming to see so many people who realize how comprehensive our CCW classes are and are willing to wait for a class slot.

Next month's FREE Clinic promises to be special. Please don't miss the write up below. As this year progresses we will be introducing some new programs, products and classes in the upcoming months so be sure to read the newsletters as they are the best way to keep informed about the happenings at CTS.

With the political year approaching and recent events in the news, we are keeping a close eye on product availability and our back stock of supplies.  So far we have not experienced any delays in delivery of most of the more popular defensive handguns and ammo. Deb is working hard at staying ahead of the demand and you can be sure we are doing everything we can to have the products in stock that you want.

In our quest to offer the best rental gun selection for you to "Try Before You Buy", we are always adding to our selection.  See below for the latest.  Heard about the Ruger 5.7:  Well we have it and you can shoot it!

Our entire staff joins Peggy and I in wishing you all a very happy, healthy and prosperous New year!

Notes from Peggy:

What a great year this has been!  Thank you to all of you for your patronage and loyalty.  Happy New Year!

P.S. Happy Birthday Ed....Jan 24th!  Welcome to Medicare!    Pbs

A reminder that we short the website spaces in our classes.  If the website says full, please call the range to see if there's one spot available.

Thank you to everyone who continues to donate to the Women's Shelter by bringing in toiletries and old cell phones.  Thank you from all of us.

The question & answer block.

Do you as a customer of CTS have a question we can answer that might also interest others?  Send it to [email protected].  In the subject line type "newsletter question".  We'll answer a question or two in our next newsletter for all to see. (We won't use your name without permission.)

This month's question:

Karen P.  Asked "  I am a bit overweight but I want to carry on my body as I try to avoid a purse as much as possible.  Is a bellyband safe?

Karen, Great question.  A properly sized belly band for the specific firearm you own is very safe.  The key is to be sure the entire trigger area is covered appropriately by the holster.  I carried my backup revolver in a Belly Band holster that I positioned over my bullet proof vest and under my uniform.  It allowed me to access the firearm with either hand.

Some of the Belly Band advantages are listed below:
  • Concealment: Belly Band holsters provide exceptional concealment to your firearm. ...
  • Protects the Weapon: Belly Band holsters are extremely safe for carrying a handgun. ...
  • Fits Most Firearms: These holsters are generally made from elastic neoprene material, which can accommodate handguns of almost any size.

Feb Topic:
Maximum Protection From Foam Earplugs

In order to get the most attenuation from foam ear plugs they must be properly inserted into your ear canals.  The foam ear plug when inserted properly offers better sound attenuation than the majority of ear muffs available today.  Of course you also have the option of wearing both the foam and ear muffs for maximum protection.

Before I discuss the proper placement of the foam ear plugs I want to point out the fact that your comfort is the best indication of proper protection.  If you are in a noisy environment of any kind and the noise bothers you in any way, LEAVE the area and adjust your hearing protection.  Either check and correct the fit of the foam earplugs or change the type or amount of protection before you return to the noisy area.

Proper Technique:

Roll the earplug up into a small, thin "snake" with your fingers. You can use one or both hands.
  1. Pull the top of your ear up and back with your opposite hand to straighten out your ear canal. The rolled-up earplug should slide right in.
  2. Hold the earplug in with your finger until it expands to fill the ear canal.

Draw From Holster and Rapid Fire Opportunity

The sessions are the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month from 9am to 11am. We provide a dedicated staff member (RSO) to start.  If the demand grows we will extend the opportunities.

So this is how it works.  The time allotted will be between 0900 and 1100.  Because we bring in a staff person during non operational hours the doors open at 0850 and are locked at 0900.  No one is admitted after 0900.The shooting is FREE to members and non-members are charged $5.00 cash only as the registers will not be open.

If you've taken Def HG 2 or higher here
firing line
at Center Target Sports and are interested in
an open shooting session to practice those skills this is the perfect opportunity to participate in this fun activity.

Shooters are reminded that CTS will not be providing any instruction during this activity and this is why all participants must be vetted by their completion of Def HG II.

OLD ARMY Coffee - Still   Available at CTS

THERE'S A SIMPLE IDEA BEHIND IT - Supporting Our Veterans

Old Army Coffee is a 100% service-connected disabled Veteran owned small business located in Spokane Valley.  They  create teams by hiring Veterans and getting them back to task with gainful and meaningful employment.

Their coffee roaster is Craves Coffee in Spokane.  They came up with  8 unique blends that are their proprietary recipes.

The owner of Old Army Coffee is Jamie Blackhart, 104th Division Operations Sergeant Major. He will retire from the Army Reserves this December with over 30 years in service. 15+ Active Duty and the rest in the US Army Reserve and Army National Guard.

They want to continue to give back and serve our community and decided that there was a large gap in the market for a positive image and unique themed coffee. Something with artwork that catches the eye of the customer and gets them thinking nostalgically about better times. Fun images of the Greatest Generation and wars we were winning and that made a difference in the world.

Old Army Coffee was born out of honoring the past and serving the future. Everyone, regardless of politics, can remember fondly that period in history and has a grandparent or relative that served.

We support and provide product to Veterans and community Not For Profit organizations.

CTS is proud to support this product and we now have it available for our patrons.  Don't forget to pick up a bag of beans or grounds the next time you visit us.

Gunsmith Corner

Here we are at the end of a year and a decade. My how time flies. My mother postulated that the reason time goes so fast as we get older is that each year is a smaller fraction of a life.  I think that coupled with the idea of needing to get more done in less time explains it rather well.

All this to segue into the changes occurring in the world of firearms.  I have long since given up trying to keep up with changing laws and now try my best to stay abreast of the new technology in the firearms themselves.

More pistol platforms are coming ready for micro reflex sights to be installed. Triggers in striker fired pistols are better than ever from the factory. Better materials and manufacturing are providing better accuracy and dependability. After market add-ons are better than ever. That said please try to understand if I am not familiar with the latest whiz bang thunder thumper from Acme.

As a gunsmith I deal mostly in problem solving. Very often the why of the malfunction in your brand new (??) is a puzzle that I can only solve with the weapon on my bench and most often some research. If you have a problem with a firearm please bring it with you when you come to talk to me. I can tell more by looking at it than I can from what you are telling me. I understand you are doing your best to be accurate but we very often speak different languages. I try to use exact nomenclature when discussing a firearm. It works well with others of my ilk but for the average gun owner it can be confusing and even daunting. So please help me by bringing the firearm in question with you.

I beg your patience when I am not grasping what you are telling me. Please know that in my mind I am trying to visualize the weapon and the malfunction as well as hear and understand what you are saying. As I get older and my ears continue to fail me it gets more difficult. Speak to me boldly. What you are saying is important to me. Most of all when it comes to your firearms, there are no silly questions. I want to be helpful and you can help me in that effort.

Thanks

Clint

This Month's Shooting/Safety Tip

During our member town hall meeting last month the subject of basic shooting skill development came up and I thought this would be an appropriate time to repeat a previous tip on how to diagnose typical shooting errors.

Don't hesitate to call me or ask any of our instructors for clarification of these tips or assistance with your shooting.

Diagnostics To Some Common Shooting Errors

Most of the shooting errors I see at the range are a failure to properly apply the two most important shooting fundamentals: sight alignment and trigger press. However, other factors may also cause a shooter to have problems in properly delivering a shot to the target.  The shooting situations listed below assume that the handgun and ammunition are functioning correctly, that the handgun sights are adjusted properly and that the shooter is right-handed. The shot groups for a left handed shooter will appear on the opposite side from the shot groups as described here.  Here are some possible causes to your misses if you are aiming for the center of the target but, are producing hits in the specific quadrants called out below.

SHOTS in Lower Left Quadrant: This pattern is caused when the shooter jerks the trigger, causing the front-sight to dip low and to the left before the bullet leaves the barrel. To correct this type of error, the trigger must be slowly pressed until the shot fires, being careful while pressing not to disturb the sight alignment and sight-picture.

SHOTS in 9 o'clock position: This pattern is created when the shooter does not properly place the index finger on the trigger. In such cases, the shooter has a tendency to press the trigger at an angle instead of straight to the rear. This improper press causes the muzzle to shift to the left, with the shots striking in the 8:30 to 9:30 zone.

SHOTS in Upper Left Quadrant: This is caused by 'riding the recoil'. This is where the shooter anticipates the recoil and makes the handgun recoil before it really happens. This type of pattern can also be caused by improper follow-through. The shooter releases the trigger finger too soon and may flip the finger forward, causing the front-sight to rise to the left. Errors of this nature will usually produce shots in the 9:30 to 12 o'clock zone.

SHOTS in Upper Right Quadrant:  Here the shooter has 'heeled' the shots high on the target. This error is caused by anticipating the shot and, at the last moment before firing, giving the handgun a slight push with the heel of the hand. The front-sight moves up to the right and the bullets strike the target in the 1 o'clock to 2:30 zone.

SHOTS in the 3 o'clock position: Here the shooter 'thumbs' the handgun. Just as the shot begins, the shooter pushes the right thumb against the side of the frame, causing the aligned sights to move to the right.

SHOTS in the Lower Right Quadrant: This target illustrates what happens when a shooter's grip tightens as the trigger is pressed. This target area is known as the 'lobster' area - just as a lobster's claw clamps together, the shooter's hand clamps or snatches at the last second. This movement causes the front-sight to dip low and to the right, pushing the shots to the 3:30 to 5 o'clock zone.

SHOTS directly below the point of aim:  The shot string in the 5 o'clock to 6:30 area is caused when the shooter 'breaks' the wrist - another form of anticipation. The shooter expects the handgun to recoil at a known instant and tries to fight or control this anticipated recoil by cocking the wrist downward. The shooter may subconsciously believe that the recoil can be lessened by holding the wrist down. This shot group can also be caused by a shooter who relaxes too soon.

SHOTS everywhere - No distinct pattern:  A peppered target is often produced by a beginning shooter. A new shooter usually does not consistently repeat one particular error, but instead commits many different errors. The result is a target with shots scattered in many places. Such a target may be caused by the shooter's inconsistency, including changing the grip between shots, focusing on the target instead of the front-sight on some shots, failing to align the sights properly and so on.
