A Few Thoughts from Ed:

OMG!
I am still recovering from what turned out to be an amazing day.  Eight years ago in my wildest dreams I could not have imagined how well our customer appreciation event would be embraced by the community and how it would grow over the years.

I am very proud of our staff and the work and support they have provided leading up to yesterday.  We had so many vendors who pitched in and donated products and time.  Once again, Ironman Safe Co donated a safe for the Golden Ticket Grand Prize which is always a highlight of the day!

Peggy and I especially want to thank Deb who after a few days to enjoy the results of this year will begin to  plan next year's event.  As you read the numbers below read them with a sense of pride because you made all of this happen.  I get so frustrated when so much of what we hear about the firearms community is negative.  T he true essence of the firearms enthusiast  impacted our local community in a very big way on  Saturday.  We at CTS can never thank you enough for what an amazing blessing you have given us all.  Thank You So Much.

Notes from Peggy:
Thank you to everyone who donated and participated in our Customer Appreciation Event...we couldn't do what we do without you!  A special thank you to our volunteers, Bernie, Bob, Karen, John P, John J, Amber, Missy, Jeremy, Georgie, Luanne, Cathy, Karen, Debi, Helen, Leslie, Erik, Josie, and Brad.

We also want to thank all of our vendors who so generously donated to our event with their time and prizes.

Remember that we have special rates at the Holiday Inn Express-CDA if you are coming in for classes or have visitors this summer...ask for the Center Target rate!

A reminder that we short the website spaces in our classes.  If the website says full, please call the range to see if there's one spot available.

Thank you to everyone who continues to donate to the Women's Shelter by bringing in toiletries and old cell phones.  Thank you from all of us.

John Farnam Is Returning to CTS

November 22, 23rd and 24th john farnam

There have been a handful of instructors in the gun culture whom have made a dramatic impact on realistic defensive firearms training.  The greats like Rex Applegate, Col. Cooper,  Ray Chapman, Massad Ayoob, John Farnam, have long left their mark on realistic defensive use of the handgun.  These men have always been focused on the student and the realistic principles of ones defense.

Many of the instructor who travel the country today offering the latest and greatest are actually teaching techniques and tactics developed by these men 50 years ago in some cases.  The reality is the basic firearm fundamentals and the foundational manipulations associated with the fundamental application of the handgun have not changed much over the years.

I would highly recommend you take the time to experience the instruction of John Farnam.  He has been a mentor of mine for many years.  I am proud to call him my friend and encourage all students who are serious about quality realistic self defense techniques with a firearm to see for yourself when John is here.  This class will start on Friday evening and then continue all day Saturday and Sunday.

On a side note:  We do not profit from John's class.  You pay him directly all the money stays with him.  This is obviously a class that does not fall under our repeat for free policy.

You can register for John's class on his website:     defense-training.com

Consignment Corner

Welcome to the consignment corner.  Remember many of the consignment guns have additional accessories.

We are unable to display or list many of the accessories that are often included with our consignment guns.   Items such as extra magazine (sometime 7 or 8 extra mags) holsters, tools, storage containers, ammunition, etc.

All of these extras add up to the overall value of the sale.  Imagine buying a $500.00 handgun that also has with it six $60.00 mags, that's quite a savings all for $500.00.

ASK THE STAFF ABOUT EXTRAS

We have a great selection of Consignment Long Guns at this time.  Too many to list individually.  Please see the picture below:

We have developed such a great reputation with respect to our consignment firearms that many of you come in and ask about our stock every week.

  If you're interested, don't wait!

Intro to Carbine - Aug 25

ar onehand This is a class designed with the new carbine shooter in mind.  It is as advertised an intro class.

Under our old format our basic carbine class often had students that had never even loaded an AR magazine let alone fired a shot.  This required us to spend more time in the class room than was ideal and it also slowed our progress when we began shooting.

The perfect solution is to offer those true beginners an opportunity to get a good understanding of this very popular weapons system.  The fundamentals of the AR are covered in detail and will allow the students to transition into the basic course with ease.

In addition, the basic course is now a 6 hour course with very little classroom and much more shooting time on the range

Basic Carbine scheduled Sept 15

Basic carbine is the class that teaches the proper manipulation and function of the carbine for defense.  This is a 6 hour course limited to 10 students. This course is designed to introduce students to the rifle and develop safe essential rifle skills. You will learn the short and medium range applications which are encountered by Law Enforcement/Military personnel in an urban/rural environment.

This course covers: ammunition selection, ballistics, loading, unloading and malfunctions, positions and aiming, marksmanship fundamentals, cover and concealment.

This Month's Shooting/Safety Tip

With Clint our gunsmith still recovering from his motorcycle crash I have been fielding a number of questions about cleaning techniques or tips.  Below I have tried to list a few tips and considerations beyond the actual cleaning procedure that you might find helpful.  Remember to follow the cleaning procedures listed in your operators manual for best results.

Salt water or marine environments are environments where cleaning and maintenance is even more important. Salt water will reek havoc on a gun if left alone. Needless to say, anytime your gun gets dunked, in fresh or salt water, you need to completely disassemble it and make sure the parts are clean and dry. If your gun goes into salt water, make sure to put it in fresh water as soon as possible to stop the corroding power of the salt water. Gun Scrubber will also displace moisture on a temporary basis. Ultrasonic cleaning and the ultrasonic lube solution can be a huge benefit in these situations.

Tips and Tricks

Improvise can often be the word of the day. Household items as well as tools from the gun industry can make the task of cleaning or maintenance much easier. There are many little spots that are hard to get at that accumulate grime.

Q-Tips or Cotton Swabs

I have found these are lifesavers when getting into nooks and crannies of the underside of a slide, or inside the frame. They are a must have in any gun cleaning kit. I just buy the biggest, cheapest packs I can find. Using these cotton swabs, I can get into places more thoroughly than I would have been able to, unless I'd completely disassembled the gun.

Pipe cleaners

You can find these in the craft department at Wal-Mart. They are great to slide between close machined surfaces that are hard to get a patch or cloth into. Some meticulous cleaning may seem like overkill, but it is really up to you how clean you want to get your own guns.

Silicone/Rem-Oil cloths

These cloths are fantastic tools to a wipe down guns you've handled. They can clean off any oils from your hands that may cause rust. That's especially true for those older style blued guns. They can mean the difference between a gun that looks like it did when you bought it for the rest of your life, and one that has round rust marks in the design of your fingerprints.

Hoppe's Bore Snake

The Hoppe's Bore Snake is one of my favorite tricks of the trade. I have one for all my calibers, and they make cleaning much easier. I scrub down the bore with a good solvent and then run the snake through. 99% of the time I have a gleaming clean bore. For those times it isn't quite enough, I just repeat the process. These remove the need for patches, and can be reused for years with or without dipping them in Hoppe's #9 (but I have to admit I'm a dipper).

Tooth Brushes

Never again let a family member throw away an old toothbrush. Always ask the dentist for a new brush at every dental appointment. Toothbrushes are pretty good to get the slots and grooves clean inside the slide of an auto, but they tend to not be tough enough. Companies like Otis make all types of gun cleaning brushes in various bristle types. Copper and nylon are good for the specific applications and they are relatively inexpensive. It never hurts to have a toothbrush on hand though.

Spray Solvents

The most important consideration here is to use gun specific products. We have patrons of CTS that use unleaded gas, break cleaner, etc... DO NOT do this. Gun specific cleaners are far less caustic than brake cleaner, but spray into those hard to reach places and clear out grime like it was nothing. Just re-oil and you're in business. These can, however, remove paint, as well as some wood and metal finishes, so be careful. Newer versions are even safe for polymer framed guns as well. This alone has saved me countless hours of cleanup when dealing with the underside of the slide, or inside my 1911 frames.

Side Note: We have transitioned most of our cleaning products to the ProShot line. They are worthy of your consideration.

Dental & Electronics Pics/Tools

Another reason to be friends with your dentist. I have used these tools for years. They give us the best ability to get to little areas to remove caked on or stubborn grit, even rust, that has accumulated. You can find these at Harbor Freight or at Radio Shack. Be careful with any steel tools...they can easily scratch off your finish. I use pics wrapped in a cleaning patch doused in Hoppe's #9 to get into the small crevices.

It is Work!

A firearm is a significant investment, and unlike many of the other big ticket purchases in our life, like cars, stoves, cameras, TVs, they almost never end up going to the dump or junkyard when you decide you want a different one. Guns are the ultimate "durable consumer good." They almost never get thrown away, and they are seldom worth less than 25% less than you paid for them. Often they are worth several times more later in life. If you take care of your guns, they will take care of you, whether it be protecting your life, service in the field, sport, or as your own little retirement account locked in your gun safe. By keeping them clean and making sure that no hidden rust or corrosion is creeping in, you will keep them in service for a lifetime, and possibly several lifetimes.
