A Few Thoughts from Ed:
ed pic

Wow....August 1st and the demand for firearms, ammo and classes has never been greater. Ranges and gun stores across the country are struggling to keep up with the demand. Deb has done an amazing job keeping us in guns and ammo. Peggy has been able to fit additional classes in every possible opening in our schedule. I can't say enough about our instructors. They have all stepped up to cover the most intense class schedule we have ever offered in 15 plus years. We have never filled October classes in July and August before.

As a result of the tremendous demand for product, we have experienced unrealistic increases in our costs for ammo and some accessories. As an example, four weeks ago we purchased 9mm 115Grn range ammo for $4.20 per box of 50 less than the order we placed last Friday. No matter how you try and justify that increase...you can't. I cannot believe the cost to produce that ammo could have increased that much at the manufacturing plant. But, none the less, that is the increase that was passed along to us. We are committed to manage our pricing to you as best we can. We will never raise our prices just because there is an increased demand.

We are so grateful to all of you for your continued support. We have just completed our Advanced Carbine and Scoped Rifle classes which we teach at the Fernan Rod and Gun Club outdoor range. We are so lucky to have such a quality outdoor facility in our area. Please support their programs whenever possible.

Be Safe...Ed

Notes from Peggy:

If you've been trying to call CTS you'll notice that more times than not you're getting our voicemail.  As important as phones are, we believe that those customers that come to our facility deserve to be waited on first.  We work really hard to get your calls answered as soon as we can.  Thank you for understanding that we are busy, busy, busy. Also thanks to all of you for your loyalty and patience.  We've hired extra employees to ease the wait.

If you've been waiting for the Home Defense shotgun class...it's on the calendar.  Thanks for your patience.

Thank you to all our loyal and new customers for helping us get through this pandemic.  We are still working hard to continue to make our business safe for everyone.  We appreciate all of your patience and compliance.

We Will Have A Different Look This Year

URGENT PLEA...
We Desperately Need Advance Sign-ups - Please click on the link below to make an advanced appointment to donate blood!

Vitalant is testing all blood donations for COVID-10 antibodies.
Antibodies are proteins that help fight off infections. Because antibodies are part of the body's immune response and not the virus itself, antibody testing cannot be used to diagnose current coronavirus infection. Donors cannot donate-and get tested for COVID-19 antibodies-if they are sick. Donors must have a successful donation to get the antibody test. The test is not available to donors with incomplete donations and non-donors.

VITALANT BLOOD BANK
Now is the time for the Shooting Community to come together and help us support this very important community service by giving blood.  At our request this year the blood center will be sending Two fully manned blood mobiles and will be on site for a full 5 1/2 hrs.
blood
This is a critical time for the blood center and they desperately need our support.  I told the blood coordinator that we (the shooting community) would surprise them with our support.  Please help this prediction become a reality by signing up on line.  Just click below:

The Vitalant Blood Bank is now taking appointment reservations online.  Please schedule your appointment ASAP. Click here:

POST FALLS FOOD BANK

Our Post Falls Food Bank is in need of donations.

We know this is a crazy time in the world and in our community. But, so many are in need of help this year.  Even though we're downsizing our event this year due to social distancing guidelines, we're hoping our community will still step up this year to help those in need. Our firearms community has been so giving and generous every year, we're trying to do it again this year.

The Food Bank is in particular need of the below listed items.  Of course they will take any food items, but these items are at critical shortage levels.  Help us help the less fortunate by bringing items for our bins.

  • Peanut Butter
  • Chili
  • Canned Corn
  • Baked Beans
  • Syrup
  • Jelly
  • Cooking Oil
  • Coffee
  • Spaghetti Sauce
  • Canned green beans
  • Soup (chunky, vegetable and chicken)
Reminder: The food bank cannot take expired food or opened items.

Peggy will be in the parking lot from 9am-2pm accepting donations with heartfelt thanks and a free gift while supplies last.

TOYS FOR TOTS

We all think of Toys for Tots around the Christmas season but how great would it be if we could help our Marine friends get a head start on toy collections.  Not only will you be helping a local child this holiday season but for every toy you donate you will receive a chance to win one of the new firearms we are giving away.
  toys
If you bring a toy, it needs to be new.  Now is a perfect time to buy crayons, coloring books, colored pencils and glue with all the back to school specials going on.  Also don't forget the dollar store!

A Note On Classes:

If you have recently tried to register for a class, you quickly found out that just about every class we are offering between now and the end of September is full.  A quick look at the schedule shows that we are also offering more classes per month than we have ever done.  We have squeezed into the schedule every class we can.  In addition to the available days for classes we must also be concerned about the welfare of our instructors.

Our instructors are teaching many more classes than normal and it is of critical importance that we keep them fresh and well rested.  We are so blessed and fortunate to have the in-house grown instructors that we have.  Not burning them out is a critical concern for us here at CTS.  I want to thank all of you for your patience.  I promise you that when you get into a class with one of our instructors you will recognize the experience was worth the wait.

Consignment Corner

Welcome to the consignment corner.  Remember many of the consignment guns have additional accessories.

We are unable to display or list many of the accessories that are often included with our consignment guns.   Items such as extra magazine (sometime 7 or 8 extra mags) holsters, tools, storage containers, ammunition, etc.

All of these extras add up to the overall value of the sale.  Imagine buying a $500.00 handgun that also has with it six $60.00 mags, that's quite a savings all for $500.00.

It's costs $7 to shoot for the evening and you need 65 rounds of ammunition. The second and fourth Thursday of each month, we shoot the national match course at 50 feet. The third and fifth Thursday of each month, we shoot at 75 feet. The first Thursday of each month, we have a fun shoot. On even-numbered months, we shoot a Centerfire pistol at 50 feet using the 75 foot Target. Makes for some really interesting competition. On the first Thursday of odd numbered months, we shoot the Jack McElroy Bastard Aggregate. For this competition we shoot 30 rounds of rimfire and 30 rounds of centerfire at 75 ft.  We then add both scores together for a possible 600 point match.  So please come join us for some great competition and camaraderie. We love to have new shooters join our group and hope to see you there.

Everyone is welcome to attend the educational portion of the meeting from 5-6, however due to the growing number of ladies attending, we do not have enough mentors to work with new shooters. A basic pistol course is required to attend the shooting portion.  Exceptions need to be discussed with Darla.

Aug topic:  No class portion tonight. We will be shooting in the range to get some extra practice in. (Bring snap caps and extra ammo)

 Sept:  No meeting this month

Terminal Ballistics - Aug 30

If we piqued your interest about gunshot trauma in our CCW or defensive classes, you won't want to miss the "how the trauma is caused" class we call Terminal Ballistics.

This is the class that will put to rest all the myths of stopping power, knockdown power and dispel much of what we see on TV and in the movies.
This class is based on fact and science as well as testing by men and woman a lot smarter than me. However, I have studied terminal ballistics for over 30 years and have been fortunate enough to surround myself with people who live this terminal ballistic life as a profession. This is a class you will not want to miss.

Cane Defense - Aug 18

It is time again for another Cane defense class.

This is a great class for anyone who wants to learn about the many benefits of a cane for personal defense.  This medical device has many features that can come in handy even in traditional non-permissive environments.

This class is appropriate to all  ages, genders and physical capabilities.  This is not a martial arts class.
This is a class that offers techniques and skill sets that can be quickly learned and applied.

Low Light Shooting Techniques - Sept 13

Experience the most comprehensive and innovative Low-Light training. Through our innovative training systems you will learn to dominate your suspect and your environment.
  low-light
This one day course provides the student with the training to effectively control their environment and suspect with light. Students learn how light affects the eye and are taught to use light to gain and maintain the advantage in low-light encounters.

Classroom instruction and live fire exercises are used to insure the student's understanding of the skills necessary to survive and thrive in a low-light environment.

This seldom offered class is one that you don't want to miss.  The content parallels the course Ed teaches to law enforcement across the country.  It involves shooting at various levels of light and the use of multiple flashlight techniques.

Home Defense Shotgun - Sept 20 & Oct 5

If you incorporate a shotgun in your home defense plan...this is the class for you.  This new format is appropriate for people of all ages and physical abilities.
Topics of instruction include shotgun safety and responsibility, recoil control, marksmanship skill development, shooting positions, target engagements, threat assessment, and shotgun modifications/accessories. woman shotgun

In addition to learning the shotguns attributes, this course will teach you the shotgun's limitations. The student will be introduced to Close Range Engagement Techniques (CRET), reality based scenarios, and 360 degree coverage.

A combination of lecture, demonstrations, and live fire exercises will be used to teach the proper deployment of the shotgun from point blank to distances out to 25 yards.
All instruction materials, range time, and targets are provided by Center Target Sports.

Students must provide the following:

Eye and ear protection
Semi-auto or pump action shotgun
Weapons mounted Flashlight(optional)
25 rounds of birdshot
10 rounds of 00 buckshot (low recoil loads recommended)

5 Slug rounds

Less Lethal Practice Session - Aug 25

This Month's Shooting/Safety Tip

Winning in Low-Light takes more than Fancy Toys...

Recently there seems to be more and more written, discussed and even advertised about working under low-light conditions.  Maybe I am just more sensitive to these issues, as this is a subject that I am passionate about and compelled to learn more about.  Through research, experimentation and clinical study I am constantly looking for answers.

My purpose in this article pertains to how I believe you can immediately impact your low-light survivability. Sadly, many firearms instructors spend most of their time teaching the popular flashlight techniques that have been around forever.  That's OK to a point.   Flashlight techniques are important and they need to be understood.  However, there is more to operating in the night than knowing how to hold a flashlight.

Develop an Understanding
jim
I believe you need to develop greater understanding of the physiological and psychological aspects you will encounter while under stress in the dark.  A comprehensive understanding of these factors will allow you to select and train in the techniques that work for your particular environment and personal limitations or capabilities.  You need to understand that these are factors that affect everyone who operates in a low-light environment good guys and bad guys alike.  Developing the knowledge, tools, tactics, and techniques to "Rule the Night" and not merely exist in it could save your life.

A great place to start to improve your low-light survivability is by studying the Human Eye Physiology, Affects of Body Alarm Response (BAR) in the dark, and the low-light skills of Visual Patience, and don't overlook the importance of using  your Light Source as a Control Device.

Physiology

At a minimum, learn the function of the Rods and Cones.  Understand how the Cones during day time, provide us with color and detail.  In the dark the Rods take over and allow us to see movement rather than fine detail.  Knowing where the Rods and Cones are located will reinforce why off-center viewing is so critical at night. Did you know that the amount of light we need to see at night doubles every 13 years?

Psychological

We need to understand that in reduced light, our mind will try to fill in what our eyes can't see.  This becomes even more difficult to manage under stressful conditions.  We have all heard instructors talk about Fight or Flight Response.  Lately we are hearing the term Body Alarm Response (BAR) in the place of Flight or Flight.  The BAR is the body's response to the high stress of a life threatening attack situation.  Add the psychological & physiological changes that are magnified by the lack of light and the Low-Light BAR can be the most severe you will ever experience.

"Tunnel Vision" or "Perceptual Narrowing" can be explained by the physiological and psychological changes that accompany the BAR.  As humans we have an innate tendency to narrow attention upon a threat during extreme stress.

Visual Patience

Visual patience is a term I use to describe the act of leaving your light on long enough to identify what you are looking at.  Emotions of the fight and visual patience are often mixed or confused when we attempt to analyze the high stress environment of a gun fight.

Control with Light

I believe here is where you can tremendously improve your ability to win at night.  You should learn to use light to control the bad guy.  How do you use light as a force option?  I bet I've got you wondering now.  Place the hot spot of your light in your opponent's eyes, you reduce his ability to see you clearly and mount any type of attack as you approach.  He is unable to assess your physical conditioning, your size, determine if you are alone, look for an escape route, or look for cover, just to mention a few advantages.

If you have a quality light source, and you know how to use it, you can gain the advantages as stated above every time you confront a suspect in a diminished light environment.
I believe the single most important thing you can do to improve your survivability is to improve your understanding operating in the low-light environment.  Never before, have we had the tools, access to the knowledge and clinical research available to us to truly "Rule the Night".
