A Few Thoughts from Ed:
ed pic

Slowly but surely we are working our way back to what some may call the "new Normal". What that will look like remains to be seen.   We continue to monitor the guidelines as recommended by our health professionals and we continue our enhanced cleaning procedures. I must admit, it sure is nice to hear the shots again being released at the range.

The last few months have been full of planning, modifying, and evaluating decisions that have an immediate and long lasting impact on our business and our community. By far the most difficult decision we have had to make is to drastically scale back our Annual August Customer Appreciation Day.

Yes, year after year we have accomplished so much with this event but not without months of preparation, planning and support from numerous sources. We have waited until the last minute to make the final decision to cancel until next year. Some of our vendors who normally help us out with this event are unable to participate and the limited availability of firearms and related products have all impacted our decision.

Peggy and I and our entire team at CTS remain committed to supporting the three charities and our customers. On August  8th we are planning to setup trailers with containers for food donations and toys and we hope our customers will continue to show their support for the Post Falls Food Bank, Toys for Tots, and the Blood Bank. The Blood mobiles have committed to setting up on Aug 8th also.  We will be scheduling appointments for those of you willing to donate through CTS once again. It is our hope that our firearms community, which  year after year has been so generous will continue to give this year even without the possibility of winning a prize.  Many of those who have given in the past will be in need this year, so if you're one of the blessed ones...please help us support our community.  Peggy and I will also be doing our part by making a financial donation to the food bank in an amount equal to the thousands of dollars we spend advertising our community event each year.

Although we will be operating this year's event in a scaled back format we promise to come back in 2021 even bigger and better than ever.

We are still finalizing our plans and will keep everyone informed as we progress. Thank you for understanding and continuing to support our efforts to prove how important and giving the firearm enthusiasts are to this community.

On another note, this summer (June, July and August) we will be offering a special thank you.   Starting today we will honor all Teachers with Teacher Tuesday- all teachers shoot free on Tuesday with proper ID.  Health Care Wednesday - All health care workers shoot free on Wednesday with proper ID, and First Responder Friday - All first responders shoot free on Friday with proper ID.

Be Safe...Ed

Notes from Peggy:

Thank you to all our loyal and new customers for helping us get through this pandemic.  We are still working hard to continue to make our business safe for everyone.  We appreciate all of your patience and compliance.

Please, if you're sick or have been around sick people, don't come in our building and expose our employees.  They are here to help you and we want to keep them safe and healthy so we can stay open!

If you're waiting for Handgun Familiarity class to resume and it's your intent to learn to shoot...skip it and go directly to Basic Pistol.  Everything in HG Fam is covered in the Basic Pistol class AND you get 3-4 hours of shooting time!

Both Advanced Carbine and Precision Scoped Rifle are on the website for sign-up now.

The only classes that will be taught in June are ID Enhanced CCW, Basic Pistol, Basic Pistol 2 and Church Security Tactics.  If you were signed up for one of these classes and it was postponed due to the stay at home order, please call the range to reschedule.  Any classes paid for will be held on account and you will be placed into the next class of your choosing.

Center Target Customer Service
A Top Priority!

We are not perfect but we try hard.  Since the COVID crisis we have been working with a reduced staff because of a few "High Risk Employees" and we have had to modify our hours.  We were designated at the federal and local level as an essential business during the pandemic.

As many of you know during this period the industry has experienced an unprecendented demand for our products and services.  At CTS, like many in our business, we set all time new records for daily firearm and ammo sales.  This is all good and as a business owner I am exrtremely grateful.

But I do realize that all this activity and demand for product has often resulted in long lines as reduced staff tried to service increased crowds.  Too make matters worse shipping time and product availability were all working against our best efforts.

It is extremely important to me that we try hard to provide the best service we can and I realize that sometimes we fall short.  I want you all to know that we appreciate your understanding and know that if we fail to offer a smiile or do not answer the phone in a timely manner we appologize and hope you know that we continue to strive to be better.

I am extremely proud of our team here at CTS.  I can say without question that their hearts and intentions are in the best place but we are all human and sometinmes, not as perfect as we wish we could be.

Thanks again for your patience and understanding.

Consignment Corner

Welcome to the consignment corner.  Remember many of the consignment guns have additional accessories.

We are unable to display or list many of the accessories that are often included with our consignment guns.   Items such as extra magazine (sometime 7 or 8 extra mags) holsters, tools, storage containers, ammunition, etc.

All of these extras add up to the overall value of the sale.  Imagine buying a $500.00 handgun that also has with it six $60.00 mags, that's quite a savings all for $500.00.

Bullseye League meets every Thursday at 4:45 and  6 pm.    If anyone is interested in shooting Bullseye, we would be happy to have you join our league. It's costs  $7 to shoot for the evening and you need 65 rounds of ammunition. The second and fourth Thursday of each month, we shoot the national match course at 50 feet. The third and fifth Thursday of each month, we shoot at 75 feet. The first Thursday of each month, we have a fun shoot. On even-numbered months, we shoot a Centerfire pistol at 50 feet using the 75 foot Target. Makes for some really interesting competition. On the first Thursday of odd numbered months, we shoot the Jack McElroy Bastard Aggregate. For this competition we shoot 30 rounds of rimfire and 30 rounds of centerfire at 75 ft.  We then add both scores together for a possible 600 point match.  So please come join us for some great competition and camaraderie. We love to have new shooters join our group and hope to see you there.

IDPA meets the 1st and 2nd Sunday of every month from 7:30-11am.  Everyone's welcome.  Come watch and learn or participate.  Newcomers always welcome. $10

Everyone is welcome to attend the educational portion of the meeting from 5-6, however due to the growing number of ladies attending, we do not have enough mentors to work with new shooters. A basic pistol course is required to attend the shooting portion.  Exceptions need to be discussed with Darla.

Jun: MantisX is the greatest product I know for both dry fire and live fire analysis. We will have the rep here to demonstrate and allow us to practice using the product.

New Divison for GSSF

A reminder that the "make-up" session for the postponed April match is June 6th with the 3rd session back on our regular 3rd Sat of the month...June 20!

As many of you are aware, Glock introduced the G44 their .22lr in January.   So, how does this new model fit in with the monthly sessions?

There will be a new division for Rimfire and only one plaque will be provided. Anyone shooting the G44 will be able to compete and earn the 500 patch for a perfect score. Only stock G44's will be allowed to participate in the matches and any modified models will be unable to shoot them in the competition. So you now know that there will be a Stock Rimfire division and it will shoot the same course of fire as the other stock models. Yes, you get to shoot at the 75 foot targets that you all love with your G44, and I know you are all happy about that (he says with a smile on his face, or maybe it is an evil little grin).

We know those of you who have the G44 are practicing and excited to start using them in competition, so it is coming soon. I look forward to seeing who will be the first 500 shooter.

Gunsmith Corner

Perhaps it is the nature of my work that draws me to wax nostalgic from time to time. It may also be that I was raised by and among men who were veterans and staunch patriots and who hunted. Some were democrats and others were republicans.

The point is that while they were solid in their beliefs they were friends and concentrated on their similarities. They taught me to stand firm but never to close my mind to new information. Above that they taught me to take pride in my work whether I was riding line on a cattle ranch or working as an iron worker. These lessons were not often told to me, they were set by example. These men taught me honor, integrity, honesty and spirituality.

As a gunsmith I strive to always be honest and open with the people I serve. It is not a pleasant job to explain to a shooter that more often than not issues with the way a pistol cycles are related to the user interface. On the other hand I have the privilege of restoring family heir looms to a shoot-able state or prepping them for status as a wall hanger. I treat both these tasks with the same dedication to my craft. I think of myself as a craftsman in service to the public more than working for wages. Not that income isn't important, it truly is. It is not however my primary reason for the work. I am driven by the challenges, puzzlements, and satisfaction of seeing smiles on the faces of my customers. To be "the gunsmith" at Center Target Sports is an honor and responsibility that I never take lightly.

These last few months have seen my work load increase considerably and wait times have increased correspondingly. I apologize for the delays, yet add this caveat. I work as fast as I can while maintaining a level of craftsmanship that will make us all happy at the end of the day. I believe that an extra day or two is worth better than average work and certain safety above all. I thank you for your patience and understanding.

Enjoy the summer. Come see me. Be happy. We live in the best place on earth.

Clint

This Month's Shooting/Safety Tip

Criminals Use Intimidation

These are unusual time we are living...To say the least.   More people are out of work or feeling emotional stress like never before and for some people desperation may result in behavior contrary to the norm.  I believe the potential to become a victim of crime may be on the rise.  I am not motivated by paranoia but by a need to be prepared.  Often time a feeling of helplessness drives an individual to gain power through the intimidation of others.  It is an accepted belief that the crime of rape is actually an "act of aggression and violence, motivated primarily by power or anger, rather than by sexuality."

We are now beginning to recognize that most street crimes are also driven by the pursuit of power. All of us seek power in one form or another. The problem is, power can be used responsibly or irresponsibly. Criminals crave power and will do virtually anything to have it. They believe other people and their property exists for their benefit. The guy who today sticks a knife in your face and demands money is the same guy that stole your milk, or lunch money back in grade school. Most crimes of violence are crimes of opportunity. I want you to limit those opportunities.

Criminals use weapons of many forms.

He will often use deception to catch people off guard. His secrecy gives him a great advantage and provides him a sense of power. Intimidation is another often used weapon by the criminal. His domineering manner may be so menacing that he need never utter a threat, raise his voice, or clench his fist. Other times, a display of anger accomplishes his purpose. The outburst is usually carefully orchestrated, expertly timed and displayed dramatically.
The criminal wants to dominate his victim and will often resort to violence as a last resort. His self-image is at stake. He expects you to comply with his commands. So, he gives you an order (give me your wallet) and he expects and waits for you to comply. If he wanted to hurt you, he would simply walk up to you and attack you without warning. But this is typically not what happens.

Raise Your Level of Awareness!

I believe that raising your level of awareness is the single most effective way to keep yourself and those around you safe. Col. Jeff Cooper developed the Combat Mind set Color Code System. Although others have added colors and applied additional theories to Col. Cooper's original 4 color format, I believe in keeping it simple. If four colors were good enough for Cooper, they are good enough for me. Take a second to note the colors and associated mind set listed below.
  • White - Unaware and unprepared
  • Yellow - Relaxed alert. No specific threat situation
  • Orange - Specific alert. Something is not quite right and has gotten your attention
  • Red - Fight Mode. Your mental trigger has been tripped (established back in Condition Orange). You take appropriate action.
Ideally, you should go about your day in Condition Yellow. Being alert gives you the edge. As we have said time after time, "Action beats Reaction every time". I don't care how fast you are with whatever weapon system you choose. If your first indication you are in trouble is the contact with the criminal on his terms, you have an uphill battle ahead.

Learn and train yourself to trust your instincts.

If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Don't blow it off. Remember the story I have told in the past of a CTS student and his girlfriend who were confronted by 3 knife wielding would be robbers in Spokane Valley. As he explained the incident to Peggy and I, he credited his heightened state of awareness that allowed him to get his semiautomatic CCW out of the holster and into the situation without having to fire a shot, directly attributed to the class he took at Center Target. His ability to recognize the situation they were in kept them from being robbed or worse.

When you observe criminal behavior or a perceived threat, get away if you can. If that doesn't work and you are victimized, a plan of action and speed in execution may be your salvation. When he says "This is a stick up" he must wait for you to comply. It is during this critical time that you must act. If you are going to run, run. If you are willing and able to fight, fight and WIN....
