Center Target's Indoor Shooting Bays are open! We will be disinfecting the shooting stalls frequently and are strictly enforcing a 2 person per lane rule.  If there are more than 2 in your group, we will give you another lane or ask that the "extras" wait in the retail area until it's their turn to shoot.

The only classes that will be taught in May and June are ID Enhanced CCW, Basic Pistol, Basic Pistol 2 and Church Security Tactics.  If you were signed up for one of these classes and it was postponed due to the stay at home order, please call the range to reschedule.  Any classes paid for will be held on account and you will be placed into the next class of your choosing. All other classes will resume in July.

A Few Thoughts from Ed:

What interesting times we are living in. Our entire team at CTS hope this newsletter finds you all healthy and safe. We are doing our best to get back to normal but will continue our efforts with modified hours and class offerings for the time being.

I am so looking forward to getting back in the classroom. This break in classes is the longest break from teaching I have had in 15 years. Wow, do I miss it.   I am so appreciative of everyone's patience as we get the classes re-scheduled and filled. Our decision to postpone the classes affected more than 400 scheduled students. You guys are awesome and your cooperation has allowed this process to progress relatively smoothly.

Over the last few weeks we have been painting, repairing and replacing items that needed attention. We will continue to update the facility over the next month or so.

The shooting industry Nationwide saw a huge increase in gun sales during the initial stages of the COVID situation, and we were no exception. We sold firearms to a very large number of first time firearm buyers. It is always a positive situation to see the firearms community grow with responsible new firearm ownership. However, I realize that there are a number of first time firearm owners who might not feel comfortable or fully understand all the issues pertaining to firearm ownership safety. I want to remind all that purchased firearms from us to take advantage of the FREE owner orientation session that is included with every firearm sold at CTS.

Our first FREE clinic (when we are again allowed to gather) will also address the ownership and safety issues pertaining to firearms. This FREE clinic will of course be open to all firearms owners regardless if you purchased the firearm from CTS or not.

This month's tip will be a re-print from a previous newsletter as it pertains to dry fire practice. I know with limited shooting opportunities over the last few weeks many people have been doing more dry fire practice. However, as a result of recent conversations with some of you I believe dry fire benefits and methodology need to be better understood. I hope this month's tip helps you dry fire practice more efficiently.

All that being said, if you or someone you know became a first-time gun owner recently, or if you'd like to improve the skills you already have, please take advantage of our modified training courses currently offered at our range!

Please stay healthy and let's put this all behind us as soon as possible.

One more thought.  As you all know we live in an amazing country and community.  Through our system of government and election system we are able to elect some phenomenal leaders.  In our community we are no exception and what better example could we have than Post Falls Mayor, the Honorable Ron Jacobson.  He recently posted and open letter on his face book page and he was gracious enough to allow us to reprint it.  Please see the below message from our mayor.  Thank you Ron.

Be Safe,,,Ed

Notes from Peggy:

Please, if you're sick or have been around sick people, don't come in our building and expose our employees.  They are here to help you and we want to keep them safe and healthy so we can stay open!

If you're waiting for Handgun Familiarity class to resume and it's your intent to learn to shoot...skip it and go directly to Basic Pistol.  Everything in HG Fam is covered in the Basic Pistol class AND you get 3-4 hours of shooting time!

Our annual Work Day has been cancelled as we've had enough down time to do the work ourselves...thank you to everyone willing to come in to help!  We appreciate all of you!

Both Advanced Carbine and Precision Scoped Rifle are on the website for sign-up now.

Thank you to everyone who continues to donate to the Women's Shelter by bringing in toiletries and old cell phones.  Thank you from all of us.

A Message from Honorable Ron Jacobson, Mayor of Post Falls

To say that these are interesting and unprecedented times is perhaps the most obvious understatement one can make. Who could have imagined a time where we are encouraged to "social distance" and self-quarantine, where we are discouraged from shaking hands or hugging, a time where we are discouraged from gathering in groups. I hope these are unusual times, and not the new norm.

One thing has become abundantly clear, there are many different opinions in regards to the coronavirus. Some feel a shutdown was essential, others oppose that decision.  Over the past several weeks, I have spoken with the governor's office on several occasions. I have also communicated with other elected officials, the CEO of Kootenai Health, local physicians, many local church leaders, business owners, employees, and others. I have been asked to allow businesses to open, to extend the lockdown, to allow churches to gather, to prevent people from Washington to cross our borders and to open parks and playgrounds. I have been thanked for actions we have taken, been blamed for the governor's order, been called a tyrant, sworn at and prayed for.

My point is that we will never all agree on what should or should not be done. While we are entitled to our own opinion, let's show civility, understanding and kindness with those with different views. I want nothing more than to get businesses open, ALL businesses. That being said, we have to do so in a safe, responsible manner. Even if you don't feel social distancing is important, respect those that do. We will get through this pandemic, not without pain but assisted with kindness.

I ask that we help each other as we move forward. Although you may not agree with someone, treat them with respect and kindness. Patronize our local businesses, help those who are suffering financially, donate to the foodbank and other charities who provide assistance to those in need.
We are one community, one state, one nation, one world. We are all affected by this disease. Let's help each other survive these difficult times through kindness, tolerance and understanding.

New Class starting in May

Church Security Tactics and Considerations

 May 2, 17, 24, 26
June 2, 17, 20

The need for security in any location where people gather to worship continues to increase across the country. Never before have we seen the congregation challenged with respect to safety as we do today.  This class will be offered for the first time in April.

On a weekly basis we receive more inquiries about church security training programs than any other.  We have been teaching church security here at CTS for over 13 years.  Thus far, all the church security training has been in a group team format or individuals attending our defensive classes to gain experience.

I have been working for almost a year on a class that would be comprehensive and focus on the most critical considerations for an individual or group of people that wish to be prepared for the role of a church security participant.

NOTE:  Because of the anticipated popularity of this class I am instituting a 6 month Blackout period on our FREE retake policy.  Students that complete this course will be able to retake the class forever for free starting in November.  Thank you for understanding this policy as this will allow us to immediately accomodate the most students in the shortest amount of time.

This is an 8 hr class limited to 10 students. The primary goal of this class is to develop defensive handgun and personal skills necessary to effectively perform the duties of armed church security.   This course will include both classroom presentations and live fire exercises. Real world scenarios including multiple threats, low-light shooting, wounded shooter drills, team tactics, equipment malfunctions, and moving targets.

Topics in this class include:

Security Team Development, Less Lethal Intervention, Pastoral Protection Elements, Post Incident Considerations, Armed Congregation - Crowd Control, Emergency Response Safe Gun Handling, Firearm Wound Proficiency, Firearm Manipulation and Refinement, Defensive Shooting Skills, Multiple Target Engagement, Moving Targets, Shooting While Moving, and Low-Light Shooting.

Rick Whitehead For Sheriff

Kootenai County Sheriff Race

The citizens of Kootenai County have a unique opportunity to effect much needed change in the leadership of the Kootenai County Sheriff's department.  Current Sheriff Ben Wolfinger has decided not to run for re-election and a number of candidates are seeking our vote.  I believe we must evaluate very closely what these candidates are saying.  We must look beyond any individual name recognition or previous experience and vote for the candidate that will make the changes in this agency that the jail deputies, patrol deputies and this community deserve.

This election year seems so different in many ways.  I don't believe we have ever seen such a huge disparity in the size of the campaign funds of the candidates for sheriff.  I would hate to think that the Kootenai County election for sheriff could be bought.

My biggest fear in this election is that too many voters are going to vote for name recognition without really looking at the issues and any particular candidate's stated improvement plans for the Sheriff's department.  We deserve better!  These candidates have had over a year to develop a comprehensive plan for change and the ultimate improvement of the agency's fiscal condition, workforce morale, and services provided to this community.

I am supporting Rick Whitehead for sheriff because he is by far the most qualified.  Don't take my word  for this.  Reach out and talk to him directly.  Ask the hard questions and read between the lines.  Do this with each candidate before you decide who to vote for.  Only then will you recognize that it is not the person with most signs but the person most qualified for whom we should vote.

Idaho's primary election this year is by absentee balloting only!

Here is the link for ordering your ballot...please take the time to do this and VOTE!  It is your right and your duty.

Consignment Corner

Welcome to the consignment corner.  Remember many of the consignment guns have additional accessories.

We are unable to display or list many of the accessories that are often included with our consignment guns.   Items such as extra magazine (sometime 7 or 8 extra mags) holsters, tools, storage containers, ammunition, etc.

All of these extras add up to the overall value of the sale.  Imagine buying a $500.00 handgun that also has with it six $60.00 mags, that's quite a savings all for $500.00.

Bullseye League meets every Thursday at 4:45 and  6 pm.    If anyone is interested in shooting Bullseye, we would be happy to have you join our league. It's costs  $7 to shoot for the evening and you need 65 rounds of ammunition. The second and fourth Thursday of each month, we shoot the national match course at 50 feet. The third and fifth Thursday of each month, we shoot at 75 feet. The first Thursday of each month, we have a fun shoot. On even-numbered months, we shoot a Centerfire pistol at 50 feet using the 75 foot Target. Makes for some really interesting competition. On the first Thursday of odd numbered months, we shoot the Jack McElroy Bastard Aggregate. For this competition we shoot 30 rounds of rimfire and 30 rounds of centerfire at 75 ft.  We then add both scores together for a possible 600 point match.  So please come join us for some great competition and camaraderie. We love to have new shooters join our group and hope to see you there.

IDPA meets the 1st and 2nd Sunday of every month from 7:30-11am.  Everyone's welcome.  Come watch and learn or participate.  Newcomers always welcome. $10

GSSF Glock Matches: Shoot in 2 of 3 matches in a series and be eligible to win a Glock pistol. Yes, Center Target Sports gives away a Glock every 3 months! Call the range for more details.

WOMEN of CALIBER:

Our "Women of Caliber" group meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month 4:45-7pm.
Please bring eye and ear protection as well as photo ID.  Dummy rounds for your specific caliber are also recommended along with 2-3 magazines if using your own firearm.   If needed, CTS will loan you a handgun free of charge with purchase of their ammo.

Everyone is welcome to attend the educational portion of the meeting from 5-6, however due to the growing number of ladies attending, we do not have enough mentors to work with new shooters. A basic pistol course is required to attend the shooting portion.  Exceptions need to be discussed with Darla.

May: Back To Basics, improving the fundamentals

Jun: MantisX is the greatest product I know for both dry fire and live fire analysis. We will have the rep here to demonstrate and allow us to practice using the product.

New Divison for GSSF

Yes, we are hosting GSSF matches again...this series will be held on May 16, June 6 and June 20th from
9-1.
Since the range does not open until 11am on Saturdays, only GSSF shooters will be allowed in from 9-11.  We will limit the number of shooters on the range and the rest will stage in the retail area.  Thank you for your cooperation and patience!  Peggy

As many of you are aware, Glock introduced the G44 their .22lr in January. We have had some questions about whether it will be included in the GSSF matches each month, and we will be starting a division for that model in April.  We chose April as that is the start of the next series when we start a new course of fire.

The G44 did not officially become available until after our match in January and we thought it would make it more equitable to give people time to purchase one and compete with a full cycle of three months rather than just two months. We also did not know for sure what the availability of the new model would be. Fortunately, there are ample supplies available and we know that some of you have already purchased one. So, how does this new model fit in with the monthly sessions?

There will be a new division for Rimfire and only one plaque will be provided. Anyone shooting the G44 will be able to compete and earn the 500 patch for a perfect score. Only stock G44's will be allowed to participate in the matches and any modified models will be unable to shoot them in the competition. So you now know that there will be a Stock Rimfire division and it will shoot the same course of fire as the other stock models. Yes, you get to shoot at the 75 foot targets that you all love with your G44, and I know you are all happy about that (he says with a smile on his face, or maybe it is an evil little grin).

We know those of you who have the G44 are practicing and excited to start using them in competition, so it is coming soon. I look forward to seeing who will be the first 500 shooter.

Don't Forget Our Non-Profits
They Still Need Our Help...

Please do everything you can to keep the Food Bank and Blood Center in your thoughts and prayers.  This is such a critical time for our community Non-Profits.

Particularly hard hit is the Post Falls Food Bank and The Vitalant Blood Center.  The demand for food increases  but the availability of donations to the food bank is reduced.

The food bank gets a lot of their food from donations made by the grocery stores and the grocery stores currently do not have excess food.   Remember you can donate to the Food Bank any time of year and they are in desperate need of so much as they try to do so much with so little.

Also, the limitations on people gathering and being out and about have sure limited the blood banks ability to collect.  If you're healthy and able, please call them to schedule an appointment for a donation.

Gunsmith Corner

Dear Center Target supporters,

Wow.... It's May, and I am not entirely sure where the month of April went. It has been a busy month which is good and bad.  Good, because l love the work I do, bad, because I have had no time to think about this month's newsletter. I think I'll request some feedback from all of you.

I was asked by a client the other day about a class covering some deeper details of disassembly, cleaning and minor Gunsmithing. So knowing that I have at least one person interested I'll seek some input to see if there is any strong interest. This class would go beyond the basics, delving into the actual function process of various hand guns.

I think also technical language so we could understand things by name more accurately. I love to talk about the specifics of function and how little things like slide drag, too little or too much lubrication, ammunition selection and shooter understanding play into common pistol failures.

I may approach Ed about doing this as a 3 - 4 hour free clinic or if the interest is high enough an eight hour paid class.  Further in we might include classes on rifles and shotguns to discuss the variations of action types and their functions.

Please let me know your thoughts on a class of this type.  Please email me at gunsmith@centertargetsports.com

I want to thank you all for your continuing support of my presence here at Center Target Sports. Because of you I have gotten to handle and work on many firearms that would not have been available to me under different circumstances. This last month there have been guns in my shop from an 1897 shotgun and a very rare Luger made in Texas to a very modern Barret M82 semi-automatic rifle chambered for 50 caliber machine gun.

You guys really make my life good.  Please stay safe.  I'm glad our range is open again and that I see more of you face to face every day.

Stop and say hello if you have time.

Thanks again,

Clint

This Month's Shooting/Safety Tip

Dry Fire... Dry Fire.... Dry Fire

This is a repeat Tip as some of you long time readers know.  A number of you have emailed and called wanting to know about Dry Fire practice.   Especially with the social distancing situation, many people still can't get to a live fire range, I felt it appropriate to reprint this tip.

Dry Fire practice is not the end all solution.  In fact, most firearms instructors don't even know how to do it or explain how to do it properly.   Dry Fire practice is just one small component to a good practice routine.  Remember the subconscious will quickly realize the gun is empty and before you know it you will be doing perfect dry fire manipulations.  Then you go back to live fire and your back to your bad habits with the trigger.   It is a process and it will take time.  Below you will find some tips on how to get the most from your dry fire practice.

As you have heard me say many times, Smooth Trigger Press is critical to accurate consistent shooting.  Regardless if you are shooting a bullseye match, IDPA, or just practicing your defensive shooting skills, Trigger Press is a critical component to shooting.

It has been proven that weapon handling skills degrade by 20% in only one week if you are inactive. Dry fire practice is crucial to improving and maintaining live fire skills. In dry-fire, you essentially do everything except experience the bang and the cycling of the action. By not having to deal with recoil management or noise issues, you will be able to concentrate on proper equipment manipulation and trigger control.

And it is FREE!

The key to effective practice is to perform the fundamentals perfectly. Trigger control, sight alignment, sight picture, grip and posture can all be practiced during dry-fire but it must be done correctly.  Aim at a very small target.  My DF target is about a 1/4" circle.  The small target magnifies any poor follow through, trigger control or other poor techniques.

Call every shot!  You must know if you pulled the shot or jerked the trigger.  The old adage "Only perfect practice makes perfect" should be followed.

How Often To Practice Dry Fire:

I believe you should dry-fire 5 times as much as you live fire.  Keep the sessions to under 15 minutes.  Two or three sessions per week will result in noticeable improvement in fairly short order. It's not productive to practice for long periods because people tend to get sloppy which does nothing but build bad habits. It's better to do 15 minutes three times a week than one 45 minute session once per week.

Some Dry Fire Safety Considerations:
  1. Clear your gun - Remove all ammo from training area. Then check it again!
  2. Place target in a safe direction to minimize potential for injury if a negligent discharge occurs.
  3. Visually and manually inspect guns, magazines and training rounds to ensure no live rounds are present.
  4. Repeat Step 3.
  5. Do not allow yourself to be disturbed. If you are, stop the session and deal with it. Do "condition check" upon your return.
  6. When you have completed the practice session...  NO MORE PRACTICE FOR THE SESSION.  REMOVE YOURSELF FROM THE PRACTICE AREA BEFORE YOU LOAD YOUR FIREARM.  Never make your gun hot in the DF practice area...NEVER!
