Harriet & Joe Foster YMCA Supporting Healthy LivingArticle1

The Harriet and Joe Foster YMCA was awarded $2500 for providing leadership in conducting the Healthy Living Matters neighborhood Community Healthy Living Index (CHLI) for this area. The award was used to support healthy living efforts outlined in their community action plan, to include purchasing equipment, soil, materials and fund maintenance costs to build two 4x8 block gardens. The gardens will be used to teach youth about healthy eating. The youth will be responsible for growing plants from the seed, yielding crops, and maintaining the garden in general. Staff will also send children home with seeds to plant gardens of their own at home, along with healthy eating recipes using the crops they have yielded.

In addition, the Harriet and Joe Foster YMCA after school site was awarded with $500 to help support the healthy living project goals outlined in the action plan. They teamed up with Garden Oaks Elementary to purchase Coordinated Approach To Child Health (CATCH) equipment to help increase physical activity among students. The equipment is being incorporated into a 45 minute physical activity plan and the kids are having a blast using them!

The meeting primarily focused on the built environment aspect of the HLM Community Action Plan with presentations from Houston Parks Board, Houston Tomorrow and HCPHES' Environmental Public Health Division. Chris Browne, HLM Co-Chair, facilitated a Charrette Framework Development Exercise that will help HLM with future community charrettes for integrating neighborhoods with the Bayou Greenways.
In addition, Tim Schauer provided an update on the 84th Texas State Legislative Session.  Dr. Ann Smith-Barnes ended the Collaborative meeting with a continuation of the HLM Challenge: "What can you do to influence healthy choices in your sphere of influence?
