Team Chicago & FC United Continue Quest For
US Youth Soccer National Championship

Six teams from Illinois, Raiders FC (Under-14 Boys), Chicago Magic (Under-16 Boys), FC United (Under-16 Girls), Eclipse Elite Black (Under-16 Girls), Chicago Fire Youth Soccer Club (Under-17 Boys) and Team Chicago Botafogo (Under-19 Girls), earned a spot in the US Youth Soccer National Championships which kicked-off on Tuesday in Germantown, MD. After intense group play, two of those teams will continue their quest towards a National Championship, having secured a spot in Saturday's U16 Girls semifinal and U19 championship match.

FC United Select opened group play in dominant fashion beating US Youth Soccer National League Champion Carlsbad Elite 97/98 of Cal South 5-0. After the scoring bonanza of game, the US Youth Soccer Region II Champions played to a 0-0 draw against MRM Coyotes of Maryland, another National League representative.  In order to secure a spot in the semifinals, all FC United needed to do was leave with a draw in game three of group play. Two late goals provided the advantage need and sent FC United to Saturday's National Under-16 Girls Semifinal vs Tampa Bay United 97 Premier at 9:00 am CST.

You can watch the U16 semifinal match here

Thru group play, two FC United players sit among the tournament's top goal scorers with Kelly Maday scoring three times so far and Devin Burns twice.

Team Chicago Botafogo returned to the US Youth Soccer National Championships as defending champions. After drawing 1-1 against Legends FC of Cal South, game two of U19 group play saw a rematch of the 2013 U18 National Championship with Team Chicago taking on VSA Heat Blue of Virginia, which also netted a 1-1 draw

Team Chicago ended the scoreless stalemate after Elizabeth Bartels was taken down in the box. Hope Addario stepped up and drilled her penalty into the bottom left corner to put Team Chicago up in the 14th minute. The 2012 National Champions were not going away easy, and in the 55th minute Ashley Herndon capitalized off of a Team Chicago defender that failed to head the ball back to her keeper and Herndon intercepted the pass before calmly sending in the equalizer.

A 5-0 win in their final group play match has set-up another rematch vs VSA Heat Blue in tomorrow's National Final scheduled for 4:45pm CST.

You can watch the U19 championship match here

Although eliminated during group play, each of the following teams represented Illinois and Region II well during the tournament

  • Raiders FC finished group play 1-2 tied for second in the group. They failed to advance to semifinals based on group tie-breakers
  • Chicago Magic finished 1-1-1, tied for second in their group. They failed to advance to semifinals based on group tie-breakers
  • Eclipse Elite Black finished 1-1-1 in group play,
  • Chicago Fire Youth Soccer Club finished 0-2-1 in group play
