Travel Tips for Spring Break

Are you are ready to escape the cold and head to a warm destination? The spring break travel season is almost here. But, before heading out, now is a good time to brush up on some great travel safety tips!

Don’t Broadcast Your Plans on Social Media
If potential thieves have access to your spring break travel plans, they may target your home or your car when you’re gone. Forgo the social media posting until after you return.

Notify Card Companies Before You Leave
Make a quick call to both your bank and your credit card companies to alert them of your travel plans, particularly if you’re going out of the country.

Have Your Insurance Information Handy
Health insurance is similar to rental car insurance: If you’re traveling domestically you’re probably covered, but a call to your agent is a good way to double check what’s covered and what’s not. The latter is especially the case if you’re headed out of the country.

Check the News for Your Destination
If you’ve booked your trip with a travel agent, ask for any insider updates on weather or local events that may impact your plans. If you’ve booked the trip yourself, find the local newspaper online for information. And if you’re going out of the country, always check the U.S. Department of State Travel Warnings website and plan accordingly.

Get Your Car Road Trip Ready
Visiting the next town over or the next state? Then your timely oil and fluid changes probably cover you. But for longer road trips, arrange for a once-over by your mechanic to check tire pressure and wear, brakes, fluid levels and conditions, and wiper blades.

Virginia Habitat for Humanity Freezin For A Reason

The Eastern Shore of Virginia Habitat for Humanity would like to invite you to participate in the Annual “Freezin For A Reason.”

The dip in the bay will be held Saturday, February 23, 2019, at the Cape Charles Beach.

Join Celebrity Dipper Richard Davis, Virginia Farm Manager of Lipman Family Farms, in raising needed funds for Eastern Shore Habitat for Humanity. The proceeds are used to help provide vital housing for those in need on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Their previous fundraising efforts have allowed the organization to build two houses a year. Eastern Shore Habitat hosts three major fundraisers a year and this event is integral for them to continue building two houses a year. The need for housing is in great demand. Annually they have over 150 applicants asking to be selected for houses, two applicants are chosen by our selection committee for Habitat houses each year.

There are several ways for you to be involved in the Annual “Freezin For A Reason.” First, you can participate as a team or as an individual in raising pledges to dip with fellow dippers. Alternatively, you can support our Celebrity Dippers if you choose not to brave the cold water but would like to contribute as a sponsor.

Prizes will be awarded to individuals (18 and younger) and teams that raise the most sponsorship dollars.

Eastern Shore Oyster Stew Recipe

A great way to warm up this winter is with a hearty bowl of soup! This is a simple soup to prepare, but a delicious soup to eat. A rich and creamy base and accents of warm spices pair perfectly with Virginia oysters.

1-1/2 cups milk

1/2 cup heavy cream

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground white pepper

1/8 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg

1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 pint shucked oysters, liquor reserved

4 chives, chopped

Warm the milk, cream, salt, white pepper, nutmeg and cayenne in a large saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until hot, about 10 minutes.

Warm the butter over low heat in a medium saucepan until melted. Add the oysters and liquor, and cook, stirring occasionally, until the edges of the oysters begin to curl, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the oyster mixture to the milk mixture, and cook on medium-low heat for about 2 minutes; do not boil.

Divide the soup among four serving bowls and garnish with the chives before serving.

Yields 4 servings
