Walk to School Day
Walk
Get ready, get set, GO! Mohr families get ready to put on your walking shoes for our 8th Annual Walk to School Day! Our school will be partnering with the City of Pleasanton to celebrate this fun event which will be held on Thursday, October 7, from 7:45 - 8:15 a.m. on the blacktop by the school playground.

You don't even have to make breakfast! The City of Pleasanton will be treating Mohr families to breakfast bars, cocoa, milk and coffee. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to spend some extra time with their kids and talk with them about safe walking habits as well as the healthy benefits of walking. Also, by allowing children to safely walk to school, traffic is reduced around our schools. So mark your calendars and please plan to join us on Thursday, October 7th!

A Culinary Event Benefiting Our Schools!

October 16, 2010, 6:30-10:30PM
at CarrAmerica Conference Center Pleasanton

If you enjoy sampling an array of gourmet foods and sipping a selection of fine wines, then be sure to mark your calendar for Saturday, Oct. 16.

Cub Scouts

Pack 934 always welcomes New Cub Scouts

Cub ScoutMost of our boys attend Mohr Elementary school. We have a great program that helps our boys develop by providing positive influence on character development, helping boys develop habits and attitudes of good citizenship, encourage good sportsmanship and pride in growing strong in mind and body.

Our boys have an opportunity to improve understanding within themselves, their families, our community, country and world. Our strength comes from our parent volunteers who help foster a sense of personal achievement by helping boys develop new interests and skills. The boys learn how to be helpful and do one's best, while having fun and discovering exciting new things.

We encourage all interested boys and their families to join, especially those in 1st-3rd grade. Check out our Website at www.cspack934.com for more information or upcoming events!

California PTA Urges You to Vote

PTA in California

Empowering our members with skills in advocacy so that they may speak out effectively on behalf of children is one of the core purposes of PTA. California State PTA has published a Special Election Issue of PTA in California with a wealth of information to assist PTA members in engaging in key races and issues for the upcoming statewide election November 2.

Although PTA does not support or oppose candidates, we do provide opportunities to educate our members about those seeking key offices that will impact the lives of children and family in California. Inside this newsletter you will find responses to PTA questions from Larry Aceves and Tom Torlakson, candidates for California Superintendent of Public Instruction (pages 3-6).

For the November 2010 statewide election, the California State PTA has adopted positions on three of the ballot measures. Proposition analyses, including background information, arguments for and against, and rationale for PTA support, is included in the newsletter for Proposition 25 - Support, Proposition 24 - Support and Proposition 19 - Neutral (pages 7-9).

GATE Nominations Due December 8

Nominations for gifted and talented education (GATE) testing are being accepted now

GATE

Nominations due december 08, 2010

Schools in Pleasanton are preparing for the annual Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) testing period.

The purpose of GATE services is to address the needs of students who need challenges beyond what the general education program can offer. The district works with school staffs to provide high quality differentiated opportunities for learning that meet students' particular abilities and talents and to focus on the areas of need.

Every student up to grade 8 in Pleasanton Unified School District (PUSD) is offered the opportunity to be tested at least once for GATE identification. Students may be tested several times, as often as every other year.

Students in grades 4 to 8 must be nominated by a teacher, parent, or other school staff to be tested for GATE services. Parents may nominate their child by submitting a completed Parent Nomination / Questionnaire / Permission for GATE to the Special Projects Office. Parents wishing to nominate their child are encouraged to talk with their child's teacher about the benefits and implications of GATE testing. The Parent Nomination for GATE form can be found on the district web site www.pleasanton.k12.ca.us. Click on the Educational Services button, the GATE button and then the Identification button. There, parents can read the instructions and download the District GATE parent nomination form. Nomination forms are also available at each school site.

Students are not eligible to be nominated if they took the CogAT test last year.

Students will be tested during the school day at their own school. A letter notifying parents/guardians of the testing dates and other information will be sent home mid January. Testing will be begin in late January and finish in late February. The test will be administered at each school on different days during this period.
