A Note from

Fr. Jeff

Perhaps this would be a good time to do a bit of planning ahead in a spiritual way before Halloween next week. All Hallows' Eve, October 31st, better known as Halloween. We celebrate it the evening before All Saints Day, November 1st.

Before you take or send your children out to trick or treat, or before you welcome all the ghosts and ghouls to your front door, think about taking a few moments to have a special All Hallow's Eve Service in your own home. Invite other family or friends to be part of your service. Gather a Bible, a Book of Common Prayer, and a few candles to set the sacredness of the space.

ALL HALLOW'S EVE SERVICE AT HOME

The service begins in partial darkness.

L: Light and peace, in Jesus Christ our Lord.

R: Thanks be to God.

L: If we say, "surely the darkness will cover me, and the light around me turns to night," darkness is not dark to you, O Lord; the night is as bright as the day; darkness and light to you are both alike. (Psalm 139:10-11)

L: Let us pray. Lord Christ, your saints have been the lights of the world in every generation: Grant that we, who follow in their footsteps, may be made worthy to enter with them into that heavenly country where you live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.

Candles are now lighted. The Phos hilaron is said.

R:  O gracious light,

Pure brightness of the ever living Father in heaven,

O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,

And our eyes behold the vesper light,

We sing your praises, O God:

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

You are worthy at all times

to be praised by happy voices,

O Son of God, O Giver of life,

And to be glorified through all the worlds.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The service continues with two or three lessons, each followed by a Psalm, Canticle, or hymn and Prayer.

The Witch of Endor

1 Samuel 28:3-25 and Psalm 130

It would be appropriate that this scripture lesson be read by a narrator, and by other readers for Saul, the witch, and Samuel.

Let us pray:

Almighty and ever living God, you have made all things in our wisdom and established the boundaries of life and death: Grant

that we may obey your voice in this world, and in the world to come may enjoy that rest and peace which you have appointed

for your people; through Jesus Christ who is Resurrection and Life, and who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

The Valley of the Dry Bones

Ezekiel 37:1-14 and Psalm 143:1-11

Let us pray:

O God, you have called your people to your service from age to age. Do not give us over to death, but raise us up to serve you,

to praise you, and to glorify your holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The War in Heaven

Revelation 12:1-12 and Psalm 103:17-22 or Canticle 1 (parts I and IV) or Canticle 12

Let us pray:

O most merciful and mighty God, your son Jesus Christ was born of the Blessed Virgin Mary to bring us salvation and to

establish your kingdom on earth: Grant that Michael and all your angels may defend your people against Satan and every

evil foe, and that at the last we may come to that heavenly country where your saints sing for ever sing your praise; through

Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The service concludes with the singing of a favorite hymn of praise, the Lord's Prayer, the Collect for All Saint's Day, and a final blessing.

Collect for All Saint's Day

Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord:

Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have

prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in

glory everlasting. Amen.

May the blessing of Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit be with us now and remain with us forever. Amen.

Our service is ended, let us go in the light and peace of Christ.

Thanks be to God.

Porch Sitting with Jesus is a weekly reflection focused on the Scripture reading (usually a Gospel reading, but not always) from the Revised Common Lectionary for the upcoming Sunday liturgy. Fr. Jeff writes monthly, along with three other diocesan colleagues, the Rev. Maria Evans, the Rev. Leslie Scoopmeyer, and the Rev. Jessica Wachter.

November --

A time for remembering

our deceased family members

and friends

Altar of Remembrance

As a way of lovingly remembering those family members and friends who we are no longer with us, but in that great Cloud of Witness, you are invited to bring a special photo or other sacred item of remembrance with you to church on Sunday, November 1st, the Feast of All Saints, as we create an Altar of Remembrance. You will be invited to join a procession with other church members in placing the photos or items on the main high altar during the Prayers of the People, where we will offer a prayer of remembrance and thanksgiving for their lives and all they have meant to us. We will keep the photos and items on the Altar of Remembrance throughout the month of November, and pray for these loved ones each week. Please put your name on the back of the photos or other special items, and please take them back to your homes after the service on Sunday, November 29th.

P B & J Ministry happens EVERY Sunday!

Did you know that we put about 16

P B & J sandwiches out each week in our Blessing Box for those in need, and they are gone almost immediately. It's a simple sandwich. A little sweet. A little salty. And nutritious and delicious! It really doesn't take much to put one together. But as we have found out, people really are in need of this small simple act of kindness and love - any time of year!

But those P B & J's don't make themselves. We need your help. So swing by the kitchen any Sunday after church to see how you can help make our gift of P B &J's to our neighbors in need.

If you’d like to provide supplies – we always welcome loaves of whole grain breads, jars of smooth peanut butter, and jelly. Or if you would like to make a monetary donation to this simple ministry, just let Angela Beecher know.

It can start with a

fruit cup...

For most of us breakfast in our busy lives is grab and go. But for some of our neighbors there is nothing to grab. Many find that they cannot afford three meals a day. And some cannot afford even one.

Please help stock our Blessing Box!

Simple food and toiletries are needed and so appreciated.

Items always needed!

  • Protein bars
  • Canned pasta, easy to open pull top
  • Single serve tuna packets
  • Fruit cups
  • Personal hygiene items:
  • Toothpaste and Toothbrushes
  • Disposable razors
  • Sanitary products for women
  • Travel size toiletries - shampoo, lotion, & coffee packets

Place items in the basket at the back of church.

Thank you for your kindness and generosity.

Our Sanctuary candle burns in silent adoration with our Lord in the reserved Eucharist in thanksgiving for Randy Wicks and Jim Harris. These guys have worked tirelessly over the summer attending to Heigham House maintenance projects, upgrading the church lighting to LED, and in building the new altar platform on the floor of the nave. They are a true blessing to the St. Paul's community. Well done, good and faithful servants!

Our next Vestry Meeting

will be

THIS WEDNESDAY, October 28

at

6:30 p.m. on a Zoom Call.

Our first and third Thursday meals are just around the corner!

There is a sign up sheet on the table outside the parish hall for you to sign up to volunteer to prepare and serve the meals now through the end of this 2025. Please take a moment to commit to do your part in extending hospitality and care for our own parish family and those who live in our neighborhood.

Our first meal is happening on

November 5!

2027 Stewardship Campaign

Thanks to everyone who was able to participate in last Sunday’s Stewardship Luncheon. We had good food and even better conversation about what inspires us to give and to serve, our hopes for St. Paul’s in the coming year, and what we plan to focus on as we welcome a new priest. Pledge cards were distributed and are available on the table at the back of the church. (If you need one mailed to you, please email office@carondeletchurch.org.) Our 2027 Pledge Card Ingathering and celebration will be Sunday, November 8. Please return your pledge before then or bring it with you that Sunday.

PUBLIC ADVOCACY MISSION

RELEASES NOVEMBER VOTER GUIDE

by The Rev. Dr. Teresa Mithen Danieley

On August 4, 2026 over 80% of Missouri voters rejected Amendments 4 & 5, which could have had a devastating impact on Missouri’s democracy and economy. Since then, some Missouri politicians have been trying to create chaos in the courts and confusion in the press ahead of the November 3 election. We hope that this Fall 2026 Voter Guide, along with the Vote Faithfully Reflections 2026 will assist you in being an engaged citizen and informed voter this fall. As Mary Carr, a member of Christ Church Cathedral and a member of the League of Women Voters of Metro St. Louis, wrote in her 2024 essay “Vote Faithfully to Protect Democracy,” “When you vote this year, prayerfully consider whether your votes will strengthen or weaken our democracy.” Thank you in advance for being an educated and prayerful voter!
