Central Rappahannock Regional Library

September 4, 2025

Welcome to your library news update!

The Westmoreland Library on the Go Van launched on Tuesday, September 2! The van will increase library access for Westmoreland County residents by bringing technological resources, as well as traditional library services, to community hubs. Customers can view the schedule at librarypoint.org/library-go.

This fall also sees the launch of the Kindergarten Library Card Campaign. Parents of kindergarteners, from 9/2-9/30, look for information to come home from your school about getting a library card--something that can help your child get a great start on learning. Kindergarteners can come to any branch, from 9/2 to 11/3, to pick up a free book for their very own. Library cards aren’t just for kids—anyone can request a card through this online form or stop by any branch to sign up in person.

Teachers--the library is here to support you! There's a new edition of Curriculum Connections on the Teacher's Place page. This is a useful guide to the many ways Central Rappahannock Regional Library can connect with both teachers and their students, from online tutoring at no charge to classroom visits to contests that will fire up students' problem-solving skills and creativity. Two popular, upcoming competitions are the all-ages, far-flinging Trebuchet Contest and the Teen Stop Motion Video Contest.

Did you know the library has a MakerLab for the community called IdeaSpace? IdeaSpace has lots of fun and useful equipment, such as a 3D scanner, and the staff will teach you how to use it at no charge. Read all about how to get started here.

September 15 through October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. Discover recommended books for adults that highlight Hispanic cultures and traditions, featuring both novels and nonfiction. For children, check out Pura Belpré-Winning Picture Books, outstanding youth literature celebrating the Latino experience.

The National Book Awards are announced every November, and there is a special category for Young People's Literature. Teens, get ready to read this year's winners by checking out past winners and finalists.

Jane Austen fans—or those new to her works—can join in celebrating her 250-year legacy with special events and book discussions. On 9/9, Colonial Beach Brewing's monthly Books and Beer group will be discussing her works. Later in the year, drop by for other bon ton events in Austen's honor, including afternoon teas.

Celebrate the 250th anniversary of the colonial rebellion, better known as the American Revolution, with book group discussions on pertinent topics. Gather at historic Rising Sun Tavern, a few blocks down from the Fredericksburg Branch, on Tuesday evening, 9/9, to discuss From Trenton to Yorktown: Turning Points in the Revolutionary War, by John R. Maass. Space is limited at the tavern, so you will need to sign up to reserve your place. You can find more Revolutionary gatherings--and recommended reading--at librarypoint.org/va250/.

Expires 10/5/25
