Welcome to your library news update!

Mark your calendars for Howell Branch’s 15-year anniversary next month on Thursday, October 9. Customers can enjoy light refreshments all day and a brief ceremony at 4:00 pm. Come out and celebrate this milestone for your community!

September is Library Card Sign-up Month! A library card is a ticket to endless possibilities for everyone in the community. And, if you know a kindergartener, have them stop by any library branch from now through November 3 to receive their very own book to keep!

Memory Café is a gathering at the library for those with early-stage dementia and their caregivers to relax and reminisce. Salem Church Branch hosts the next session on 9/19, and Fredericksburg Branch hosts on 10/24.

The library has classes, conversation groups, and online learning for those interested in learning English or other languages. Check out the English Language Learning page for more information for ELL students.

Sign up to enjoy an online conversation with Smithsonian professionals Adrián Aldaba and Emily Key on 10/2, as they discuss Nuestra América and highlight inspiring stories of Latinos throughout history.

Sensory Time is an adaptive storytime for youth with autism and other developmental challenges, accompanied by caregivers. Sign up online for monthly sessions at either Fredericksburg Branch (next session: 9/22) or Howell Branch (next session: 10/9).

Two special Grow a Reader storytimes to know about focus on the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah (9/19 at Porter Branch) and Hispanic Heritage Month (various dates and locations), with the latter including bilingual stories and songs. Grow a Reader specials are for all ages, attending with a caregiver.

Students in grades K-6, who would like some in-person help with homework, can attend Homework Buddies sessions to get help from teen mentors, Mondays at Porter Branch. Tutoring is also available online through HelpNow for all ages.

Middle-grade students looking for great eBook and eAudiobook choices should check out Middle-Grade Must-Reads for stories that are magical, adventurous, gripping, and/or hilarious. Hispanic Heritage Titles will immerse teens in storylines featuring Hispanic characters in fantastic, modern, and/or romantic situations.

Want to try out some new tech? Explore new image possibilities when you borrow the Neewer LED Ring Light Kit from the Tech on the Go Equipment Collection. The Ring Light Kit includes a light, a stand, filters, smartphone holder, white and orange color filters, and more. See the whole Tech on the Go collection here, and check out the equipment at IdeaSpace!

250 years ago, the world turned upside down in an unprecedented revolution. In 1789, Alexander Hamilton became the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. Three prominent Virginians -- one a great friend and two who became bitter political rivals -- were part of his story. Through October 20, stop by Porter Branch to view the traveling exhibition, "Founding Frenemies: Hamilton and the Virginians," on loan from the Virginia Museum of History & Culture. This exhibit includes many nods to the very popular Broadway production Hamilton, which inspired its creation.

Wishing you all a fantastic fall!
