Scenes From The Washington DC Tribal Nations Summit

Last week, the U.S. Department of the Interior hosted The White House Tribal Nations Summit. Tribal President John D. Johnson, Sr., attended the government-to-government meeting in Washington, D.C., to ensure our voices were part of the conversation. Can you find him in this photo?

"It was amazing to have so many Tribal Leaders all in one place advocating for their communities and informing the federal government’s work to honor our promises to Tribes," Interior Secretary Deb Haaland posted on Facebook.

The 2022 White House Tribal Nations Summit, hosted at the Department of the Interior, provided an opportunity for Administration and Tribal Leaders to discuss ways the federal government can invest in and strengthen nation-to-nation relationships as well as ensure that progress in Indian Country endures for years to come. View some summit highlights in the first segment of this video from the Interior Department.

President Johnson shared some of his photos from the summit below. Pictured are some of the tribes represented at the summit along with President Johnson standing alongside Interior Secretary Deb Haaland.

WPR Radio Interviews Emerson Coy & Dion Reynolds About Tribe's Broadband Internet Access Expansion Effort

Wisconsin Public Radio recently interviewed Emerson Coy and Dion Reynolds. Both have been instrumental in securing a $25 million grant from the U.S. Commerce Department to help fund the Tribe's planned build out of a Tribally-owned broadband network to increase internet access in Lac du Flambeau.

According to the WPR interview, Emerson says, "Our goal is to have 2,300 homes connected to it. And if there's other businesses on the way, we will also do that as well."

"It's going to take us a couple of years to get out to all of them," Emerson added, "because it's a very large project. We live in an area where there's lots of lakes. We're 12 miles by 12 miles — 144 square miles — a third of it is water. We're going around lakes. It's not like in the city (where) everything's a subdivision. We have our work cut out for us, but we have it all planned out pretty well."

Christmas Festival Volunteers & Donations Needed

Family Services has been busy planning our Christmas Festival for our local families. We are excited to announce that the festival will be on December 15 from 5 pm to 7 pm at the LDF Public School small gym.

We will be having pictures with Santa, North Pole selfie station, cookie decorating, a cake walk, and several different tables with a variety of Christmas ornaments/projects to make, including a Gnome station.

We are excited for those who have already committed themselves to help with this event. However, we are still looking for volunteers. We are looking for volunteers in the following areas:

  • Donations of toys/a family activity
  • Donations of cake/cupcakes
  • Donation of time to help out at the event with setting up, being charge of an area, and clean up afterwards.

If you are interested in helping with this amazing and wonderful event for our families, please email Kheller@ldftribe.com

Let Your Voice Be Heard: Wolf Plan Needs Your Input

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently released a draft of the updated Wolf Management Plan for public review and comment. This management plan, according to the DNR, lays out a holistic approach to ensuring the state's wolf population remains healthy and secure while balancing the public's diverse interests.

The public can offer feedback on the draft plan through Jan. 10, 2023. The draft plan and instructions for giving feedback can be found on the DNR’s Wolf Management Plan webpage.

“The proposed draft Wolf Management Plan reflects the detailed and significant work done by DNR staff to ensure the health and stability of Wisconsin’s wolf population. Input from diverse and varied stakeholders was critical to the development of this proposal," said Wisconsin DNR Secretary Preston D. Cole. "I encourage the public to review and provide robust, meaningful feedback on the plan to the DNR."

The proposed plan was developed in consideration of many factors, including public input, consultations with Wisconsin's tribal nations, scientific literature reviews, a study on current public attitudes towards wolves and potential outcomes of various management decisions.
