Tribal Leaders Welcome State Officials To Flambeau
Last week, Lac du Flambeau hosted Tribes from across Wisconsin in what’s become an annual event to provide an opportunity for Tribal Leaders and state government to collaborate and share insights on important issues. The event was hosted last year by Lac Courte Oreilles.

Governor Evers and his administration secretaries, as well as Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes, attended the day-long event. Following an opening drum ceremony to kick off the event, Tribal President John D. Johnson Sr. welcomed Tribal Leaders and state government officials to Lac du Flambeau followed by lunch that was provided on the lawn along Pokegama Lake.
Governor Evers spoke before dozens of attendees who ate lunch and discussed how the state and Tribes can work together on issues. Former Green Bay Packers Gilbert Brown, William Henderson and Andrea Rison were guests at the event. They addressed the crowd and were thankful for the invitation to enjoy the outdoors and fishing, which followed lunch and dinner. William Henderson in particular spoke of the importance of protecting and preserving natural resources for future generations and how he personally enjoys and values what nature offers.

On Climate Change, Manoomin & Flint Corn

WXPR radio recently spent time with Lac du Flambeau Tribal Member Greg Johnson. The conversation centered on climate change and the effects on manoomin. But it also covered another traditional food, Flint Corn.

“If you went back 150 or 200 years, our people didn’t have pantries, but they had birchbark baskets. In these birchbark baskets, in their food caches, there was both corn and wild rice,” says Greg Johnson, a Lac du Flambeau tribal member, cultural teacher and artist.
