Tribal Elder Food Box Distribution Today!

FoodShare Reporting Requirements Change Nov. 1

There is a new reporting rule for FoodShare. Effective November 1, 2023, all FoodShare households must report a substantial lottery or gambling winning.

Following Section 4009 of the Agricultural Act of 2014, households in which a member has a substantial lottery or gambling winning are ineligible for FoodShare until they meet allowable asset and income eligibility requirements.

What is a substantial winning?

A substantial lottery and gambling winning is defined as a winning from a single hand, ticket, game, or bet that is equal to or greater than the resource limit for elderly or disabled households as defined in federal law. The current reporting threshold for a substantial lottery and gambling winning is a single winning of $4,250 or more before taxes or other withheld amounts from a single hand, ticket, game, or bet. This dollar amount may change based on the annual cost of living adjustment made every October.

What are the reporting requirements?

If someone in a FoodShare household has a substantial winning, it must be reported to their agency by the 10th day of the next month. If the household’s Six-Month Reporting form or renewal is due before this date, they must report the winning then.

All FoodShare households should have received a letter in October informing them of the new reporting requirement. Members also receive information about their reporting requirements on each Notice of Decision.

Tribe Supports Bad River In Fight Against Line 5 Pipeline

The Tribe recently joined 28 Tribal Nations and four tribal organizations in filing an amicus brief with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit outlining the U.S. trespass laws that protect the inherent sovereignty of Tribal Nations and their lands from corporate land grabs.

The friend-of-the court brief supports the Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians’ (Bad River Band) battle to eject the trespassing corporation Enbridge Energy, Inc., and remove the Line 5 crude oil pipeline from the Band’s reservation located in Northern Wisconsin, along the shores of Lake Superior.

“No right-of-way means no right to operate on tribal land, just like on any other type of land holding in the United States,” said Bay Mills Indian Community President Whitney Gravelle. “As sovereign governments and landowners, it is the absolute right of every Tribal Nation to expel any entity operating on their lands without consent.”

Scenes From Around LDF Public School

Keeping up with the students and all their activities is a lot of fun. We share some of the recent happenings with some photos of various grade levels and what they have been doing and learning. Pictured above are some 4th graders who experimented working with 3D pens in their STEM class.

These 3rd graders pictured above finished their Starry Night drawings recently. Their artistry is inspired by the artist Vincent Van Gogh.

Students and families pictured above had a great time at Family Fun Night.
