Share Your Thoughts On Broadband Internet Access
The Vilas County Economic Development Corporation Broadband Workgroup is pleased to launch its Gen2 county-wide broadband survey to develop a detailed map of accurate broadband availability and coverage. This map will be used as a baseline to identify areas where broadband needs to be improved, provide accurate data for future grant applications, and demonstrate improvement.

Did you participate in last year’s broadband survey? Thank you if you did. Click HERE for the results.

What kinds of information are we looking for in 2022?
  • What type of location? (Home, Business, Seasonal Home, Other)
  • Is broadband available? If yes, you will be directed to an automated broadband speed test, which will upload the results to our database.
  • Email address

The survey takes 2 minutes to complete. Please share this survey with your colleagues, friends, and family who reside or visit in Vilas County. Let’s get at least 5,000 responses!

Workforce Training & Business Development Center News
BDC Holds Successful Grand Opening Event
Pictured above from left to right: Tribal Council Member Jeffery Bauman, BDC Board Member Racquel Bell, Tribal Council Member Jamie-Ann Allen, Tribal Planning Emerson Coy, BDC Chief Operating Officer Dion Reynolds, EDA Representative Tom Baron, Tribal President John Johnson, Tribal Speaker, and Navy Veteran Marsha Poupart.

Our team celebrated with the community this past week a successful Grand Opening of the new Workforce Training and Business Development Center.

Speakers from our team, along with Tribal President Johnson and EDA Representative Tom Baron, shared additional insight on the opportunities and partnerships that come with developing the new Training Center.

The idea of creating a workforce training and business development unit started in 2018. Our team hopes to create new opportunities for those within and around the community with the new Training Center.

The facility was completed in February this year, 2022. The pandemic created delays, but our commitment to the Center never wavered. Given the changes in the workforce landscape over the past couple of years, we are developing training curriculums that best serve the Northwoods today and that will help shape its future.
Treaty Rights Upheld By Federal Court Tax Decision
According to the Associated Press, the state of Wisconsin cannot impose property taxes on tribal lands that have changed hands without congressional approval.

"This is a victory for Treaty Rights and the protections our ancestors negotiated on behalf of future generations of Tribal Members," Tribal President John D. Johnson, Sr. says. "This is one of many examples of why we must continue to fight to preserve our rights. Treaty Rights are under constant and continuous attack, and it's super important we continue to push back against those who want to undo federally-guaranteed protections."

The decision from a three-judge panel from the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals marks another chapter in a lawsuit four Chippewa tribes from northern Wisconsin filed in 2018.

The Lac Courte Oreilles, the Lac du Flambeau, the Red Cliff and the Bad River sued after the state imposed property taxes on land within our reservations.

Such land is immune from state property taxes under an 1854 treaty, but the state argued that the land is eligible because tribal members sold it to non-American Indians before the land was were sold back to tribal members.

The three-judge panel affirmed that the land isn’t taxable without congressional approval, saying only Congress can diminish tribes’ sovereignty and the treaty is best read to promise tax immunity even for reacquired lands.

Library Board Encourages Community To Visit Library
I've been on this Board a few years now and enjoy this Tribal Council committee appointment. I love reading and promoting literacy. This all helps increase our knowledge!

Patty Beson is the new school representative on the Board and her first report on August 15th was exciting in terms of student ability to access books on-line. I hope we are modeling the importance of reading by reading to and with our young ones.

Please visit our library if you haven't been there in a while and see what's there. Large print books for those of use who need this, computers and even book search. Get yourself a library card and look at the wonderful painting donated to the library by Chris Meyer also a Board member. Mii-gwitch!
