Blue Springs boy raises more than $3,000 for BSPD
|

We have some pretty amazing kids here in Blue Springs and eight-year-old Brecken is no exception. Brecken decided to use his summer vacation to raise funds for the Blue Springs Police Department. He diligently saved his money and as of July 27, he had raised $31. Well on July 28, that all changed. He held a lemonade stand and with a little publicity from the media, he was able to present Blue Springs Police Chief Bob Muenz with a check for $3,494 at a special ceremony on Aug. 2. Good job, Brecken and thank you for your dedication to the community and to the Blue Springs Police Department.

Eight Annual EMMC Mayor's Hotshot Basketball Challenge
|
It was a terrific night at the Eight Annual Mayor's Hotshot Basketball Challenge on Aug. 2, in Grain Valley. I competed against
Mayor Mike Todd, Grain Valley; Mayor Leonard Jones, Grandview; Mayor Eileen Weir, Independence; Mayor Bill Baird, Lee's Summit; Mayor Jeremy Martin, Oak Grove; Mayor Mike McDonough, Raytown; and Mayor Mike Larson, Sugar Creek. I was able to win the Bronze Medal this year.
Congratulations to Blue Springs City Administrator Eric Johnson (bottom right) for winning the gold medal and out-shooting five area City Administrators in the
Eastern Metro Municipal Challenge City Administrators' Hotshot Basketball Challenge Aug. 2.

City Hall Renovation Progress

The renovations at City
Hall are coming along nicely. Inside city hall, the first floor is being finished out for fresh paint and new casework. In the lower level, in-wall rough-in of electrical, plumbing, and HVAC has continued, along with the cutting of new windows openings.
Outside, the split level parking lot is taking shape with the installation of modular block retaining walls. The elevator shaft has successfully been topped out and the new slab for the addition has been poured in preparation for the erection of steel at the beginning of August.

Hello, Blue Springs! Can you believe it is already August and time for back-to-school? I can't, but I did have the privilege of welcoming the new Blue Springs School District employees on Aug. 10. It's going to be a great school year!
This summer has flown by. But you know what they say, "time flies when you are having fun!" And it sure has been a fun couple of months here in Blue Springs.
In this issue we are highlighting some citizens that have gone above and beyond. Dena Duhon, a longtime resident and community volunteer was recently recognized by the Missouri Municipal League with the 2018 Civic Leadership Award. Also, 8-year-old Brecken won hearts all over the City as he raised money for the Blue Springs Police Department with his lemonade stand. He and Sgt. Jeff Sargent even appeared live on Fox & Friends, national a show on the Fox News Network.
In July, we celebrated the opening of another new playground from the 1/2-cent Parks Maintenance Sales Tax and now you'll have the opportunity to choose the design of our next playground improvement at Burrus Old Mill Park. Spoiler alert: This one includes a much-requested splash pad!

Dena Duhon Recognized with Missouri Municipal League 2018 Civic Leadership Award

I am proud to announce Dena Duhon has a recipient of the Missouri Municipal League 2018 Civic Leadership Award.
For the last 20 years, Dena has been involved in at least 10 different community organizations. As a business leader in Blue Springs, she is an active member of the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce, having served on the Board of Directors - including a term as Chairman of the Board and as chair of the Fall Fun Festival Committee. And Dena's involvement does not stop with the business community.
As a member of the Park Commission, Dena's hard work was instrumental to the success and passage of the 5-year dedicated Parks Sales Tax in April 2017. Additionally, Dena worked tirelessly as an advocate of the April 2018 Use Tax initiative campaign.
She's also served as a stakeholder on the Renew the Blue Visioning Committee, the Blue Springs Economic Development Corporation, as a member of the Blue Springs Historical Society, the St. Mary's Auxiliary and as a member of the former Stand-Up Blue Springs.
Dena Duhon is a true citizen leader. When she sees a need for a program or initiative, she's not afraid to jump in and work the long unpaid hours of a volunteer to get the job done. Blue Springs is lucky to have someone as dedicated and involved as Dena.

Ward Park Playground Grand Opening

I am pleased to announce that the new playground at Ward Park is officially open.
This new playground will be a destination for families throughout the community. As we make good on the promises we made with regards to the Park Sales Tax, we continue to improve the quality of life for all Blue Springs residents. And most importantly, we enable families to make memories at our beautiful parks.
The city funded Ward Park's $331,995 playground through money from the ½-cent Parks Sales Tax that voters approved in 2017.
Other Parks Sales Tax projects slated for completion this summer are the tennis courts at Blue Springs Park and Pink Hill Park, Woods Chapel Park Trail, Duncan Road Trail and Baumgardner Park Trail.

City officials visit Faurecia site with Company President
|
Mayor Pro Tem Susan Culpepper, City Administrator Eric Johnson and I had the pleasure to meet with Faurecia
Interiors President Jean-Michel Renaudie on Aug. 2 at the Blue Springs site. The soon-to-be state-of-the-art production facility is coming along and will be bringing approximately 300 new jobs to the City in 2019. Look for information on the Faurecia job fair to be announced soon.
