A bi-weekly message from your Blue Springs Mayor and City Council
Hello and welcome to News Happenings Around Town, your one-stop source for City information and news updates, including those items most important to you.

There are plenty of things to do and good causes to support here in Blue Springs!

This weekend you can come out to our Music in the Park Concert series, a FREE event that features a different band every Sunday night from 6-8 p.m. at Rotary Park.  To see the complete 2015 concert lineup, click here.

You can also support causes like the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital by purchasing a ticket to the Blue Springs Dream Home or you can help someone in need by donating at our upcoming blood drive. Read below for more information on both.

As always, please continue sharing this timely publication and spreading the word about the good things in the City of Blue Springs.

St. Jude Dream Home Tickets

Tickets for the St. Jude Dream home are now available for purchase!  I had the honor of purchasing the first raffle ticket last week, during KFKF-94.1 morning show with radio personality and Blue Springs councilman Dale Carter. To purchase a ticket, please click here or call 800-385-9756. Tickets will be on sale until October 14; the raffle date is set for October 15.

This home is being built by Summit Custom Homes and boasts of more than 4,000-square-feet of space. It is modeled after the Templeton plan and is a two story home with five bedrooms and five bathrooms. It also boasts of an optional sixth bedroom on the main floor. The Dream Home Giveaway is an annual raffle-based fundraiser for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

This is the second year St. Jude has built their Dream Home in Blue Springs and I am pleased that they have chosen our community for this wonderful home!

City Receives Above and Beyond Award

I am honored to share that the City of Blue Springs recently received the Above and Beyond Award presented by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) at their annual awards dinner on June 5.

This award was given to the city as a way of recognizing the extraordinary support we have shown to our employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve by creating supportive work environments. As a former member of the United States Army it is great to see that we are doing all that we can to support our service members.

A special thank you to Police Chief Wayne McCoy who attended the ceremony and accepted the award on behalf of the city.

Mid-America Regional Council Regional Leadership Awards Ceremony
I was honored to be a featured speaker for the Mid-America Regional Council's 19th Annual Regional Assembly on Friday, June 5, 2015.

The program, "Where Are We Heading?" included plans and strategies that serve as our regional roadmap in five key areas: vibrant and connected places, a healthy environment, effective government, the economy, and creating communities of opportunity.

This year's Regional Leadership Award recipients were:
  • Kirk Davis, long-time city manager for Gladstone, Missouri.
  • Ellen Hanson, recently retired police chief for Lenexa and Kansas City, Kansas.
  • Jewish Family Services, which provides an extensive network of services to people in need, serving all faiths and both sides of the state line.
  • Brian Nowotny, director of Platte County Parks and Recreation.
  • Gene Wilson, civic volunteer and former senior vice president with the Kauffman Foundation.

Community Blood Drive

All donors receive two FREE tickets to an August 2015 Kansas City Royals game!

There is no substitute for blood. It has to come from one person in order to give to another. A critical number of voluntary donations are required every day to meet the need for blood in the Blue Springs area. The blood you donate could help save a life of someone in our community.

I urge you to give and make a difference in someone's life! Click here to sign up.
