An Interview with Rich Lichtenstein
Civil rights through public health.  That's the overarching philosophy and life's work of retired Public Health Professor Richard Lichtenstein, one of the founding members of the Detroit URC. In this interview, Rich talks about how he became involved in public health and community-based participatory research (CBPR), and he offers some words of wisdom for those carrying the work forward. New CBPR Partnership Academy Cohort!
Twelve community-academic teams from across the country just completed a one-week intensive course in CBPR as part of their participation in our CBPR Partnership Academy, which also includes year-long training and mentoring in this collaborative research approach. Participants hail from nine states: California, Connecticut, Georgia, Michigan, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Texas, and Washington. Read more. 
 
The Detroit URC and several affiliated partnerships will be sharing their CBPR success stories, study results, and "lessons learned" at the annual meeting of the American Public Health Association (APHA) in Atlanta, Georgia, November 2-8, 2017. Several teams involved in URC's CBPR Partnership Academy have also been accepted to present.

Community Action to Promote Healthy Environments (CAPHE) recently launched a Public Health Action Plan with specific recommendations for improving air quality in Detroit. As part of CAPHE's program, three community-academic research teams were selected to receive small planning grants to help bring some of those recommendations to fruition in Detroit neighborhoods. The organizations and project titles include: 1) The Ecology Center, "Breath Free Detroit," 2) Green Door Initiative, "Detroit Asthma Team," and 3) Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision, "Reducing Deadly Emissions in Detroit." Four community-academic research teams gathered at the Detroit Center on June 21, 2017 to share and discuss progress they've made to date in their collaborative, grant-funded research projects related to preventing and alleviating poverty in Michigan. This marks the first round of funded projects through a grant program co-sponsored by U-M Poverty Solutions and the Detroit URC.   Read more.
