Congratulations to three University of Michigan researchers and community partner organizations who were selected to receive funding for collaborative research projects focused on evaluating and strengthening interventions, programs, and policies that seek to prevent and alleviate poverty in Michigan.This marks the first round of community-academic grants awarded through a new joint funding program between the Detroit URC and U-M Poverty Solutions. CBPR Partnership Academy Recruiting Now!
The Detroit URC is accepting applications for our third annual 
Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) Partnership Academy. This one-year, all-expenses-paid program provides selected community-academic teams a unique opportunity to learn about CBPR through an integrated learning program that includes a one-week intensive course in Ann Arbor, monthly learning activities, and expert mentoring as they develop a CBPR partnership and project in their community. The application deadline is February 10.  Read more.

Our Latest Small Planning Grant Recipients
Congratulations to the Community Health and Social Services (CHASS) Center, Inc. and Dr. Ann-Marie Rosland on receiving a small planning grant to move forward with a collaborative program to improve the health of low-income Latino and African American patients at CHASS by engaging family supporters to work with patients to support and improve chronic disease management. The small planning grant program is offered by the Detroit URC in partnership with the Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR). Read more.

Many thanks to everyone who made it the Detroit URC's Annual Holiday Party at Sindbad's Restaurant in Detroit last month despite the snowy conditions. It was truly a festive evening of tasty food, fun dancing, wonderful raffle prizes, and, as usual, enjoyable company among friends.

We are happy to announce the availability of a new Detroit URC Educational Opportunities catalog, which outlines a wide range of workshops, presentations, and mentoring opportunities that are available jointly by our partnership's academic researchers and community partners. 

 
Mark your calendar for Monday,  February 13 at 3 p.m. for a presentation by Detroit URC board member Abdul El-Sayed, Executive Director and Health Officer for the Detroit Health Department. Dr. El-Sayed's talk, titled " People, Place, & Public Health: Reflections from Detroit," will be held at U-M's North Campus Research Complex (Building 10) as part of the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation's Research Seminar Series. MDHHS Minority Health Grant Opportunity
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services'
Health Disparities Reduction and Minority Health Program has released a Request for Proposals for one-time project funds of $10,000 to applicants interested in developing collaborative projects designed to achieve health equity for Michigan's racial and ethnic populations. A pplications are due by  Feb. 1, 2017 .   Learn more.
 
Julia at Detroit URC
After a decade of dedication to the Detroit URC (starting as a U-M School of Public Health student intern), our former Center Manager Julia Weinert is now working as Assistant Director of U-M Poverty Solutions,  a new initiative focused on informing, identifying, and testing new strategies for the prevention and alleviation of poverty in Michigan, the nation, and the world. 

Please join us in congratulating Julia on this wonderful advancement to her career and in thanking her for 10 years of contributions to the Detroit URC! We look forward to continuing to work together in her new position.
