Happy Retirement Rich Lichtenstein!
Dr. Richard Lichtenstein has officially retired from the University of Michigan School of Public Health after serving at U-M for 44 years and directing the Summer Enrichment Program in Health Management and Policy (U-M SEP) since its inception in 1986. The U-M SEP is an enormously successful internship program that attracts and educates future leaders from across the country who are interested in eliminating racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic health inequalities. More than 300 people gathered at the Renaissance Center in Detroit on May 5 to honor Dr. Lichtenstein and the U-M SEP.
Rich has also been the Co-Director of the Detroit URC since it began in 1995 and has played a key role on the Board and on several of the affiliated partnerships. We greatly appreciate Rich's many contributions to our work in Detroit and look forward to continued collaborations.

 CBPR Partnership Academy Second Cohort
The Detroit URC has selected 12 community-academic teams from across the U.S. to participate in the
CBPR Partnership Academy. Now in its second year, this year-long program is designed to enhance participants' knowledge and skills in community-based participatory research, so they may apply this collaborative research approach to address racial and ethnic inequities in health in their communities.
Funded by the National Institutes of Health, the CBPR Partnership Academy includes a week-long intensive course, taught by both University of Michigan academic researchers and Detroit community partners in Ann Arbor in July; one year of structured learning opportunities; and access to ongoing networking and mentorship. Throughout the year, the newly formed partnerships will work together to develop and implement a joint CBPR research project focused on improving the health and well-being of the communities involved.
Those selected, through an extensive, competitive review process, hail from eight states:
California,
Georgia, Hawaii, Minnesota, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Washington, and
Wisconsin and are addressing a wide range of health equity and quality-of-life issues involving diverse populations.

Pleasant & Productive Networking Social
Hats off to everyone who participated in the
Detroit URC's Fourth Annual Networking Social at Sindbads in Detroit on Thursday, May 19, 2016. With more than 60 people, representing a wide range of Detroit-based community organizations, health agencies, and academic disciplines, the gathering gave participants a valuable opportunity to discuss how they could potentially work together to help improve health equity in Detroit.

Congratulations to Small Grant Recipients
The Detroit URC, in partnership with the Michigan Institute for Clinical Research (MICHR), is awarding two community-academic teams with Small Planning grants to support their collaborative research projects, one of which is focused on boosting climate resiliency in Detroit and another to establish a Hypertension Community Advisory Board to inform hypertension research in the Detroit area.
