The City of Edmonton’s Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP) is launching permanently on October 17 to empower property owners to make energy-efficient and renewable energy upgrades.
The program is an important part of Edmonton’s commitment to a renewable energy transition and reducing the city’s greenhouse gas emissions. It is offered in partnership with Alberta Municipalities, the program administrator for municipal Clean Energy Improvement Programs across the province.
"Edmontonians are deeply committed to building a sustainable future, and the Clean Energy Improvement Program is a key part of our efforts to transition to emission-neutral buildings and enhance the quality of life in our city," said Mayor Amarjeet Sohi. "By making energy-efficient and renewable energy upgrades more accessible, we are taking meaningful steps towards our goal of becoming a climate-resilient city."
The CEIP allows residential and commercial property owners to access long-term, competitive financing for retrofits such as installing solar photovoltaic systems, upgrading insulation or improving heating and cooling systems. The financed amount is then repaid through the owners’ property taxes, making it accessible and manageable for a wide range of residents.
An initial allocation of $20 million in financing will be recovered over time through property tax payments from program participants. The financed amount will be collected from tax rolls without impacting the City’s debt or tax levy to other taxpayers. In May, City Council approved the bylaw to formally create the permanent program which followed the successful pilot program in 2022.
The program application portal opens to Edmonton property owners on MyCEIP.ca on October 17 and will be administered by Alberta Municipalities. Alberta Municipalities is a not-for-profit association founded in 1905. It represents Alberta’s 265 urban municipalities including cities, towns, villages, summer villages, and specialized municipalities.
“The partnership between the City of Edmonton and Alberta Municipalities on the Clean Energy Improvement Program demonstrates the importance of collaboration in addressing climate change,” said ABmunis Director Trina Jones. “This initiative is another example of how municipalities across Alberta are supporting property owners who want to make energy efficiency and renewable energy upgrades."
The CEIP helps reduce Edmonton’s greenhouse gas emissions and helps property owners save on building energy costs, contributing to a more sustainable and economically resilient Edmonton.
The permanent launch of the CEIP is a significant step forward in Edmonton’s Community Energy Transition and aligns with the city’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
